    Our Voice

    Dear Sirs,

    1. All countries in the region of Horn of Africa, do not give nationality based on mothers nationality. It’s a well known fact, the it’s given only based on father’s nationality. Do you want Eritrea to be an exception to these laws throughout the region ?, I don’t think it will work.

    2. and 3. Any one born in Eritrea, can get nationality based on naturalization laws, if and when the concerned person asks for it, but now we don’t have these laws.
    For now, forget it.

    4. Foreign wives !!, is not an urgent issue. There is no need to raise this issue now.

    5. People who served Eritrea !!, what kind of service ?. It’s a good idea, but how many such people are there now ?. Do they really need Eritrean nationality, Do their countries of origin allow dual nationality ?. Are they going to be residents ? …etc.
Again, it’s not an urgent issue now.

I don’t think there is a need to raise nationality issues now. Any one who feels he/she is Eritrean and will be involved in elections. Accommodating such people is not going to be a problem.

Our Voice, you are irritating a lot of us,are you trying to test our political knowledge or demonstrate how proficient you are in presenting empirical theoretical solutions or even to take it a little further like Natnael said, are you another decoy of the tyrant playing with innocent mind and prolonging his reign. In this highly charged skeptical and suspicious political atmosphere, your approach is adding fuel to the already divided opposition landscape, and you should know better as ‘intellectuals’.And this post is written by veteran Tegadalay who never attended higher educational institution. The Eritrean audience is evolving, you have to keep up with the times.

I understand why Our Voice have raised the topic of “Who is an Eritrean?” This is a question that could be raised in any country? Who is an American? Who is a German? Etc. I am sure there is a generally accepted criteria that might differ from country to country. Our Voice have listed several criteria that may or may not be exhaustive. But let’s not dwell too much on this topic. All our Voice and others are advocating is the need for Eritreans to get organized in their respective localities. In my view, when an all-inclusive general meeting of Eritreans is called, there should not be any obstacle for anyone who believes he or she is Eritrean and who wants to contribute to the downfall of the dictatorial regime. I understand some may have concerns that such an open door policy might give access to “Trojan horse” whose motive is to create disruption. The solution for this is to be vigilant of such disruptive elements and take the necessary action to combat their ill motives.

Dear professor Araya, your mentorship is well appreciated. However, I have a different take on the issue of citizenship at this critical juncture. Our voice has heard an earful when it raised it in the past. It puzzles me to see it back on the very same forum. I agree with the other commenteters that this is not a burning issue, it only sidetracks the major issue our voice is working hard at. I don’t know if there is or are individuals that our voice is trying to please. What percentage of Our population has no roots in the villages? Why can’t they be patient till we save our people and country that we are on the verge of loosing it entirely? Who gave our voice or anyone else for that matter, the mandate to discuss constitutional issue without the approval of Our people back home?
    Yours truly, Kidane
