Resistance in exile: Eritrean freedom fighter Mesfin Hagos

Eritrea is one of the most authoritarian regimes in Africa. Mesfin Hagos was once the country’s defense minister. Now he fights those in power from his new home – as a refugee in Germany.

The flow of refugees from Africa to countries within the European Union does not appear to be slowing – even after the disaster which occurred near the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa at the beginning of October. Many of the 300 people who drowned were from Eritrea. Human rights organizations describe the East African country as “Africa’s largest prison.” For close to 20 years, authoritarian president Isaias Afewerki has ruled the country. Anyone who unsuccessfully tries to flee the country can expect to be thrown into prison.

    Zeresenay,
You spoke my mind and the mind of majority people.we have to stop being a debating society. I have said it many times we have to respond fire with fire until we prevail and lead our lost young girls and boys back to safety of their mothers and fathers. Some people pretending to be against isias say we do not want civil war. I said time and time that it has been so far a one sided war against us while Eseyas completely disabled our young children, women and men and wiped our entire people while selling our resources to foreiners and declaing the empty eritrea will be filled with Asians.Lets all contribute either physically or monetary to build a formidable army , enteligence gathering and military planning. Beleive me it is the only solution and it will only take weeks to dismantle the terror and to hang Eseyas and his generals just like what the Romanians did to their dictator Nikolai Tishansisco and his wife were hanged in public.Once we started the first fire those who are with us from EDF will abundon their post and join us those who are against us they will fight to protect their criminal boss. The problem is there is no young people left in eritrea or in refugee camps so all people in diaspora has to do the job.The sooner the better.I am more concerned about our girls and women because they have suffered more than any one under this dictator because he did it on purpose to humilate and dehumanise them where ever they go.
