Ethiopian official blames indiscipline for air traffic disruption, flights resume

Flights have resumed at Ethiopia’s Bole International Airport after what was described as a rare but also brief industrial action that led to the grounding of flights on Tuesday morning.

State TV confirmed that the refusal of air traffic controllers to take up post had led to the situation. Airport operation manager, Nigussie Mulugeta is quoted as saying dozen flights could not depart because they had not been issued with air traffic clearance.

On his part, however, Director of the Ethiopia Civil Aviation Authority, the body in charge of air traffic control blamed the strike on some indisciplined staff and fake news.

“Few undisciplined air traffic controllers who were misled by a journalist who came and interviewed them and took false information,” Colonel Woseneyeleh Hunehna said.

He said the unnamed journalist had come to peddle unfounded corruption allegations against the authority causing disaffection among the workers and subsequently the strike action.

Even though the exact cause of the protest is not known, flights have since resumed and local media portals continue to seek an explanation from the workers.

Ethiopia, East Africa’s economic giant and one of Africa’s most expansive economies for this year, has maintained tight controls over its economy for decades.

One of the major headaches of that situation is a foreign currency squeeze that has gravely affected importers of goods into the country. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has promised a crackdown on corruption at a Monday evening meeting with members of the private sector.

Addressing the forex squeeze, he specifically noted that it was going to take years for the situation to be normalized and charged the private sector and Ethiopians in the diaspora to play a role in that recovery process.

amanuel, You may also wish to be impressed by one past historical fact. Would you believe that the FIRST indigenous General Manager of EAL, who took over from American Management (TWA), was an ERITREAN/OROMO off-spring? His brother too was a brilliant pilot in the same Airline. Eritreans played a significant glaring role in the ENTIRE breadth and height of Ethiopian Air Line Organization – one of the most successful airline in the World. EAL had/has brilliant record of mixture of ethnicity in its entire hierarchy. In your spare time, you may wish to browse the fantastic GOOGLE., or EAL’s website itself. .
      Have a pleasant week-end.

I believe ethiopia has a great chance to eastablish democracy due to peoples resistance and abhorence to one ethnic and one party monopoly and dominsnce of power.

Tplf and eplf are born pretenders, liars and thugish in nature. Amel mis megnez kemzibahal they will never change till they die. Are they borrowing fake news from fake president of usa. The irony is the news was true and genuine. The tigray regime sent a circular ordering 2 employees to do the job of 3 controllers to make the industry more profitable. It was not discussed with employees in advance. It leaked to the employees and they protested. Etv video itself shows reporter asking if it could have been avoided by discussing the new order with employees in advance.

Blaming unknown journalist of fake news for genuine protest, blaming diaspora ethiopians for welkaiyt tsegedes problem which was caused by tplf land grab to eastablish abay tigray, eritreans for badme dispute even after it was told by the world it was stolen land and should be returned to eritreans will lead to anihilation of tigray itself.
