Fetsum: Facing the universe empty handed II: Sympathy vs. Solution
As you know, the Eritreans in Diaspora and inside the country lately scored stronger sympathy from the universe than any other time in the fight. They invaded the streets of the world in support of the UN human rights commission’s conclusion on the situation of our people under the dictatorship. What we saw our people doing in Geneva, Israel and Ethiopia during the UN session on Eritrea was the direct result of the regime’s negligence and insensitivity on the suffocating condition of our society. This was the result of the dictator taking our people for granted and abusing them as if there was no tomorrow. At the time the Diaspora successfully showed its reaction in unprecedented fashion our voiceless people at home expressed their solidarity with deafening silence minus any sign of support to the government. The vicious regime that lived destroying and undermining the Eritreans mistaking their patience for unconditional obedience and yet testing them time and again by further humiliation and destruction without any provocation has finally woke up witnessing its serious miscalculation through the out of control explosion of the Eritrean people against its dictatorship. Clearly understanding the extent of self-inflicted damage, the desperate dictator is today behaving like a mad dog running around without a destination. A self-destructive person in this situation should not be expected to take sane actions for everything has broken apart and every opportunity exhausted.
Afwerki can no longer sleep peacefully with all these things going on and his flame closing in to burn him alive. The mind at this stage in development should be paranoid, scared, restless and desperately looking for anything to survive a day at a time. He had to do something to divert our attention no matter how crazy. The question is what may it be? What is there for him to try for deception that he did not try in the past? This is like an adamant person reaching the cliff of a valley and cannot retreat for safety for there is no more comfort zone around. He must either retreat knowing the result would be death or committing suicide falling to the bottom of the valley. Either way, the end result would be death. Taking the maximum risk at the expense of anything is worth trying in his condition for he has nothing to lose any more after losing everything: love, dignity, spiritual integrity, trust and legacy for the sake of arrogance, brutality, ego, corruption, grudge and injustice that he can no longer safely enjoy. The life of this president has slipped away in favor of depressing mortality as cumulative cost of his SIN. With every deceptive mechanism tested and overdone, he appears left with the only remedy his intelligence assumes helping his resurrection: war with Ethiopia. This is why he allowed the useless Ethiopian forces in Eritrea to cross the border and fight the Ethiopians hoping the two societies to one more destroy each other for his illusive survival even at the cost of his demise.
With all these goodies going on in favor of change in Eritrea, appreciation goes to the remarkable achievement of the intellectuals in “Eritreans for Democratic Change” for fueling this outstanding chronicle while resentment comes from them towards the entire Eritrean society for failing to complete the mission because of facing the situation empty handed without the most critical catalyst called STRATEGY.
Our brothers and sisters in the mission managed to help the universe take a concrete position against the regime. They confidently answered everything that was asked by the international community about the regime and the condition of our people under, yet they stuttered or failed to answer “What is the next step? Are you going to have an interim government to democracy after this successful mobilization event?” They had nothing to offer except eye contact and humility to these burning questions of the moment and left the scene without arranging future projects with the associated international politicians on the merit.
“Help us change the government” does not cut it unless you show what type of change in writing and in fact would work against us in retrospect. No crazy international politician would be interested changing a dictatorship with more chaotic another for they would be better off with the existing dictatorship that at least shuts off dangerous extremists and keeps the border intact (Syria, etc.). “Believe us that we would bring democracy in Eritrea” does not work unless you build their trust through material strategy. First because they cannot trust you without a strategy and they cannot believe that you understand what you are talking about without any written description since that is the only way proving it? This logic is similar to trying to buy a house without the proper documentation only based on verbal conviction and TRUST.
Appropriate answer to the questions happened to be the mandatory connecting bridge between the two members of that specific duality (our people and the UN) that are currently looking at each other from the opposite sides of the river. Unfortunately, nothing to this effect! As a result our compatriots that represented us in the Geneva activities went back to the localized and isolated resistance as usual leaving the international community wondering about how they lost this golden opportunity to take the struggle to the next level. Furthermore, no external power can be motivated to change our situation unless they lose confidence on our capacity to do it ourselves. The Ethiopian government’s recent contemplation to do this is a direct derivative of our failure to dignify the Eritrean resistance through the STRATEGY.
In procrastinating this extremely crucial element and focusing on vision-lessly confronting the regime, the Eritrean resistance has caused two outstanding damages to itself and to our people: closing the doors to international community and exposing the society to fall under the mercy of foreigners, most probably the Ethiopians. We are a document away from enjoying effective assistance from the international community and avoiding the risk of Ethiopians meddling in our affairs which will cost us dearly should this take place in the future. There is no complete foreign remedy without suffering its dominance for the cost of external solution is unwanted compromises on our sovereignty and dignity at least psychologically and materially if not territorially.
In conclusion, Democracy sounds very interesting but everyone including the dictators has said it enough for the international community to take your words without written documentation. In this situation the world simply cannot help the Eritreans because they say they will install democracy in the country. In fact I believe never mentioning it would serve the confused resistance in its current condition better than saying it for nothing can prove to the international community how undemocratic it was advocating it without merit, written material (strategy). No one will take you seriously for just saying it without suggesting a strategy in writing fellow Eritreans no matter how mobilized you are for they know that the mouth can say anything. Therefore do not expect any forward movement till you understand this procedure and practically produce the strategy that reduces the Eritrean society to secular democracy. Don’t be blindly optimistic and easily excitable about the development till you understand that this part of the process is no body’s business except yours and you take it seriously before your country becomes a prey of external abuse.
What we have so far proved to the international community is that we were tired of the dictatorship and that we want to change it without offering a better alternative. What the international community will do in retrospect is helplessly watching us suffer with sympathy. Therefore, make no mistake that you have earned sympathy from the planet now but no solution in the relationship. To this effect I one more time warn you to use the ANSWER (modeled after the Liberian Democratic experience) as your preliminary STRATEGY for humankind knows that you don’t have anything else at hand and you are running out of steam to impact your society democratically. Congratulations for achieving the ultimate sympathy of the world but I offer my condolence to you for missing the opportunity of neutralizing the dictator through the ANSWER in the absence of any other solution.
