The gorgeous, charismatic and decisive, but arrogant and aggressive leader, lives in controversial history and political life. He puts the promising and flourishing nation into permanent devastation eliminating the liberty, justice and freedom of all class citizens for more than a decade. This is the President of the state of Eritrea Issias Afweorki (PIA) who has spent more than seventy percent of his life in struggle either for justice or autocracy. No one successfully wins to write his biography. Therefore, the image of the president still remains as “national hero” in the eyes of government supporters; and the most “atrocious” leader on the side of the opponents. But, history needs credible source to define and describe the president in objective and precise way.

President Issias Afeworki has faced serious challenges in national politics, foreign diplomacy, justice system, economic policy, and militarism for the last twenty years. The condition of his government is being more worsened by excessive migration, UN sanctions, heavy inflations, clash among top government officials and army commanders, and growing protest of Eritrean youths in diaspora. The government attempts to justify the sky rocketed crisis in Eritrea because of “Ethiopian invasion” and foreign “conspiracy” materialized against the existence of Eritrea as sovereign, unified and independent state, and jealous about “growing economic prosperity” for the last seven years since independence. The government argues that the Eritrean case still remain as unfinished business justifying by mentioning the formulation of ethnic based divisive movements, tendency of union with Ethiopia, intent of some Islamic radicalism, and inclination of some regionalism, which partly stagnate the process of mobilization for democratic change.

The Best tools for PIA to finish the unfinished business is that doing: uncalculated and permanent tension and conflict with neighboring countries; practicing endless military service, restricting the right of movement, speaking and worshiping; tightly controlling the business transactions, media and national court; destroying the values and standard of education; refraining the involvement and contribution of citizens in the political affairs of their nation; and running the state with rules of jungle. The government utilizes the maximum mind, energy and time to secure and apply the above stated tools by intimidating, torturing, detaining and murdering. This disgraced political strategy is usually taken in the name of “national security” and “interest”. Most of the government supporters acknowledge PIA decision disregarding the horrible consequences that destroy the well being of the country and question the futurity of the new generation. They narrowly conceive him as “Maker” and “Savior” of Eritrea without feeling the pain of tortured, disbursed, raped, detained, kidnapped, sold and dying fellow citizens.

For the last ten years, most of the optimistic citizens are waiting PIA to declare at least a national constitution and release the political prisoners new-year in and new-year out, but he often busy to cook ideas more about regional and international issues which are usually irrelevant to the internal affairs of Eritrea. He never admits the failed system of his governance, and never acknowledged the national problems either. He ignores or pretend that the problem not in existence.  If there is to mention some, he runs to blame the outside world for conspiring his mission or program to build a prosperous Eritrea.

In fact PIA is a competent leader to confuse or manipulate the national issues, and often attempts to appear as “National Armor”. If not, he does not feel any shy to lie, to lie… in every moment he has done interaction with public. The national TV, called Eri-TV, serves PIA’s doctrine and propaganda though it echoes “serving the truth” in every broadcasting. The media has totally failed to serve the public interest disseminating the realistic situation on ground. Currently, the Information Minister Ali Abdu has defected, but he remained silent, and gloomy to participate in the process of national transformation that at least helps him to wash his hands.

According to empirical data that have been documented, PIA has been reluctant to establish a constitutional state suspending its implementation in 1997 engaging in boarder conflict with Ethiopia in 1998. In 2001 he ignored the demand of political transformation by detaining the reformists called G-15 and journalists. There is no clear report about life and whereabouts of the detained influential citizens. The president has presented the case of the reformist as “national treason” without trial and bail. The media became an integrated tool to politicize the ordinary people; and mostly convinced the public to condemn the initiatives of political changes. The president suspended the implementation of national constitution for more than ten years suppressing any form of dissenting, and personalizing the whole institutions.

Almost after 12 years of not much political momentum inside the country, on January 21, 2013 some army dissidents controlled the Ministry of Information located in Forto demanding the implementation of national constitution and release of political prisoners. Yet the president was not ready for change, and reacted by mass arrest. The president is moving from one form of crime to another since the inception of independence. Day in and day out PIA becomes more hostile and aggressive battling to strengthen autocracy to create a save island where there is no indictment of injustice until he leaves the earth. I do not believe that PIA would work to prevail the rule of law over the rule of jungle, because he could not instill justice to which he will be the first client for crime he is committing against thousands of innocent citizens. Forever and ever he lives in autocracy running away from justice unless there is internal political tectonic.

    Dear Reader I appreciate//

I agree on the article that the state of Eritrea tries to distort Eritrean just repeatedly agitating in the daily propaganda that ‘”The government attempts to justify the sky rocketed crisis in Eritrea because of “Ethiopian invasion” and foreign “conspiracy” materialized against the existence of Eritrea as sovereign, unified and independent state, and jealous about “growing economic prosperity” for the last seven years since independence.” this is the worst point smuggling word printed on the majority of Eritrean.

Very good article describing the actual status of Eritrea PIA in its helm. The short answer is to get ride of PIA at any cost

      Dear Weygud,
I sense your comment, but people, who go to market, could not have the same demand. It differs on the financial capability, priorities and interest what they need to buy. It is really hard to determine what people need to buy. Sorry, I have failed to prepare you a good quality of goods that you demand that accounts your high financial capability, and your desire to buy high quality of goods.

The article I produced could not be new for those who have deep knowledge about the situation in Eritrea, but it raises a lot of potential questions that our intellectuals fail to answer with more precise and verified information. Thus, the most important message of the article is that to promote a sense of discussion among interested citizens to give their opinion on certain controversial issues that put our people in dilemma:

      1. No matter his atrocities, PIA’s government has relatively better public support comparing to opposition blocks. What do you think the reason?

“Because he is a gorgeous, charismatic, decisive, or because of his contribution in struggle or his tactics to impact people or the failure of the opposition to win much public support”

      2. Why do academicians fail to write the biography of PIA to have well defined image, personality and character about him though he is not willing to share?
“No one successfully wins to write his biography. Therefore, the image of the president still remains as “national hero” in the eyes of government supporters; and the most “atrocious” leader on the side of the opponents. But, history needs credible source to define and describe the president in objective and precise way.”

      3. How do you assess the nature, composition and contribution of the opposition group to remove PIA and to involve in process of democratization?
“The government argues that the Eritrean case still remain as unfinished business justifying by mentioning the formulation of ethnic based divisive movements, tendency of union with Ethiopia, intent of some Islamic radicalism, and inclination of some regionalism, which partly stagnate the process of mobilization for democratic change.”

      4. Do you think that the reluctance of Ethiopia to implement the final and binding boarder decision contributes to high militarization and stagnated democratization process in Eritrea?
“The government attempts to justify the sky rocketed crisis in Eritrea because of “Ethiopian invasion” and foreign “conspiracy” materialized against the existence of Eritrea as sovereign, unified and independent state, and jealous about “growing economic prosperity” for the last seven years since independence.”

5.The most important scope of the article: is PIA now ready for political transformation because of either intrinsic motivation or external pressure accounting the situation in Eritrea?
“Almost after 12 years of not much political momentum inside the country, on January 21, 2013 some army dissidents controlled the Ministry of Information located in Forto demanding the implementation of national constitution and release of political prisoners. Forever and ever he lives in autocracy running away from justice unless there is internal political tectonic.”

Brother/Sister, I hope you can sense the scope of the article; and I am waiting you to bring your personal prediction or analysis or opinion that could help enlighten our citizens. At least something is better than nothing.

      Thank you for your comment!!

Good article. I think the list of questions above made the article much better. You questions can maybe be called the Adhanom Challenge. What is missing with the opposition is collaborative and organized spirit Eritrean had during pre-independence days. I am not a big fan of the vandalizing happening in diaspora to government places but these are people who had enough and can’t find any other way to express their protest.
Another point is we focus a lot on Issias… but like all dictators he has die-hard supporters whose position, power, and prestige depends on issias staying in power. Those people need to be exposed also..
