eritreaDuring the last months Eritrea has been more frequently mentioned as a supporter of terrorism and a country that does not abide international law or human rights. Through these accusations and Eritrea’s inability to deny them the country has been marginalized and has been pushed into a group of rogue states that we know as the Axis of Evil. The most important fact that put Eritrea in this place is its support for Somali insurgent groups and its close relations with Iran, an already established member of the Axis of Evil.

AustraliaOn 23 December 2009 the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted resolution 1907, imposing sanctions against Eritrea in response to the ongoing border dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea, as well as Eritrea’s support to armed groups destabilising and undermining peace and reconciliation in Somalia, which the UNSC determined constituted a threat to international peace and security.

Milkias on UNSC sanctionAl-Jazeera’s Jane Dutton on Friday confronted Eritrea’s besieged President Isayas Afwerki with questions which every journalist would love to put to a dictator. Isayas tried in vain to show that he was in control although his poor, hostile performance merely reinforced the notion that the UN sanctions are already having the desired effect.

Have Your Say The U.N. Security Council has imposed sanctions on Eritrea in December 2009 “for its role in aiding rebels (thought to be affiliated with international terrorist groups)  in Somalia and refusing to withdraw from a ‘disputed border’ with Djibouti.” Months before the approval of the sanctions, there have been various, much publicized warnings by the international body, albeit ignored by the Eritrean Government.

State radio reported yesterday that the opposition is “covertly and overtly” collaborating with neighboring Eritrea ahead of elections on May 23. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a 1998-2000 border war that left as many as 70,000 people dead and the two countries’ armies remain deployed along their border.

A report out of Russia claims Eritrea is in violation of UN arms embargo on war-torn Sudan where over 200-thousand innocent Darfurians have lost their lives. In the meantime, last minute fundraising projects are underway in the West as such activities may soon be banned under new UN sanctions against Eritrean leaders.
