Meet Timnit Gebru, a person who The Selfpreneur has awarded the rare title of “Alicorn in Artificial Intelligence.” Read on to learn why she’s earned such a coveted title.

Let’s start with the backstory: Most stories of technology innovators start with them getting on a plane. But it’s somewhat rare for the plane to originate from Ethiopia, a country known as the birthplace of man in the horn of Africa. That’s exactly where Gebru’s story began. As a teenager, she left her native country to move to the United States and began embarking on a journey that would lead her to achieve a Bachelors, Master’s and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford. From there she earned a prestigious engineering job at Apple, then co-founded a startup. That should be enough right? Not for Gebru! She left Apple in the past, and now she is a Ph.D. Candidate at Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence Lab. But there’s more.

Gebru’s work was featured this year by The Economist. They highlighted her research to use machine learning and deep learning to predict census data using millions of images from google street view.

Well done Timnit! We are proud of you. YOU ARE an inspiration to the entire Africa and especially Ethiopia and Eritrea. Your ancestors of hadegti, tsenadegle and deki digna etc would be pleased to see one of their flash to achieve this high level award in academic research. This shows a hopeful future to the sick Eritrea. This shows if we left alone to do our business we have great sons and daughters that can achieve unthinkable. Great potential!
Wish you more success in you future Dr Timnit!

CongratulationsTimnit! Congratulations to your mom, Azeb too. Those of us who saw you at your pre-school days at Santa Anna in Addis Abeba are delighted and proud that you have earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford in the United States. What is more, the news that you been awarded the rare title of “Alicorn in Artificial Intelligence has raised our delight and pride has reached a level far beyond our imagination when we learned that your achievement and what you plan to achieve was declared to be of international significant that could herald changes for the better for the world in the future. The fact that the Economist and Forbes featured your work and your “action to address the problem and co-founded a social community called Black in AI which is a thriving community of data scientists, and AI engineers of African descent and/or who identify as black” is proof of these. It is regretful though, that some chose to use the opportunity to congratulate her as a playing field for bickering between them.
By the way, I want brother Isack to note that Timnit’s father Dr. Gebru W/Giorgis is from Afelba N/ Zoba Dekemhare and his mother is from Adebur N/ Zoba Segeneiti.
