Independence Day is marked to celebrate our nationhood. Independent Eritrea was born on 20th May, 1991. The birth of a nation is one of the compelling reasons to celebrate this day. Achieving Independence is an historic event, and it deserves its own day. Hence, Independence Day is a day on which a new nation Eritrea was born. Or, rather, it is a day in which a nation was recognized as existing in its own right. Thus we celebrate Independence Day every year as the most precious achievement of the nation marking the historic importance.

We Eritreans usually have different national holidays and events but of all these, Independence Day holds the most significance. So having a special day each year to commemorate independence ensures that we never forget about this momentous occasion in history and to remind our patriotic duties. I understand the occasional day you mostly commemorate every year to come is fought for by other people and thus Independence Day is marked to honor them. Therefore homage and tribute is paid to those freedom fighters lost their lives for securing independence for the country because of them and that’s why it is important to each and every Eritrean to celebrate it.

Independence Day is also chance to celebrate everything that is unique about our independent nation. This day celebrating to reflect on how far we have come as a nation and as a people too. Hence, here every good citizen has the right to prudently support or criticize, but cannot substitute it. Whatever way you/we choose to celebrate this Day, it is important to think about honesty, national spirit, and spirit of the general good. We should do our bit to preserve it; we should never pass by just like another normal day of protest.
    Long Live Eritrea

Celebrate your transition from slavery under the derg to slavery under hgdf. I believe majority would choose the first one. Did u dance all night on may 24? Did u dance b/s u made it safely to the usa or europe or b/s eritrea is now better than it was under mengistu?

Those who think they have a special affiliation to this day I.D. that is,keep harping about celebrating it spearheaded by their main mouthpiece Meskerem.net as if we don’t know its importance and our contribution to it.However, they conveniently forgot the very freedom the Eritrean masses fought for doesn’t exist anymore. Now ,they are trying to force feed us their empty rhetoric and defibrillate the souls they killed back to life and ‘party like it is 1999’. In other words, you can’t keep abusing your girlfriend all year and ask her out on Valentines Day and expect her party her heart out.It is time for people to act how they feel, stop telling them what to do,when are you going to learn hegdefites.
