Press Release

It is with profound sadness that we received the news of our dear brothers and sisters from the cost of Italy this week. We take this opportunity to extend our heart felt condolences to our beloved nation of Eritrea and its people.

Accordingly, we call upon the Eritrean community in the United States and Canada to hold a candle light vigil in memory of our sisters and brothers.

We believe these immense suffering that our youth continuously endures in search of a peaceful life, is the result of the oppression by the brutal regime in Eritrea – the PFDJ and its dysfunctional system.

We call upon all justice seeking people to join hands and work harder to eliminate the root cause of this endless problem.

Thank you and God Bless Eritrea!

It is a sad week for every Eritrean family. We lost each of us family and freinds. My prayer goes to the family. Lets not ignore this tragedy. Hope people will have to stand and fight for the cause not to ignore it. Please lets remember our sisters, brothers, daughters and sons with candle. Let’s pray one day will come peace to eritrea and the bloodshield will stop once evil gone for ever. Let’s hope the blind minded people will walkup and open their eyes to this tragedy. It is not smart to think things will get better unless things get better at home. No one want to leave home unless fire burn it. So let’s stop the fire so evey body will have peacefull home.

    Brother Said,
Its true our cursed poor nation is not short of black days and this black day is no worse than the others by any standard.Trust me in a nation where there is no short supply of fools, cowards and means together with the tight media control of the regime, plenty of untold gruesome crimes have been committed over the years. As if these all is not enough, the WORST and the MOST CATASTROPHIC is YET TO COME UNLESS WE DO SOMETHING TO STOP IT FROM HAPPENING.Then again,we can’t do that because we are A NATION of WHINERS and COWARDS.The mad dog is not going to stop doing his crimes because he knows we don’t have the gut to stop him from doing it.You see the vicious sad cycle we are in.
In my opinion, the day he ordered the execution of nearly 4000 Eritrean prisoners of war just like that six months after he took power should have been an indication of what to come. Some of these victims were accused of working with the “Derg” while others of being deserters (wedogeba)Remember,I am not saying that they were innocents but they shouldn’t have denied JUSTICE.The mad dog who was emboldened by our silence did not blink his eyes to massacre our disabled veterans in a broad day light in Mai Habar in 1994.The great Martin Luther King once said,we began to die the day we were silent about the issues that matter most. The coward nation that turned the other way including the old guard who are are made to suffer behind bars today began to die the day we were all silent when all the INJUSTICES were happening in front of our own eyes.
I rather fight the evil tooth and nail and save the next bunch of fools who are in the pipe line ready to die than wishing its victims to rest in peace or holding candle light vigil in their memories because it does no good to any of the victims.

Yes Fithawi, the mourning day started since May 1991 and it is continuing. Yes there is worst tragedy than picking from their homes in early nineteenth and making them to disappear for ever simply because one of the bandits decided that those people are not wanted in his playing field as if they are animals. The tragedy will continue if we Eritreans stand together to make an end for it.

May the Great Creator rest on peace the souls of perished our brothers and sisters.

Yesterday in Italy it was a national mourning day. The media was busy reporting from Lampedusa the latest updates on the tragedy. In Parliament, speakers from different political parties discussed about influx of migrants trying to reach Europe escaping from dictatorship and poverty.
It was a very emotional and sad day. In Rome people held candle vigil in the night. The Pope spoke about “shame” that people should feel assisting to this tragedy, [and not doing enough]. The ministry of Interior spoke about the courage and humanity shown by people of Lampedusa, while complaining that Europe is not doing enough to protect it’s frontiers. He said Italy will seek Nobel Prize for Lampedusa.
The boat with the remaining bodies is sunk at about 50 meters deep in the sea. The weather conditions was bad yesterday, the rescuers are expected to bring to shore about 200 bodies today. The 111 many of whom are Eritreans will be buried soon.

Is there any news from Eritrea ? …. well, I kept opening on TV-ER most of the day, till late in the evening. It briefly reported about African migrants dead while trying to cross to Italy, along side other African new such as elephants being killed in Zimbabwe by ivory smugglers.

You may speculate if you wish. The question is why this happens to eritreans and address the root cause.

        Said

        Dear brother,

The Italian government has been trying its best to discourage migrants from coming to Italy, using different methods. One of these is a law that penalizes Italian fishermen, if they help migrants reach Italian territories. Due to that many times, the fishermen look somewhere else even when they see people in distress. But when a major disaster finally occurs like this time, both government and fishermen rush to rescue people. They blame other European countries for not doing enough to help stop the influx. Accords reached with Gedafi did not help much, because the new government in Libya still does not have power over armed groups. So I think, behind the idea of Nobel Prize for Lampedusa, is an attempt by the government to test the sincerity of Northern Europeans countries, who also accommodate a huge number of refugee reaching their countries after passing through Italy. The message to them seems to be: “ok, many of them are applying for asylum in your countries, but it doesn’t mean we are not doing enough to stop them, we can do better only if you join efforts to do so down here, your borders start here in Lampedusa”.
The Italian government is very upset, because they feel Europe is not defending “its borders”, i.e. it shouldn’t be the responsibility of Italy alone to solve this problem. It was mentioned in the news that about 200 refugees sent by Italian government to Germany were sent back.
