That is too bad. I have been to that center in heydays of 90s. It was breathe of fresh air for us Eritrean raised in diaspora to go to place like that feel transported to Eritrea in terms of music, food, community.
It seems like Ms. Tekie and Mr. Selassie just don’t understand rules and regulation of Liquor license for events. I don’t understand why they don’t let a lawyer or an eritrean restaurant/bar owner prepare them for the event- they understand liquor license rules and safety much better. This is not specific to Eritrean cultural center. I have met or seen Eritrean bar/restaurant owners who learn the hard way when it comes to liquor license and american regulation. I think this symptom of our insular Eritrean culture then anything that has to do with PDJF.

THEY ADMITTED THAT THEY HAVE BEING DOING THIS, FOR THE PAST 15 TO 20 YEARS. I DON’T THINK THIS IS DUE TO LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. IT HAS PFDJ’S SCAM WRITTEN ALL OVER IT. THE WORST PART IS THEY ARE EMBARRASSING OUR PEOPLE.

Well Said Jonah, This has nothing to do with PFDJ, but to the fact that how unorganized we are and that we don’t take rules and regulatins seriiously, we don’t seek advise or don’t learn from out mistakes or don’t take notes for future reference.

      • Genet April 8, 2013

        Twoway street
YOU ARE WRONG. BECAUSE, IN FACT WE ERITREAN ARE VARY MUCH AWARE OF RULES AND REGULATIONS IN AMERICA. WE ARE HARDWORKING, HONEST AND RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS. “WE DON’T SEEK ADVICE OR DON’T LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES OR DON’T TAKE NOTES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE” YOU JUST CALLED US THAT WE ARE IDIOTS. I DISAGREE, BECAUSE WE ARE NOT IDIOTS. WE MAY NOT BE SMARTER THAN ANY OTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE BUT WE ARE NOT IDIOTS. IT SEEMS THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE SAYING “THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PFDJ” OBVIOUSLY, THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF WHAT IS GOING IN THE ERITREAN COMMUNITIES IN AMERICA. ERITREAN COMMUNITIES ARE BEING DISMANTLED BY PEOPLE LIKE THOSE IN DC. PEOPLE LIKE THAT ARE NOT PERSONALLY IDIOTS. BUT THEY ARE DOING A JOB THEY ARE TOLD TO DO. NO BODY IN THE RIGHT MIND WILL ELECT THOSE PEOPLE TO RUN A COMMUNITY. I AM SURE YOU GUYS CAN AGREE WITH ME. LET ME ASK YOU JONAH AND TWOWAY STREET,HOW COME THE SAME PEOPLE ARE IN CHARGE OF THE DC ERITREAN COMMUNITY FOR 15 TO 20 YEARS? IF THEY ARE NOT PFDJ OPERATIVES THEN WHY ARE THEY THERE FOR THAT LONG WHILE THEY ARE DOING A MISERABLE JOB? WHY?. DOES THAT SOUND FAMILIAR TO YOU GUYS? WHAT IS GOING ON IN ERITREA?

SO, NEXT TIME WHEN YOU GUYS GO TO ANY ERITREAN COMMUNITY, TO HAVE FUN, ASK WHO IS MANAGING THE COMMUNITY AND FOR HOW LONG. I CAN UNDERSTAND HOW YOU ARE SEEING THIS SITUATION. YOU GO THERE WHEN EVER THERE IS AN EVENT AND YOU HAVE FUN, YOU HUNG OUT WITH FRIENDS, YOU DRINK AND DANCE. THERE NOTHING, WRONG WITH HAVING FUN. BUT YOU NEED TO ASK HOW YOUR COMMUNITY IS MANAGED. WAY ARE THE SAME PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF THE COMMUNITY CENTER FOR 15 TO 20 YEARS?

    JONAH
I READ YOUR POST. COME OUT AND COME CLEAN YOU ARE PFDJ SUPPORTER. DON’T TRY TO BE NAIVE AND BENIGN ABOUT ISSUES. YOU ARE A HARD CORE PFDJ, WORKING TO SECURE THE DICTATOR’S POWER OVER ERITREAN. YOU ARE NOT FOOLING ANY ONE.

Oh boy! I like it when people tell me what I am and not ask. Feel free to disagree with my views. I thought Assenna is forum for Eritrean to openly express their view. It seems like having dialogue with Eritrean comes down to either you are traitor or supporter. Either you are betraying your people(pro-government) or you fooling your people(anti-gov). I am getting sense that some of the people commenting here are recent immigrant or people who just recently came to diaspora. Like I said, I was raised here in America not Eritrea. I don’t support the PDJF policies. I have been to center in DC and like I said in 90s I enjoyed going there meeting other Eritreans… it was way for us raised here to connect with our people and culture.
Genet- I don’t know about scams..From just reading the article. Yes- they didn’t handle the situation well because they didn’t understand the rules and regulation and were not properly prepared or use an expert. They should had someone better prepared to handle the situation. I am not sure if this due to PDJF or just these Eritreans educational level and familiarity with American regulation. Like I said for immigrant communities, it is not unusual whether chinese, vietnamese, or african. In terms of them doing that 15-20 years well- again this is not very unusual in immigrant communities in America.

        DEAR JONAH

YOU STATED THAT YOU WERE RAISED IN AMERICA. GOOD FOR YOU AND I AM HAPPY FOR YOU. YOU ARE IN A BETTER POSSITON TO HAVE A BETTER FUTURE FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN THAN OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN ERITREA. I AM SURE IT IS VERY HARD FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PFDJ SYSTEM IS DOING TO OUR PEOPLE AND THE FUTURE OF YOUNG ERITREAN. HAVE YOU BEEN TOLD THAT YOU WILL BE GOING FOR A NATINAL SERVICE INDEFINITELY? HAVE YOU ASKED YOURSELF THAT HOW COME THE ERITREAN GOV IS GOV. THE COUNTRY WITHOUT A CONSTITUTION? HAVE YOU ASKED YOUR SELF WHAT HAPPEN IF THE ERITREAN PRESIDENT DIES IN A NATURAL CAUSE? WHEN DID ERITREAN HAD AN ELECTION? YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN ANY STAND WHAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE DONE. YOUR POSITNG IS ALL ABOUT “CAN WE JUST GET ALONG?” THE ANSWER IS WE WISH, BUT IT IS NOT THAT EASY. AGAIN, IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO SAY I DON’T AGREE WITH PFDJ’S WAY OF GOV OUR COUNTRY. TELL US WHAT YOU DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE PFDJ SYSTEM?

YOU SAID YOU WERE RASIED IN AMERICA SO DO YOU KNOW MOST OF THE ERITREAN COMMUNITIES ARE CONTROLLD BY PFDJ OPERATIVES? THE ABOVE DC CASE IS A CLASSIC CASE. PFDJ OPERATIVE ACTING STUPID NOTHING MORE. THAY CAN’T BE THAT STUPID. WHAT DO YOU WNAT TO SAY ABOUT THE RECENT ERITREAN IMMIGRANT? YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE A HORROR STORY TO TELL ABOUT THE DICTATOR AND PFDJ’S WAY OF LIFE IN ERITREA.

JONAH, PLEASE DON’T DOGE MY QUESIONS? LIKE YOU DID IN THE PAST. EITHER WAY, YOU SUPPORT OR OPPOSE PFDJ SYSTEM, CLARIFY WHERE YOU STAND. THEN WE WILL HAVE A DIALOGUE. IF YOU DON’T CLARIFY YOUR INTENTION, THEN, YOU ARE HERE TO MUD UP THE WATER AND CONFUSING PEOPLE. THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING MY QUESIONS IN ADVANCE.

Genet- take it easy. I also traveled in Eritrea and visited my families there. I don’t need to explain how dysfunctional the country is.. I don’t need to go beyond the country not having free press or indefinite national service. As an American, I can’t support anything resembling the above. You are free to read my previous to understand my view. I just finished reading this book. Issias is top of list.

But I think this is tangent… I am surprised you can say I am trying to confuse people? It is strange because you are implying that Eritrean people are so simple that when someone says something.. they will get confused? I know we are lacking in literacy. Walking in the Asmara- you can’t find one bookstore, etc..

I believe people can think for themselves and draw their own conclusion. If you believe in free press then you have to believe people are capable of thinking for themselves. It is funny to me in that you oppose all the PDJF policies but at the same time.. your mentality similar to some of the ardent PDJF supporters I have encountered.
There is an old saying “Be careful when fighting a monster you don’t become one”
If you are fighting for freedom of speech, constitution, etc.. remember there will be people who disagree with you or have different view and that doesn’t make them PDJF supporters or people out to confuse. It just person expressing their views.. challenge the view if you like not the person. Minimize the Ad Hominem attacks the PDJF supporters have been using that form of attack to silence people and answer questions.

            DEAR JONAH
            I REST MY CASE.

FYI, DON’T FORGET THAT YOU AND I, AS ERITREAN ARE IN A BETTER POSITION TO DEMAND CHANGE FOR OUR PEOPLE IN ERITREA WHO ARE LEFT VOICE LESS. IN THE 21TH CENTURY PEOPLE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO LEAVE LIKE IN THE 1600. THE GREAT CIVIL RIGHT LEADER MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. SAID.

“THE ULTIMATE MEASURE OF A MAN IS NOT WHERE HE STANDS IN MOMENTS OF COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE, BUT WHERE HE STANDS AT TIMES OF CHALLENGE AND CONTROVERSY”

I AM SORRY IF I CAME DOWN ON YOU HARD. I JUST WANT YOU TO BE AWARE OF THE OBVIOUS ABOUT OUR PEOPLE’S SUFFERING AND OUR FUTURE AS A PEOPLE AND COUNTRY ERITREA. EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU ARE AMERICAN, YOU CAN STILL SPEAK UP FOR THE ERITREAN PEOPLE IN ERITREA. AFTER ALL IT IS THE AMERICAN WAY TO SUPPORT THE UNDER DOG.

            JONAH MY BROTHER
I RATHER BE A MONSTER WHO FIGHTS AN ATROCIOUS SYSTEM, AND A MAN WHO BECAME A DICTAOTR INFRONT OF MY EYES, THAN A MONSTER WHO SUPPORTS THE PFDJ SYSTEM.
MY INTENTION IS NOT TO IMPLY THAT OUR PEOPLE ARE SIMPLE MINDED. ALTHOUGH A MAJORITY OF ERITREAN IN DIASPORA (AMERICA) ARE WITHOUT A FORMAL EDUCATION, THEY ARE NOT STUPID. PROBABLY MOST OF THEM ARE SMARTER THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON. THEY PROVED THAT BY SERVIVING IN THE AMERICAN SYSTEM.

WHEN IT COMES TO OUR COUNTRY’S CURRENT ISSUES, MOST OF THEM ARE NOT SURE HOW TO DEAL WITH IT. SO WHEN PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND I, COME HERE AND PUT OUT AMBIGUOUS MESSAGEs, THEY GET CONFUSED. IF YOU TALK TO THME, MOST OF THEM WANT EVERTHING TO WORK OUT FOR THE BETTER FOR OUR PEOPLE AND COUNTRY. MY POINT IS IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE OUR POINT CLEAR, REGARDLESS OF WE SUPPORT THE PFDJ SYSTEM OR WE OPPOSE IT FOR ITS ACTION AGAINST OUR PEOPLE AND OUR COUNTRY’S FUTURE.

I AM SILL GIVING HIM (JONAH) THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT. I AM ASKING HIM TO EXPLAIN WAY HE DOESN’T SUPPORT THE PFDJ SYSTEM? FOR EX. I DON’T SUPPORT THE PFDJ SYSTEM AND THE PRESIDENT WHO IS NOW A DICTATOR WITH A BELL AND WHISTLE. BECAUSE, NO CONSTITUTION, NO RULE OF LAW, NO ACCREDITED UNIVERSITY, PUTTING THE ICONIC UNIVERSITY OF ASMARA OUT WORK AND DENYING THE YOUNG ERITREA FORMAL EDUCATION. OPEN ENDED FREE NATIONAL SERVICE INDEFINITELY. FORGETTING THAT IT IS THE PRESIDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE ERITREAN ARE SAFE IN THEIR COUNTY. HE HAS ALL THE POWER TO STOP THE SINI HORROR THAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR SISTERS AND BROTHERS. EVERY BODY IN DIASPORA SHOULD DEMAND AN ACTION BY THE ERITREAN GOV. THOSE PEOPLE IN SINI, THEY DON’T HAVE TO BE MY/YOUR IMMEDIATE FAMILIES. THEY ARE ERITREAN. SO JONAH, DO YOU AGREE WITH MY POINT THAT THE ERITREAN GOV HAVE TO MAKE CHANGES THE WAY THE OUR COUNTRY IS MANAGED?
