Michael Abraha – Hawassa

Close to 600 delegates have assembled in Hawassa to begin what is seen as historic National Congress representing diverse groupings of exiled pro-democracy Eritreans embodying a wide spectrum of social and political interests and persuasions.

The main objective is to hasten the demise of the PFDJ rule in Eritrea – widely seen as one of the most inept and reviled dictatorships of the 21st century.

The Congress is the largest gathering of its kind since Isaias Afewerki’s group assumed state authority two decades ago without guarantees for human rights and rule of law.

The Congress comes against the backdrop of reported revelations that the PFDJ is participating in scandalous human trafficking involving its own citizens many of whom are herded into horrifying torture hideouts in the Sinai Desert near the Israeli border to be butchered by Bedouin criminal agents who sell the victims’ vital organs to the highest international bidder. The Congress is also taking place at a time of increasing fears that the PFDJ regime is using food shortage as a political means to further bully and intimidate the citizenry to ensure no social uprising is contemplated by anyone.

More than 60 civic organizations and 32 political parties are expected to take part in the Congress. Some individuals and groups have opted not to participate because of disagreements over procedural and strategy questions.

Amha Dominico, Chairman of the Eritrean National Congress for Democratic Change, ENCDC, speaks of the high stakes for a successful outcome no matter what obstacles stand on the way. In a brief interview with this reporter at his Addis Ababa office on the eve of the Congress, Amha said he was particularly proud that participants paid for their travel expenses to come to Ethiopia for the Congress, adding this was “a qualitative development in our struggle”.

Amha sees the National Congress as a milestone in the Eritrean democratic process which not only confirms “our political maturity as a credible opposition but will also pose a serious challenge to the PFDJ regime.” He said it was up to the delegates to determine what plans of action to take for the future of the country. Amha says Participants will deliberate, among other major items, on ways of speeding up the ouster of PFDJ’s tyrannical rule and on how to proceed with the task of building a peaceful and democratic country.

The ENCDC was authorized by a national conference in August last year to prepare and organize the Congress as a forum for serious national dialogue among democratic forces with the aim of creating a united front. Answerable to the National Congress, the Commission has been entrusted with the task of preparing documents to be presented to the National Congress, among them, a political charter, a road map for change and draft transitional constitution.

Amha stated that the gathering will reaffirm national unity and sovereignty while upholding diversity. The role of youth and women will be among the major items for discussion. Participants will also examine ways of consolidating and upgrading communications with the Eritrean people inside the country. Amha said the Congress will form a new transitional political structure to be made up of civic and political entities – about 60% and 40 % ratio respectively. The new resistance front will work closely with all political parties, says Amha.

On the role of Ethiopia, the ENCDC Chairman expressed his appreciation to the EPRDF Government for its essential support including accommodations to the participants. “Ethiopia does not interfere with our affairs. We share common values, outlook and keen interest in peace and development for the two countries.” Amha concluded.

The beginning of the end is in sight of the oppressive regime in Eritrea, the supporters of such a regime are those who have not encountered any ill effect to them or their loved ones. But for those who lost their loved ones and still suffering under the ones who at one time endured themselves the brutal Ethiopian rule since Haile Selasse 1961 to the last rule of Mengestu Haile Mariam. After they liberated Eritrea, promised to govern justly and fairly. After twenty long years of corrupt and unjust rule of this regime, time have come, in fact way overdue for a change. What our Brothers doing this time in Addis Ababa in historic, and I hope for their success, that this gathering of all the participants will bring, hopefully a better Eritrea of tomorrow.

@ zemen  beraki .. Kubukr Haw, I and my Eritrean fighters in Washington,DC work hard and defend Waela the last year and half to be succseful but now the GUBAE hajaked by Emha and his gangs by selecting more than 200 people to participate in GUBAE and by blocking  Daniel Tewelde from GUBAE so this GUBAE the way they manage it  don’t represent me , you or our people .  if you are for real democracy ask a question why Daniel was out from GUBAE and how 200 people selected by Emba and his Ganges to participate to GUBAE .

      Daniel
I do not agree with your excuse. So because of this incident you give up fighting. Who you fighting for,
to yourself or to your people. You think is fair to abandon your brothers/sisters who are in this political
movements. If we didn’t try to correct our mistakes who would will. Don’t give up men.

        TO ASSENA JOURNALISTS
WHY YOU REMAINED ABSTAINED ABOUT DANIEL TEWELDE CASE? SO FAR I HAD BEEN USING ASSENA AS MY SOURCE OF NEWS AND NORMALLY I EXPECTED TO HEAR FROM ASSENA THE ARGUMENTS CONTINUED WITH IN THE SO CALLED BAITO OF COOMISIONERS IN ADDIS BUT ASSENA HARDLY CITED IN ITS PROGRAM YHE ISSUE. ATLEAST LET US NOW ASSENA’S STAND ON THE MATTER.

@ahmed Salih :… I am not quit fighting for myself and my people but I will not support this GUBAE because everybody is innocent until proven guilt there is no prove that  Daniel Tewelde is an agent of PFDJ . If  we are pro democracy WE HAVE TO SAY LOUD NOW ….. We should have not repeat the same drama what happened to Jehovah witness, Muslims, new churches, ELF members inside Eritrea and G15.

Amha’s main fair is that Daniel could be elected in this congress meeting as a chairman therefore it was time for him to react to frozen daniel from the commission. If the Wala completed its meeting with out discussing this issue, we are replacing PFDJ1 by PFDJ 2.

We need to open our eyes before it is late. Oue medias also should play positive role by contacting both sides. Until this happen we couldn’t support this Wala.

Those who may have seen them, may God keep their eyes bright and open. Those who may have heard their voices, may Gd clear their ears and leave it open. And for those who are tirelessly working for their release, may God bless them. If anyone wonders what the “heck” I am talking about, I am talking about the two Eritrean journalists who were taken captives by the barbaric woyane regime when it invaded its eastern neighbor in 2006. Those who are involved in the profession of journalism have chosen not to mention their names and the international community has sadly become indifferent to their sufferings. The two Eritrean journalists were reporting news from Somalia like so many others at the time when the barbaric woyane arrested them and no one has ever heard about them since then. Injustice to any Eritrean is injustice to all Eritreans. Let us raise our voices in their names until the barbaric woyane regime releases from its atrocious prison cells or our tell the world about what happened to them.

      Tsehaye

The arabs say “when the belly is full, the eye is blind” It is worthy of our concern to advocate for those suffering injustice regardless. Unfortunately, the sold out opposition are allergic to truth. For example take the Toronto based pseudo journalist Aaron Berhane, despite having children here in the west would for sure be adversely affected by his brazen lie of Eritreans as to be planning to mount “terrorist attack on Canada” to the National Post of that country goes to show how immersed these people are in wonyane inspired evil. Imagine that if they don’t give an iota to their very own flesh and blood’s welfare, what they have in store for everybody else. By begging for comprehensive economic sanctions they were ‘praying’ for countless defenseless Eritrean infants be needlessly slaughtered. They would go to any woreda or tabia the woyane would take them, wearing whatever outfit it wants them to wear pleading, crying and boot licking to have them find form the next toy govt. in exile. They are hopeless when it comes to character/principle that is the bedrock of credible social enterprise.

        Kozami,

I cannot agree more with the statement of the Arabs. In fact, I had once said in this website in reference to the sell-out opposition, “zbelet kebdi imo kemei gera defira ktzareb”. It is mind boggling to see that those who are supposed to be at the forefront of defending for their colleagues’ rights are absolutely quiet. We have heard some of them and others talking about Dawit Isaac and others who are believed to be in prison. Why are those on the opposition side so indifferent to the suffering of their two brothers who also believed to have been snatched by the barbaric woyane regime in style that is comparable to a hostage taking? That is how Eritrean politics is played: the brother or sister on the other side of the isle is an enemy and is not worth defending from any. As to the oppositions’ “guwaylan dankeran” that we are witnessing at the moment because of the meeting they are carrying out in a remote Ethiopian town, it is just party of their “hashewiye” ceremony that they have been doing it at this time of the year. It is time of festivities (Thanksgiving, Christmas, ngdet, mer’a tri weze-terefe). There is only one road that can lead them to Asmara: condemn woyane’s occupation of Eritrea’s territory, abandon ethnic and religious politics, and believe in the indivisible integrity of Eritrea (no free of secession).

          • Tsahaye November 23, 2011

            Abdi,

Thanks for the nice comment. I believe that it is okay to agree not to agree on our different political views about how to make Eritrea a better country, but we cannot afford to let a bunch of warlords, ethnic based secessionists and their sponsor (the barbaric woyane) to create chaos and eventually break the nation of heroes and heroines.

      TSEHAYE
THOUGH I FEEL BAD TO SEE OUR BROTHERS TO BE CAPTURED BY ANY FORCE, AND MAY GOD SAVE AND RETURN THEM BACK TO THEIR FAMILY, MY WORRY IS WHY SHABIA HAS SENT THEM TO SOMALIA? WHY SHABIA HAS OPENED TV PROGRAM IN SOMALIA LANGUAGE WHERE NO ETHNIC OF ERITREA HAS USED TO TALK IN SOMALI. BECAUSE IT IS THE DICTATORS BEHAVIOR TO DISTURB THE PEACE OF ERITREAN PEOPLE AND THE REGION AS A WHOLE.

  • Cicero-paradiso November 22, 2011

What had happened to daniel tewelde? Where is he now? He worked hard just to be discarded like a trash?
Is this the democracy this good for nothing waela talks about?
if daniel is not protected by law, who is going to be protected?
first they changed the date of the waela, to get rid of most young Eritreans, then they accused daniel of PFDK agent, he was a leading member of the young generation thrown just like trash.
this waela will accomplish zero except cheap promises as before.
    freedom to g15,
    freedom to daniel
    freedom to Eri journalists

    part 1
Like the say goes, “something is better than nothing.” The EDP weather they good or bad they are better than me, better than EPDP´s “Menya Kollel” for noting fruit like, the all time meaningless and fruitless Waila and seminar. EPDP despite they have many good political policies, they simply are wasting time. Atleast EDP doing their best. However i don´t think, as long the oppositions unless not supported by prominent worthy politician and politic makers, like by Gemmy Carter, Bill Clinton or alikes, i doubt weather they be able to succeed. This diplomacy deficiency and the incapability of the controversial politicians leaders figure they have both in EDP, and EPDP parties is also i think another their measure mistakes and weakness, which makes all their efforts fruitless, weather you agreed or not.

  • truly, Truly i say to you November 23, 2011

    part 2
In this conference if the participants realy think about the future good destiny of our nation ,and they realy not gathering for having power, they have to choose and include public leaders figure,even-though right now they not sit together inside the conference with you, from in religious moral very cultivated capable politician citizens, from silent intellectuals, silent experienced diplomats, trust worthy citizens that not involved or suspected by any involvement of crimes, inorder the vast silent majority to trust and follow you, But if you like to continue with old Gebha ,Shabia theatre, specially with controversial leaders figure, i prefer to die with my known devil Isayas 10 times than you. To those power hungry as their primer agenda, I will remind the word, what the wise Son of David once has said it; “Fast runners do not always win the races, the brave do not always win the battle. Wise men do not always earn a living, intelligent men do not always get rich, and capable men do not rise to high position. Bad luck happens to everyone. You never know when your time is coming,…(Ecclesiastes 9;11-12) like wise, those you dreaming for power may be your dream will taken by unexpected lucky one. Anyhow it is good to know, power is responsibility to rule in justice, not like tyrants Isayas and Gadafi to oppress people.

  • Moses November 23, 2011

I can tell just from the picture more than half of the participants of this conference are from Tigray who were born or raised in Eritrea. The rest can be people who never supported Eritrean independence for their own selfish reasons and some coule be the sons and daughters of pro ANDINET unionists.

Eritrea will never kneel down !

    • Abdi November 23, 2011

I agree, you are absolutely right, i kept asking myself what kind of eritrean faces are these?”chew zeyblom wqabe’om zeyfteweka”,facha agame.
