MANHATTAN — An African diplomat was found dead in a hotel near the United Nations Friday morning, sources said.
The man, who was in his 60s, was discovered unconscious and unresponsive at the Millennium Hotel, at 2 UN Plaza, at 10:40 a.m. after he failed to show up for a meeting, police sources said.
The Eritrean delegate was later pronounced dead. Fire officials said they responded to a call of a person found dead at 10:44 a.m. The permanent mission of Eritrea to the UN did not immediately respond to calls for comment.
The hotel also did not immediately comment.
No criminality was suspected in the incident and sources said the man died of natural causes. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
The UN maintains offices in the the building, but a spokeswoman said that the death had nothing to do with those offices or any others under UN control.
The General Assembly is in session this week.

Regardless of which side he is on, I believe the death of an Eritrean is to be mourned. Reading through the comments above, I see that many have sunk so low to be making pitiless comments on the passing of an individual. Such level of discourse does not unravel the problems in our country, nor does it address the challenges our people face everyday. The passing of an Eritrean should not be a source of amusement to anybody with any sense of being. Thus, please restrain yourselves at least out of respect for his family! NewRi Eyu Ezi ZereBA. Two of Issais’ diplomats accredited to UN that were not in attendance at the “historic speech” are Araya Desta and Tesfalem seyoum. Both are in their 60s. Both are the kinder versions of PFDJ, the crime syndicate. This is my personal view. Unfortunately, if you are part of a crime syndicate, you are criminal by association. Of course, we all are aware of Issaias Minilik, Yemane monkey and Hagos Kisha, are the top echelon of the PFDJ, crime syndicate.

Trusted sources indicated that the Hgdef Eritrean diplomat who died at the NY hotel was a veteran diplomat with many years of experience. The sources indicated that Issaias Afaf was not happy about the recent performance of the diplomat and he was facing a recall back to Eritrea or worse.
Isaias was not happy about the diplomat’s ability and work, in fact Isaias barked at and humiliated the diplomat several times in front of many other Hgdefites including in the last 24 hours while they were drafting the final UN speech. Isaias told the dead diplomat how worthless the draft speech was, and how ill-informed he was, to the shaken diplomat.
The New York City coronary report may show either the diplomat died of heart attack caused by the stress and shock or killed himself.
This had happened before to Dr. Weldeab Issac, the former president of Asmara University, when Issaias told weldeab about the closing of the university.
