Dear Fellow Eritreans in the Diaspora,

We are writing to invite you to be a signatory of a call that we will soon issue to all Eritreans in the Diaspora to join a Grassroots Movement whose goal is to elect Global Leaders who will represent Eritreans in the Diaspora.

The independence of our country that was achieved at the terrible cost of hundreds of thousands of its sons and daughters who have been martyred and maimed, has not resulted in a better life for Eritreans.   Quite to the contrary, the situation has been far worse than any time even when Eritrea was subjugated by colonial powers.  In fact, the Eritrean experience, especially in recent years, has been one of the worst in world history.

Therefore, it is high time that we Eritreans in the Diaspora in the first place get united and organized to save our people and our country from the untold misery that we are all aware of. It is encouraging to know that there are already Eritreans in many parts of the world who are organized or are being organized at the grassroots level to save their people. However, to be more effective, such efforts must be linked up and reinforced by a democratically formed global body that can coordinate and guide the activities at the grassroots level.  We believe that the absence of such a global body has been the Achilles Heel of the Eritrean opposition.  We now need to provide this vital missing link, to wit, a global coordinating body.  Clearly, such a global body is not meant to replace or weaken the work of the various grassroots groups at city or regional levels or political organizations, but rather to create a link between them and coordinate and forge their activities and bring about concrete results to remove the dictatorship and usher in  democratic dispensation for our long suffering people. This has eluded us so far because of our disunity – which has to now change at the earliest.  We have no purpose other than this.

The task of forming the said global body is open to any Eritrean who is willing and able to contribute to the success of the mission we have outlined.  This is why we are making an open call to all Eritreans. With this in mind, the individuals whose names appear below will serve as a provisional task force to invite Eritrean brothers and sisters who are willing to be signatories of “An Urgent Call to All Eritreans Worldwide.”

This, we believe, is the most expedient way of facilitating the process of uniting Eritreans so that we can collectively elect legitimate global leaders whose charge is to prepare the groundwork for transitioning Eritrea to be a democratic country.  In the process, an attempt will be made to involve all grassroots civic and civil Eritrean organizations and groups, political parties, religious, ethnic and language   groups, both genders, the youth,  etc. We understand change will come from within the country, and we believe that those change agents within the country will be more encouraged and emboldened if the Eritrean Diaspora, including the Eritrean opposition political parties, work together.

The Urgent Call to All Eritreans will appeal to all the various constituent groups in the Diaspora. We believe this call to all Eritreans in the Diaspora, will be more successful if more Eritreans in the five continents join hands as signatories of the invitation letter.

Those who may have good reasons not to lend their names as signatories, will have a role to play in the realization of the success of the Grassroots Movement in a variety of ways that will be described in the invitation letter.

We are requesting those who would like to be signatories of the letter to contact us using this email address   gieegm@googlegroups.com. If you have any questions or if you need clarification, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Those willing to be signatories will have the opportunity to read and suggest improvements before the Invitation Letter is made public

Who are we?

We, the undersigned, are a diverse group of Eritrean activists from all walks of life with different backgrounds located in various parts of the world. We are mainly composed of various groups who have been, as a group or as individuals, advocating the grassroots movement. As our name i.e.Global Initiative to Empower Eritrean Grassroots’ Movement (GIEEGM)” signifies, we are taking this initiative to pave the way for every Eritrean to participate in bringing positive changes in our country. What brought us together is our conviction that the bottom-up grassroots movement is the most expedient, all-inclusive and democratic way that can end our country’s problems.  We are not a political organization, and the initiative we are taking is not motivated by our desire to assume any leadership role.  All that we are doing is to facilitate the election of Global Leaders by involving Eritreans in the Diaspora at the grassroots level.

      Ahmed,

What are your solutions? Do we need a leader these days?

This website has become a power of tegadelti and men 🙁

Where are all our powerful sisters and mothers?

In my view, we all need to work hard 24/7/365 against the PFDJ and his followers.

Power is the people of Eritrean!!

My brother Ahmed – Let’s give hope a chance; successes is elusive but achievable. If you had told me in the mid-80s that Eritrea would be free by 1991 I would probably have said never but that is exactly what happened.

The Eritrean people should unite, we have nothing to lose but a nasty dictator.

      Eritrea forever, death to dictatorship.

    Dear All

Those who already responded to our call positively; I would like to thank you on the behalf of the group; and please continue to contact us in the email given to you so that we can reach you personally so that we can engage each other to think to one direction.
Those WHO are negative or hesitate; but believe change needed in Eritrea; please forwarded your comment; to work only with those WHO agree with our idea mean collation; but we to work with those having different idea; that is working with all difference mean cooperation; therefore; idea difference mean is diversity and that sign of unity.
Remember; disunity among coalition members within a democratic movement can result in a loss of trust and confidence in the movement’s ability to achieve political reforms. This loss of trust then contributes to atomization of society, which in turn, promotes a sense of hopelessness and defeatism. Due to lack of unity among citizens every one becomes directly or indirectly vulnerable for a massive physical and psychological torture of the dictator regime
Moreover, the dangerous sentiment of citizens to abstain from taking responsibility or cooperating with other organizations movement gives a room for dictator regime. Furthermore, the Eritrean dictatorial regime knows value of unity throughout his army struggle. As a result, is working hardly to create fear among the citizens to promote disunity. However; the most frustrating thing is that at this situation is the silence of brothers, sisters and friends.
Let me conclude with a saying of Martine Luther saying, we must meet hate with love. We must meet physical force with soul force. There is still a voice crying out through the vista of time, saying: Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you. Then, and only then, can you matriculate into the University of Eternal Life. That same voice cries out in terms lifted to cosmic proportions: He who lives by the sword will perish by the sword. And history is replete with the bleached bones of nations that failed to follow this command.
Again remember “if I donot do it myself; then WHO will do it; if not today then When”

Eng Desalegin; thank you very much; you put exactly our ultimate goal of the group; once we have estibllished local leaders; then upscale to global leader; then information and ideas comes from bottom; action plan back from top to bottom continued cycle of commincation.

    Thank you
    Zewoldi

    Dear All,

Thank you very much for your comments and responses to various comments. You are the pioneers of positive discussion and engagement. At this crucial time of Aferkbu, awareness and action has to go hand in hand. GIEEGM is an attempt to bring awareness and the badly needed united action to end the Eritrean nightmare. We have discussed and deliberated for very long with limited results. Going forward, our discussion should be matched by concerted united action by each and every Eritrean citizen. The urgent call of our time is then to pave a viable way for every justice seeker Eritrean to come together and join their voice and their efforts to unleash citizen power to remove tyranny and end the suffering of our people.

Once again, thank you for your tireless efforts to raise awareness for untied action through the neutral and transparent grassroots approach.

It is good idea to say grass root movement; but we need strong political organization; most of the initiative coming from public movement are saying we are not political organization. Let us work together and join the political organization that can play driving force to bring the public together. Our lack is not grass root movement that can stand against the PFDJ gangs; we are big in number. How ever we have lack of transferring our words to action. PFDJ is coward therefore we need coward action not public movement. This coward action against PFDJ gangs can be full-fill only by well organised political part. No doubt the public and the media can play a big role in bringing change but without well organised political party nothing can be achieved

    victory to the justice seekers!!

Hey assena work towards unity onstead of wasting your time on ramifications. Present your proposals to a forum involving the various oppositions.Stop exponentially hatching groups while urgent practical action is needed to save the country and its people

  • Amanuel April 25, 2016

    Well well well
Some suggested strong political party which can rally people. With the opposition groups that we have, unity is an impossible goal to achieve. They all are suspicious of each other or their individual interest takes first place. Whether we have one or not we are the people, we are the power, and we are not organized at grass root level. Thus we need to organize at community level and then link up to form global body. No question this will have a big muscle to crush not only the dictator and it’s gangs but will also help ensure democratic rights are preserved.
