REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS
22 DECEMBER 2011
PRESS RELEASE

Focus on Africa – Mogadishu and Abidjan are among these 10 places

2011 in figures:

66 journalists killed (16% more than in 2010)
1,044 journalists arrested
1,959 journalists physically attacked or threatened
499 media censored
71 journalists kidnapped
73 journalists fled their country
5 netizens killed
199 bloggers and netizens arrested
62 bloggers and netizens physically attacked
68 countries subject to Internet censorship

Reporters Without Borders has this year, for the first time, compiled a list of the world’s 10 most dangerous places for the media – the 10 cities, districts, squares, provinces or regions where journalists and netizens were particularly exposed to violence and where freedom of information was flouted.

Overall, 2011 took a heavy toll on media freedom. The Arab Spring was at the centre of the news. Of the total of 66 journalists killed in 2011, 20 were killed in the Middle East (twice as many as in 2010). A similar number were killed in Latin America, which is very exposed to the threat of criminal violence. For the second year running, Pakistan was the single deadliest country with a total of 10 journalists killed, most of them murdered. China, Iran and Eritrea continue to be the world’s biggest prisons for the media.

The Arab Spring, the protest movements it inspired in nearby countries such as Sudan and Azerbaijan, and the street protests in other countries such as Greece, Belarus, Uganda, Chile and the United States were responsible for the dramatic surge in the number of arrests, from 535 in 2010 to  1,044 in 2011. There were many cases of journalists being physically obstructed in the course of their work (by being detained for short periods or being summoned for interrogation), and for the most part they represented attempts by governments to suppress information they found threatening.

The 43 per cent increase in physical attacks on journalists and the 31 per cent increase in arrests of netizens – who are leading targets when they provide information about street demonstrations during media blackouts – were also significant developments in a year of protest. Five netizens were killed in 2011, three of them in Mexico alone.

From Cairo’s Tahrir Square to Khuzdar in southwestern Pakistan, from Mogadishu to the cities of the Philippines, the risks of working as a journalist at times of political instability were highlighted more than ever in 2011. The street was where danger was to be found in 2011, often during demonstrations that led to violent clashes with the security forces or degenerated into open conflict. The 10 places listed by Reporters Without Borders represent extreme cases of censorship of the media and violence against those who tried to provide freely and independently reported news and information.

I will put Eritrea at the top of the list as it is the only country who jailed the journalists with due process.Eritreans journalists jailed for the last 10 years and none of them brought to court. There were are also strong evidence most of them died of due to in solitary confinement. Iran and others have free media but also use their laws to prosecute journalists. In Pakistan it is not the state that kills the journalist but some groups who think their interest is threatened so it should be kept in mind that Eritrea situation it is not only a bout the free press but also human right issue.

      gasha,

Welcome back, I hope that will help DIA learn how you work with sanction…You clear your head and do some soul searching. ..that means you can no longer be in denial of truth….other than that you have a right to debate on points but do not point and burst the eyeball of “truth”…I invite you to dialogue with me very geniunely but without hoodwinking the truth…in that invitatio , let us watch a movie together…I will call it for now the movie is called “Hypocraciy”…and to that democratic view I will let you change it…but you must finish the movie….What we will do after that is learn and critic the charcters…because they are exactly us.

      Tesfaledet
Those ugly sold out picture you said had been sanctioned for their life for more
than 10 years. Before we care about this new sanction, we are demanding IA
to resolve his own self-seeking sanctions presented to his own people first.
Then we talk about the latter.

  • tesfaldet December 23, 2011

ahmed saleh this tireitors try to sell their people & countrys to become leaders by lies & propoganda to weyane & C IA so they deserve what they get so non one will take the time to talk abaout them because evry eritrean fammily lost some 2 some 3 for their bloved countrys so this sell outs try to give it to the enemy if you dont understand

    • ahmed saleh December 23, 2011

You are wrong Tesfaledet. First of all do not forget they sacrificed their whole life to
the Eritrean struggle for freedom. Second if they are guilty as you said, why not we
hear their side story of the matter, where is the law of justice and where is the
right of a citizen to defend, represent himself to clear his name to reclaim his integrity. We suppose to show a little compassion to them, because they deserve it
Is these what you wish and dream in HADDAS ERITREA. It is wrong to let humans to get burned out and lose enthusiasm. Unfortunately it shows the betrayal of some Eritreans to our patriotic fellows. Wake up brother smell the fish before it is too late. Analyze youself IA politics and teaching as mature person with open mind, try to distinguish the good and the wrong ideas.

    • Huluf December 24, 2011

      tesfaldet,

No, do not lie- I know for a fact Dr. Ghideon did not loose any brother, I also know Sofia Tesfamria did not loose a single member of his family. Go check most of the people screaming Wodi Afom, have no clue of our struggle….You may have fooled yourself innocently but you can not fool us….forget those that have given their life who are completely betrayed by all of us including the dictator and higdef…how about Military Genius, Strategist and top Espionage master who gave Mengistu Hailemariam hell – knowing all his move Petros Solomon is in jail with his wife…his children have no parents ….So stop preaching us….!! Wake Up!!….DIA is selling our country…Do you know 6 of hs mnrpthers and his stisters live in a CIA country , super power nation that is “evil” called America….how does that happen? Please make those great Eritran parents of yours not ashame by making a fool of youself.

HOW DA HELL DO YOU KNOW THEY ARE A SELL OUT WHO TOLD YOU , SOME TIMES IT IS NOT WHAT IA IS DOING WHAT MAKES ME ANGRY, IT IS PEOPLE LIKE WHO BLINDLY ACCEPT THE OFFICIAL LINE YOU ARE GIVEN ,YOU DON’T HAVE BRAIN TO THINK CRITICALLY , BUT I BELIEVE YOU HAVE A HIDDEN AGENDA , TO DESTROY WHAT IS LEFT OF THE COUNTRY, I AM SURE YOU DON”T HAVE A FRIEND OR RELATIVE WHO HAS BEEN ARRESTED OR DON”T CARE ABOUT ERITREANS WHO ARE SUFFERING BY THE GOVERNMENT ,BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT REAL ERITREAN, YOU ARE A FAKE ARS ERITREAN

  • aurora bruk December 24, 2011

i think there is a virus called zerai selomon out there. or is it a bacteria?
gasha and tesfaldet are compaining because their comments have been deleted. amazing! what comments were they, anyways? as i see it, these fools have nothing to say about what is being discussed. just like many others who support the lunatic dictator, they can not come up with arguments and they simply cannot try to discuss them like civilized individuals. bottom line is, they have nothing to say, except try to offend people who stand up. just the people iseyas wants us to be, unquestioning and metakati.

  • aurora bruk December 24, 2011

just like sofia and gedeon. i can not expect such self-centered people, to even start imagining, what we the Eritrean people are made to endure. it is an insult to the Diaspora Eritreans, to even be linked to such narrow-minded people, whose education is only good on paper. and we all know, why eseyas chose them. he wants to use them. but time will come when he will throw them out the window. everyone is a throwaway in eseyas’s little dynasty. just wait and see. gasha and tesfaldet? you are deleting yourselves by advocating for the dictator. you need to rethink before it is too late.

  • aurora bruk December 24, 2011

and Eritrea is also, the number one jailer of journalists. so it is the most dangarous place for journalists to work in. dictatorship and free press are, like water and oil- they simply do not mix. just like Asena and eseyas. like the Eritrean people and the dictator. in Eritrea, 4 million Eritreans are told to shut up. the only one who is doing the talking is, the only one, who has nothing at all to say. a number of our peots and writers, and tens of thousands of our people are also languishing in eseyas’s prisons. the dictator’s sleepless nights will soon be over. he will die very soon now. because he has eaten 4 million Eritrean lives. he has ruined our nation. all he cares about is our minerals. down with him.

    • gasha December 24, 2011

      bruk
Each time i comment i just want atleast one person to read it and i am happy with that after that it doesnt matter if it is deleted or what so ever. The truth is powerfull and that is why some alekti of awassa try to delet it.
