We shouldn’t automatically label immigrants ‘illegal’, but tell that to the EU, especially when it comes to Italy’s accord with Libya

If I could delete just one term from the English language it would have to be “illegal immigrants”. The notion that it is a crime to risk one’s life fleeing poverty in search of a better life abroad is an affront to the most elementary tenets of justice. And yet politicians and journalists (myself included, in the past) routinely designate such people as illegal without a second thought.

A further 73 African refugees have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea as they attempted to sail from Libya to Italy. According to the UN refugee aid organization, 525 boat refugees died at sea in 2008 and several hundred have already drowned this year.

Italian authorities have rescued five Eritreans adrift near a southern Italian island.

It is the latest immigration tragedy in the waters between Africa and the remote southern Italian island of Lampedusa. The Italian authorities received a call from the Maltese that there were immigrants attempting to reach shore on a rubber dinghy.

It all started with the resolution of the member sates meeting of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development, then bolstered by the request of the African Union to the United Nations Security Council regarding sanctions against the rogue regime in Eritrea.

Kenya revealed on Friday that it had deported an Eritrean diplomat “for security reasons” hours before the country’s Foreign Minister made an abrupt visit to Nairobi seeking audience with President Kibaki.

The diplomat is the second Eritrean to be expelled from Kenya in as many months on grounds of “security” — which is diplomatic speak for involvement in activities that undermine the host country. He was described as a businessman.

She said after talks with Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, that Eritrea’s actions were “unacceptable”. She also said the US would expand support for Somalia’s unity government.

BOGOTA – Colombian navy personnel detained Saturday in Caribbean waters 34 citizens of Eritrea who were sailing towards Central America after entering the country illegally, regional military officials said.The foreigners were in an unlicensed vessel with two Colombian crew members, who were also taken into custody, Colombia’s navy commander for the Caribbean, Adm. Roberto Garcia, said.
