Trump rides wave of anti-establishment sentiment to one of the most improbable political victories in modern US history.

Donald Trump shattered expectations on Tuesday with an election night victory that revealed deep anti-establishment anger among American voters and set the world on a journey into the political unknown.

The Republican nominee has achieved one of the most improbable political victories in modern US history, despite a series of controversies that would easily have destroyed other candidacies, extreme policies that have drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle, a record of racist and sexist behaviour, and a lack of conventional political experience.

After surprise early victories in Florida, North Carolina and Ohio, it fell to the Rust Belt states of the industrial midwest to determine the result of his stunning upset.

Wisconsin and Michigan, two states hit hard by a decline in manufacturing jobs and lost by Hillary Clinton to Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary, were led by Trump as the race headed for an early morning cliffhanger.

At 2.30am, the Associated Press projected Trump had won Wisconsin and called the overall race for Trump, who passed the 270 electoral college votes he needed to secure the presidency.

Shortly afterwards, Clinton called Trump to concede but did not make a public address.

Trump left Trump Tower for the short journey to the Hilton Midtown, where the president-elect then took to the stage and insisted he would “deal fairly with everyone”.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, complicated business, complicated business,” began Trump to raucous chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A” from his excited supporters.

“I have just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us – it’s about us and our victory – and I congratulated her on a very hard fought campaign.

“Now it is time for Americans to bind the wounds of division,” he added. “It is time for us to become together as one united people … I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans.”

Earlier, Democratic campaign chairman John Podesta appeared before distraught supporters to announce that she would not be appearing to give a concession speech. “Everybody should head home,” he told them. “Get some sleep. We’ll have more to say tomorrow.

“It’s been a long night and a long campaign,” he added. “We can wait a little longer, can’t we? They are still counting votes and every vote counts, several states are too close to call so we are not going to have anything more to say tonight.”

“This is a historic night,” said vice-president-elect Mike Pence, in the first official Republican response, introducing Trump. “The American people have spoken and the American people have elected their new champion.”

Republicans have also secured majorities in the House of Representatives, the Senate and will probably get to reappoint a fifth Republican nominee to the supreme court – potentially leaving the new president with few checks and balances.

Investors reeled from the prospect of a victory that would reverberate around the world and futures markets pointed to a fall of nearly 600 points in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

As results started to come in, two candidates with very different views of America were watching television just two minutes’ walk from each other: the Clintons at the Peninsula Hotel in midtown Manhattan and the Republican team in Trump Tower.

But the mood in the Trump camp shifted early after signs of a strong performance in Florida and Clinton supporters began contemplating the consequences of a result few thought was possible.

At a “victory party” for Clinton supporters, under the veil of a glass ceiling that was meant to be an epic symbol of a historic night when gender barriers were swept aside, there was bleak mood.

Thousands of people who filled the Jacob Javits convention center in midtown Manhattan – and the thousands more lining the blocks outside – had eyes glued to the TV. A woman clasped her hands over her mouth in disbelief as the newscasters announced Trump had won North Carolina.

The mood dropped markedly as results began to roll in: Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, all for Trump. Outside the Javits Center at the so-called “block party”, a couple embraced. The woman wiped a tear from her face and the man stroked her hair.
Another man, who identified himself only by his first name, Theo, called the results “scary and troubling”. “You don’t think there could be so much hate in this country – there is.”

After Podesta spoke, a stream of stunned supporters, some in block-colored pantsuits, others toting tired children, many wiping tears from their eyes, exited the building that was meant to be a symbol of barriers broken.

“What happened? What did we just do?” asked Gloria Lowell, the mother of an adopted son from Guatemala.

Staffers hugged each other and wiped tears from their eyes. They had prepared for this outcome – but no one truly believed it.

Susie Shannon traveled from California to be at the Javits Center on Tuesday night so that her eight-year-old daughter, Gracie, could say she was there when Hillary Clinton was elected president.

They left the center in the early hours of Wednesday morning stunned.

“We waited for hours to come here tonight,” she said in shock, holding her daughters hands. “I wish Clinton herself had come out and spoken to us. It would have been nice to hear from her.”

Meanwhile, the crowd at Trump’s watch party in the midtown Hilton grew increasingly excited as the evening went on. Loud cheers erupted every time that returns from Florida and Ohio were shown on the television screen. The mood grew increasingly optimistic as attendees huddled anxiously around their televisions clasping their drinks and their cellphones in equally tight grips.

Many shouted “lock her up” when Clinton’s name was mentioned and berated members of the media for being slow to report election results.

Exit polling by CNN suggested 88% of voters had made up their minds more than than week ago, before last minute FBI inquiries into Clinton’s emails temporarily raised fears of a late Trump surge.

Donald trump has promised to wipe out terrorism. ISIS is there, Al-Quaida, Al-shebab, Bako Haram. The record file that he will inherit from the Obama admin, implicating PFDJ as terrorist sponsoring regime and being hooked to a UN sanction will likely be strengthened by the Donald Trump Admin. Trump has strong opinion on Moslem and some thing may go wrong that will trigger US mass bombing including on the anti Huthi alliance. Donald Trump as individual has no political skills and with his white right wing attitude every immigrant has a reason to be concerned. But the mainstream Americans got fed up with traditional political culture and threw their vote to some one whose political skill is almost none. But PIA loves to see rough and cruel people clinch to the helm of Power and might be very happy for a mean time. from his words and tones Donald Trump looks tilted to the old attitude of the white supremacist ideas which could make him the worlds dangerous man with a nuclear Bomb button on his fingers. I personally am not feeling at ease, but, hopefully the old guard republican will come to his aid so that the impact of his blunder is kept minimal.

Brother you said that “…….with his white right wing attitude every immigrant has a reason to be concerned. “—In my opinion …. I don’t believe that an immigrant has a reason to be concerned…. Why ? America is a democratic country ,so like any country, the president will have a substantial influence ,but he is going to work within the borders of the Constitution.Bay the way America is the country of emigrants and nobody can claim that it belongs only to him or her ….Having said that, there are some problems created by the immigrants them selves …..That is instead of abide by the law, respect the host country’s culture they try hard to import their own culture ,and establish parallel societies……Typical example ,the Muslims try to establish Sharia and Sharia police men ..To some extent in some other communities also …..for example i have heard that “ኣብ ስያትል ዝነብሩ ኤርትራውያን ፣ኣብ መርዓ ቆርበት ዝናር ሴፍ ገይሮም ይድብሉ።”

I understand that teklay, but didn’t you see how George W. bush senior and George W. bush junior historic blunder that has caused hundreds of thousands of innocent women and children got massacred and still going on?the American constitution was there then but they are far more part of the American politicians establishment and the do understand the game of politics. This man insults people on stage point blank. Like the George W. bush senior and junior what he needs is a fabricated lie from the CIA. then this man does not know the game of politics and hence diplomacy and he is going to order for the firing of the US weapons of mass destruction. to bypass the constitution and deceive the public the CIA will be there with manufactured threat to America. But hopefully the republican old guards will be on his side to help him navigate his way! sorry to say, but I am feeling very much an ease and insecure. I hope things will turn for the better!

Teclay the confused try to tell us we should abandon our culture ,
First of all we should ignore his attempts to deviate the discussion for his
wicked agenda irrelevant from the subject in discussion .
How stupid remark is that to question Eritreans in Seattle to use sword while
dancing become unacceptable or illegal .
I wonder why he is adamant with issues that doesn’t concern him about Eritreans
to keep their heritage like every immigrant groups in USA .
We observed how racism , hatred and resentment effect humans healthy mind .
The white supremacists voices won to elect Trump and Teclay also share some
of their destructive agenda against Moslems . Thanks God he don’t belong to
Eritrean natives which is hard to swallow if he was one of us ,
Don’t blame me , his nonstop anti-Eritrean messages speak the volume .

        • Harestay November 9, 2016

What African or Eritrean culture, language and history of your own have you got??? The answer to all the three is NONE, NONE, NONE at all.
Except of course of Arabic culture, language and history. But the Arabs do
not see you or treat you as an Arab human being but an Arab dog & slave.
Get a real and meaningful life of your REAL own. It is not that late!!!!!!!!!

American presidency is cyclical like business,so is the mood of the voter, unlike other nationalities,Americans love ‘the new car smell’,they like to try something different, this time around they are giving the republicans a chance through their unique, unconventional nominee,Americans love to take a chance, how is that done? only one way, through the power of a vote, secret ballot, democracy! on the contrary,in the country of my birth place, they love to hold on to the old car,the stale smell, the leaky engine, the bald tires, faded rusty paint and toxic fumes bellowing from the exhaust pipe, because they don’t have the tools to change it.Selomon, there is nothing to be alarmed, feel at ease, the tools are in place here for someone not to make a decision singelehandedly,It ain’t adi halo,if it was,I would be reciting my last rites and reviewing my will.

    • k.tewolde November 9, 2016

continuation= it is not a rigged system after all, what will Mr.Trump have to say about that statement that he won now.The tenets of democracy are intact here, the people have spoken, this is the power that we need to take back in our homeland,it is a cause worth dying for.long live the U.S.A.- the beacon of democracy.

  • Z. Hagos November 9, 2016

We know that when Americans found that the two candidates to be the most hated, they made their quick decision to follow their morning inclination or feelings, i.e. to sway if needed. The Americans knew that either way was going to be a surprise, because a woman president was for the first time and such an open businessman that changes his tongue with the market flow (unprincipled) even against all establishments. So, the Americans sooner will put in play: ELECT, TRY, AND IF NECESSARY RECALL. For now, all have to congratulate the elected – awaiting test outcomes. This shows that constitution is not supposed to produce a rigid system.

A middle finger to Amanuel Iyasu

    • Concerned Eritrawi November 9, 2016

Why because he gave you the freedom to express yourself. I think you should put your middle finger in your behind.

      • Guest November 10, 2016

No, it is not my middle finger, silly. It is Trumps thumb (The one in the photo) way up your friend Amanuel’s behind.

    • AHMED SALEH !!! November 9, 2016

Who cares about Street boys behavior who act with same manners . Do you also
wear your pants low to expose your cracked butt and give your middle finger to
      cover your foolish attitude ,

        Hey guys, chill…

The low life rat Amanuel Eyassu, wrote something (In tigrigna) about us election and did his usual idiotic thing. Tried to link Eritreans with Trump or something equally idiotic. Trump won. People say the winning of Trump is like a middle finger at the US establishment.

Don’t you think shoving that same finger up your, low life & woyanies rat pal of yours Amanuel is actually a complement?

    Dear Assena
I want to thank you for the great service you are doing to us here
away from the country………Now I clearly can see those ” friends ”
of me who had been courting me hoping to use me to cross the
bridge………….I even have been able ( I wouldn’t tell you if it is by
TinQolla or scientific investigation – as all what matters is to find
the fact ) but all fell into the death of valley again.
Do you see them looking up to me again if I would come to their
    rescue.
I was right and knew it long time ago their political works, goals
    and means to achieve it.
All I would like to tell them is NICE TRY but YOU LOST !
    And here I am again………………winner !
And the most amazing thing about them is their attempt to stereotype
which ultimately works good for me………………I mean they think I do not
know while they are repeating, reading and repeating again the manual
I myself wrote and gave them to use it.
They bring back to me as if something new or I haven’t seen it before.
Their only last card and cover is the pen name only writing as guests etc…..
but even that will evaporate off when we come to see face to face looking
    into the eye.
congratulations all for our win again
and look forward to see eye to eye.
    yours
    AMAN BEYENE

If I tell you the identities, personality and the political game
of these groups now opposing Mr. Donald Trump you wouldn’t
believe it…………………..and it looks like this as follows…………………….
( I will return to it soon )
Yet they try to hide it at first, and when known and their secret
is out……..they first try to deny it……….and soon they take and adopt
the other side so quickly and try to act as victims.
That is the reason why, they are asking extension again and again
playing the waiting game until the situation works for them.
They have avoided it to face me face to face
since 2010 or before and chose only to stay
anonymouse until they rig and falsify texts
out of context or believing they more in number
    against one.

    NICE TRY AGAIN !!
Nothing wrong trying it but I was/am well ahead of your scheme
Do you wan’t to embarrass me or call me names for knowing ahead
of you and I didn’t fit into the group think / politics that the party had
been instilling through its medias ?
Or are you jeleous of the freedom and Grace GOD gave me to use it.
Or are you angry that I didn’t get tuned by your defunct media and
    misinformation ?
Or are you trying to execlude from sharing & eating the ” fruits ” of our
struggle which actually I would have more of the share ?
I am able to learn a lot about them from their utterances and their actions
and all are the works and psychology of a ” failed man ” ?
    Some phrases to remember………………
uttered by some of our leaders in the opposition.
    >
    1. ” Kab b’tsota zinehewet Mashela wey n euuf wey n wenchif………”
    2. ” Wala Wedi Hawobokha wun entokene aysegumelka……………….”
    3. ” You are right but we are fighting to keep you out of the table ”
    >
    4. ” My education is not right ……………..and I am only an Artist, a cowboy
or a jerk………………? Are you serious about what you say ?
Let me know if you are one what you say and stand behind his words
without waiting the coming Woyane elections to reward him/her for
    good behavior and loyalty. !
I mean before the expiry time of 12.25.2016
Just do not melt away and cut and run like “fearless” Awates..
    AMAN again !!!
    dil lesifiw Hizb !
    Awet N hafash !
    Enwet
    Wudqet N feshFash !!
Now back to those crying and protesting the win of Trump & the
    Republican party …………………..
    coming back soon

    And actually for your info.
    Let me say this unilaterally.
    >
    First
    Shalom ! Shalom !
    >
YES I SUPPORT HIGDEF AND THE PIA GOVERNMENT
THOUGH I CRITICIZE CERTAIN FEW ASPECTS OF IAs
    and HIGDEF past actions.
    >
But this is not only me. Almost any Eritrean resents the
Leaders of both political camps. Nevertheless ,
I believe that it is way better than any future or incoming
government that comes in the name of Eritrea and the
    Eritrean people in the land.
    >
I was wrong to unfairly harshly criticize it because now I know
that I was deliberately given and fed false information by the
so called Oppositions that I though they were struggling for
Eritrean independence, Sovereignity and THE Eritrean people.
while they are only struggling for ENDAS, and other sub-national
agendas under or to please Woyane. or create a different Eritrea
that has no resemblance to the former Eritrea.materialy or spiritually.
And it is true that I feel and am Ethiopian citizen and both Eritrean
and Ethiopian ID cards to prove it.
And I wouldn’t allow any regime or party to rebaptise me or would
indulge or get into my personal identity. Any party or regime /government
doesn’t have right or mandate to that as it stands so far. Only your Adi
has the sole right to ones citizenship.
    And many more coming soon
SO THAT YOU KNOW ! NOW WHAT Mr. GUESTS, ANONYMOUSES & SO & SOs.
    AMAN ! AMAN !
Issayas and Highdef are way better compared to the merciless and vicious
    opposition in reality.
And if I want I still have the right like any other to fill the TAESA WOREQET.

    SOME FEW ON THIS SITE
    WHO ARE POINTING FINGERS
    ON ME…….FOR EXPRESSING MY
    VIEWS AND OPINIONS.
    >
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THIS….
    >
Because I do not understand if your actions are from ignorance
or deliberately vicious when you do your aggression against my
personal and civil rights often with contempt.
And the irony is that while it is me the one who gave more and
better than most for his people and country, you dare and get
the nerve to do that shamefull trumpling.
But let me tell you this, it is a cowardice act often done to cover
other thing. You are just acting with pre-emption out of fear,
frustration and perceived threat that someone somebody out
there is saying something about you. It is loss of self confidence
and loss of identity or soul. You seem to be suffering from sense
    of guilt and shame.
I am compelled to say this to those few who are attacking me without
facts and have been trying to use me as scapegoat and still think they
will do so. They have been and still are in the business of interpreting
my opinions , beliefs and persona wrongly to suit their agendas and fears.
I am saying enough is enough……………..otherwise you know you will loose
    respect from me.
So just do it for yourself not for me.
They are wrongly thinking I am fearing their coward and naked acts.
    Good Night.
