Eritrea ‘continues support’ to Somalia’s Al-Shabab, says Ethiopia

By Tesfa-Alem Tekle – Sudan Tribune

July 29, 2013 (ADDIS ABABA) – In fresh allegations made by Ethiopia on Monday, the East African nation said that efforts to maintain peace and stability in Somalia is taking longer due to Eritrea’s continued support of the Islamist militia group, Al-Shabab.

The Ethiopian government said despite ongoing efforts by regional governments and the African Union peace keeping force (AMISOM), Eritrea continues to undermine peace efforts in war-ravaged Somalia.

“Although relative peace and security is gained in Somalia, Eritrea didn’t reduce its support to Al-Shabab and remains to be a destabilising influence”, Ethiopia’s foreign affairs spokesperson, Dina Mufti, told Sudan Tribune.

“Eritrea continues to violate UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and the country absolutely remains to be a regional security threat”, he added.

The Ethiopian government said it has its own, as well as international evidence to support its latest allegations against the secretive Red Sea nation.

Mufti said there was a need for tightened sanctions to cripple Eritrea’s negative role across the volatile East African region.

Eritrean envoy to the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa was on Monday unavailable for comment.

In 2009, the UNSC imposed sanctions against Eritrea for its role in financing, as well as providing arms and military training to the Al-Qaeda-linked group, Al-Shabab.

The sanctions also include an arms embargo, travel ban and assets freeze against the country’s senior political and military officials.

Asmara has repeatedly denied allegations of backing Al-Shabab, accusing the US and its regional ally Ethiopia of running “smear campaigns” aimed at tarnishing the country’s Image.

Eritrea has repeatedly demanded that sanctions be lifted, however, the UN monitoring group on Somalia and Eritrea – a panel which investigates violations of imposed sanctions, insists it is too early, arguing that Eritrea has shown little improvement.

Relations between Ethiopia and its former province remain tense after the two neighbours engaged in a 1998-2000 border war that killed an estimated 70,000 people.

TIMETABLE FOR PULL-OUT

Meanwhile, Mufti has dismissed unconfirmed reports that the Horn of Africa nation is planning to pull-out the thousands of troops it deployed in Somalia.

“There is no an immediate plan of withdrawing our troops from Somalia”, Mufti said

According to the Ethiopian official, troop pull-out depends on the pace of progress achieved in Somalia.

“Ethiopian forces will remain in Somalia until AU peacekeepers and particularly the Somali government forces build up military capability that would fully enable them to defend existing security threats in their soil,” he said.

He reiterated that Ethiopia will continue to extend all necessary support to the Somali government until such time durable peace and stability is achieved.

I do not really care. Even if the Ethio invaded Eritrea, I do not care. I gave up the opposition in protecting Eritrea from the tyranny. Issayas will still rule.

    • asama July 31, 2013

What are you trying to say? You don’t care even if Ethiopia invades Eritrea and Eritrea becomes part of Ethiopia?

      • Tamrat Tamrat July 31, 2013

Dont twist thing mr pig! Ethiopia has been in Somalia to make sure the disease shabia gets rid off. And by now you have learnt how much pigs distroyed in Somalia. As to Eritrea ask Your Abdu Ali who never kneels unless for praying where he is now after two or Three visits of Ethiopians. The ethiopians did not expect that he kneels to shoot, but expected that no pigs can mess With the Peace of EThiopians. And that was made sure. And now mr Abdu Ali is kneeling though this time not to Allah but to Western leaders to let him live in their land like the hundred thousand eritreans he forced them to leave their home land.

          Tamrat,

Who would deservedly has the title “Pig”?

Wouldn’t you say those for whose daily sustenance the song ” We Are The World” was sung in order for the rich people to give out of guilty consciousness?

Who would deservely has the title”Pig”?

Woudn’t you say those who are habitul pan-handlers in the international arena?

Who would deservedly has the title “Pig”?

Wouldn’t you say those who ,despite their quantity, invariably cry for the help of the super-powers, and even with that, lose the wars ?

Who was bluffing: Eritrea is our neck! Eritrea would never be sold! we will drawn the people into the sea etc.?

But when the Lions Of The Home of the Brave, turning all of the Soviet big guns into heaps of ashes, appeared on his door-steps, ran away to Zembabwe with his tail between his legs.

          Tamrat,

Need I go further? Please, do not force me to change into my high gears.

Keep up the pressure on the made dog DIA. What a ruthless leader he is.

  • Dawit Meconen July 31, 2013

Why is woyane crying wolf against Eritrea?

It is a divorced house syndrome. Eritrea is its nightmare. As we all know woyane is spineless that never stood on its feet in the past, nor will in the future. It was created as proxy of EPLFs’, and now, NATO’s.

When General Napier undertook an expedition to forcefully free the European prisoners whom King Tedros had held captives, he did not just get up and ventured all the way to Meqdela. No. He had to find local collaborators.

By the way, this was the modi-operandi colonialists employ, and now, neo-colonialists use, before they hopped into a country to suck its natural resources and enslave its people.

Whom did the General’s scounts find”

You guessed it right. It was Kasa, the great grand father of the woyanes. He led them straight to Meqdela, where he fought on the side of the Imperialist General. Yes, he committed National Treason, highest order of sacrilege, for just scant leftovers.

According to Dr. Ghelawdewos (Tigrawai), the following are the leftovers General Napier gave to Kasa as a compensation for his collaboration:

    1. 12 mortars

    2. 900 guns

    3. contless bullets.

Inadvertently affirming the fact that Kasa was a foot-soldier of British Imperialist, Dr. Gheladewos writes….” A year after he(kasa) bade good bye to Napier……….Kassa wrote the following letter to Queen Victoria:

“In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holly Spirit, message from Kassa: King of Kings of Ethiopia. Addressed to Queen Victoria of Britain….. Thank you for your advice and your love, I am strong. I am very delighted…………I have put the entire Ethiopian Government in my hands. Like our past friendship , don’t forget me; sympathise with me…” ”

Can you now see the parallel between Woyane and Kasa?

Kasa sold his very soul to British Imperialism to become King of Ethiopia, and woyane to the EPLFs.

King Kasa enslaved himselfin perpetuity to British Imperialism, and woyane, to NATO.

Why do they all stoop so low?

Because, as I said, they are spinless to stand on their feet.

Therefore, when woyane continuously lied to UNSC that Eritrea was helping Somalian extremists, it is because Eritrea is woyane’s nightmare. In a nut shell, it is utter lack of self-confidence and Inferiority Complex.

Kindey halewulem tibil eka? Ethiopia and Weyane have you and your boss by the neck. Prove me wrong, go get BADIME after doesn’t it belong to you.

DIA and his supporters cry on JUSTICE to be served over BADIME but when it comes to Eritrea and it’s people I guess JUSTICE has a different definition. FREE the Eritrea people so they can maximize their GOD given potential DIA.

    • Tewelde belay July 31, 2013

Go and ask them brother. Just do your own struggle instead of being irritated by Woyane or America.

      @Dawit,
“As we all know woyane is spineless that never stood on its feet in the past, nor will in the future. It was created as proxy of EPLFs’, and now, NATO’s”
If I take your account of Woyane’s history, Woyane is the smartest political entity in the world. If Woyane was a creature and dependent on EPLF and mange to keep its freedom to the extent defeat his creature and change other forces again to depend…higher level custodian.. this is not less than a miracle. If we extend this, Woyane is growing fast and it will be the rival of the next custadian i.e. the NATO. NATO is the strongest military and political alliance in the world. Thus, Woyane will be the next super power in the same way… created by the EPLF and became his rival. I am really eager to learn the explanation for this. poor Dawit, you are also telling us how Tigrians betray their country. no need to comment on that because Ethiopians know their history.

    • fetsum abraham August 1, 2013

      Dawit;
Please talk about Ethiopian government instead of weyane. the subject is about Ethiopian government’s allegation not about weyane’s. stop the weyane excuse to co9nfuse people.

There is no doubt that Issaias a very weak leader. He is not able to gain Badme. Weak leaders do not lead they are good in making mess. That is exactly what Issaias is doing. He knows that he can not face Ethiopians in Badme and hence he makes mess in Somalia. Poor guy.

This mad dog must go! He is good for nothing! He has tarnished my Eritrea into lawless nation. The ‘niHna niSu, nisu niHna’ must as well die with him. Eritrea belongs to Eritreans not to a guy from Tembien.

It appears like Ethiopia is frustrated by the closed door for dialod it has been trying to achieve with Eritrea. Eritrea has refused to dialog for peace but with all the surveilance going on by international forces on Eritrea in the pretext of the SANCTIOn, I do not think Afwerki has the capacity today to overcome all these and directly assist Alshabab. Therefore, Ethiopia must prove the allegation materially for us to consider: otherwise, I take this a political game to pressurize Eritrea for dialog.

    • Tamrat Tamrat July 31, 2013

Badme shall choose its own destination because they who suffered not the leaders of shabi or woyane. Badme is not a trophy. If there are any Badme People forced out of their home they are welcome to be included in the referundem. And this will continue all the way which includes ethnic Groups around the border. The Colonial period is over in the 1940s. You dont cout families land like a piece of cake. You do want that show us Your Colonial Power like italyans though they even have learnt that is not the way to make profit out of international Cooperation.

After all the mess Ethiopia should abide by Algeria agreement here is another missing appourtunety of peace. The majority of people of both side need to be solved this problem and want to live in peace as to interesting nieghbors. Bitting each other is not a solution. Other wise, we will live balming each other forever and the devil will like it to do another damage to both people. Lets kick first the dictator DIA and things will go well.

What do you expect from Ethiopia. I dont see the reason of publishing this kind of news.

  • ab ab July 31, 2013

I don’t understand the ethiopians care about somalian people and not about Eritreans. they have to go to Asmara and oust the dictator. it would take them 6 months to stay in there not unown time like in somalia.

  • Hzbi August 1, 2013

Keeping the two countries name, i think that Federalism has an advantage and it would serve the two countries a very good trade and development. We know Ethiopians paid high price inside Eritrean millions of Ethiopian troops dead inside Eritrea and Eritrea as well paid high price to get it back. However these two countries people have relate language and culture. Thus, Federalism isn’t bad, there are many countries in Federal, For example United States of America are federal with the whole big Canada, European Union is an example too. So seeing in these two small countries which shares historical and geographical, whilst their names are still kept i the same way, having Federalized governance is for the advancement of both countries. Federal is better than dictatorial. No one should die for a pieces of land, federal is a way of advancement of both people in trade and development.
