By Aaron Maasho

ADDIS ABABA, Jan 18 (Reuters) – Eritrea has rejected Ethiopia’s accusations that it trained and armed gunmen who attacked a group of foreign tourists in Ethiopia’s Afar region this week, its envoy to the African Union said on Wednesday.

German nationals were among five foreigners killed in the incident late on Monday, Western envoys said. Other tourists were receiving treatment for serious wounds sustained in the attack. One escaped unharmed.

An Ethiopian government official told Reuters on Tuesday that the assailants were members of a group “armed and trained” by the Eritrean government.

“This is pathetic, an absolute lie. Eritrea has nothing to do with any of these movements,” said Girma Asmerom, Eritrea’s envoy to the African Union.

Ethiopian officials say the victims were mostly European nationals, but have not given further details.

A German Foreign Ministry spokesman said Berlin was working with the German embassy in Addis Ababa to clarify exactly what had happened.

Afar is a barren and hot corner in the Horn of Africa country, and home to one of the earth’s harshest terrains.

The province’s rock-strewn hills give way to vast deserts below sea level, and dry river-beds and acacia thorn-trees dot the landscape. Banditry is widespread.

Foreigners who venture out into the area usually include researchers, aid workers and adventure tourists visiting geographical wonders like the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest places on earth with ancient salt mines and volcanoes.

A German media report said the group of tourists had been close to the Erta Ale volcano, one of Ethiopia’s most active.

Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a 1998-2000 border war that killed some 70,000 people, and the dispute still festers.

Addis Ababa routinely accuses Asmara of supporting Ethiopian separatist groups, and blamed an Afar rebel movement for the kidnapping of five Westerners in the region in 2007.

“It has become a trend for Ethiopia to fabricate sensational news against Eritrea whenever the summit is nearing,” Girma told Reuters.

The Eritrean envoy was referring to an earlier accusation that Asmara plotted to bomb targets and disrupt an African Union meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in January 2011. (Editing by Duncan Miriri/Maria Golovnina)

You cannot write proper English at all. Have you ever been to school.

It is obvious that the ill-minded president of yours train and arm people against Ethiopia. Even your tyrant does not deny this. He said it in many occasions.

Please do not post such misspelt and grammatically incorrect English on this website HGDEF MENDEF.

Eritrea will be free of this mad dog!!!

      Thank you

      Dawit Andom

      • danihagos@yahoo.com January 18, 2012

lol are you English teacher or wht

      • HGDF January 18, 2012

        Dawit Andom:
You are a funny guy. Why should you be so interested on how fluent some one is in English to judge his educational background? Are you an English language teacher? And why should someone be blamed for being an educated? And why should you make it a requirement for an Eritrean to be fluent in English to discuss the politics of his country? If you are educated, then you should have knowen writing or speaking English fluently doesn’t necessarily mean that someone is very educated. But I don’t think that you are well educated to know that, or it must be like they say “kab muhros Ye’Emro” or ” Muhur denkoro”

        • HGDF January 18, 2012

          *an educated = uneducated

      • revolution January 18, 2012

        well done!! he deserve it.

      • Zebib January 19, 2012

        Dawit Andom,

How I agree with you! There is nothing more offensive that to see a language as beautiful and as evolved as the English language “devastated” by one like tesfaldet who is just a mercenary and feels no shame in writing what he did!!!

    • Abnet Tesfai January 19, 2012

HELLO! HELLO!….. CAN YOU HEAR ME.
…. HGDEF AND WOYANE ARE TWO FACES OF ONE CENT VENDETTA ENEMIES OF THE ERITREAN PEOPLE……
both have the same history and the same type of crime on both peoples. they kidnapped the people’s freedom. they blame each other. they commit terrorist activities on their own people. the clique who attacked his own people accuses the other clique.
please don’t trust what they say…… they are doing everything what they thought it may help to keep them in power.

        Abnet Tesfai

I am a fan of yours. I enjoy reading your posts. But, I totally disagree with your assertion that “HGDEF AND WOYANE ARE TWO FACES OF ONE CENT …”. I believe it is a gross generaliztion and off-track.

        • Abnet Tesfai January 19, 2012

          dear Zebib
          kemey wielki!
it seems offtrack when we look at it by our soft mind. you know a cent, it has two faces they are opposite sides but they stand to make the cent to being.
likewise, HGIDEF and WOYANE are two enemies/ opposites, amusingly they advocate, seem or talk as if they are in favor of the eritrean people …. but they stand for his fatality and extinction.

          • Zebib January 20, 2012

            Ato/Wzo. Abnet,

‘soft mind’ I honestly don’t know what is meant by this in this or any other context. I suspect we have a generational gap. Soft and hard minds are not in my ‘antiquated’ vacabulary. Having said that, to equate two phenomenon such as HGDEF and ‘Woyane’, as one being the other side of a coin, sounds so gross and ‘simplistic’, volumes of complexities are buried and bull-dozed to give a sort of an emotional or sentimental assessment. I still maintain.

          • Abnet Tesfai January 20, 2012

            wozero/weizerit Zebib
            kemey hadirki
don’t worry about literal meaning of words, you have better understand someone’s idea from the context or sentences built as one word may have many different meaning at a time. in my case
soft mind= uncritical thinking or lack of discern.
i you are still uncomfortable with my limited English, i am so sorry and please forgive me for my weakness as English is my second language…
            thank you, have good day.

History is being made by a barely 15 years old teen named Shannon. Eritrea has probably become the first East African country to be represented at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. When the old generation is fighting against each other, the little boys and girls of Eritrean decent are making history for the nation of their parents. Instead of defacing this website with tabloid news, why not give it a break and post news that can unite us all and at least give us a short break to talk something positive about our nation? It is one of Eritrea’s proudest moment as a nation. A nation that had spent 30 years fighting to gain its stolen dignity from the barbaric Ethiopian dictators and a nation that is barely 20 years old since its independence is proudly represented among the giants of giants in the Winter Youth Olympic Games. It is time we stress and applause our commonalities than magnifying our differences. See the video at meskerem.net, and watch history being made.

    • GOOD MAN January 19, 2012

I agree with you history made by a good citizen. a citizen that never forgotten his beloved nation, even though, he didn’t grow in Eritrea. I would like you to imagine if this man was in Eritrea under the Iseyas regime of-course, he will never had this opportunity and because of the weather condition in Eritrea, it will be impossible to have skaters. I am very glad for him that he is enjoying his freedom in Canada and I wish one day the youth in Eritrea to have the same freedom.

  • tesfaldet January 18, 2012

yes history is being made .but remember Shonnon.did not have to go to sawa he grew up in a free country .and he did not trained in eritrea or by hgdef too

    • Abdi January 18, 2012

      • halengi sewra January 18, 2012

Abdi aleka dika ata kelbi! i do not realy care about shannnon THAT IS GOOD FOR HIM, but I DO CARE ABOUT ERITREANS, PURE ERITREAN. WHO WOULD GIVE HIS FLESH AND BLOOD FOR THE SAKE OF HIS LAND AND HIS PEOPLE. THAT`S MY OPINION. AND THIS DOESNT MEAN I AM JEALOUSY BECAUSE I DONT EVEN LIKE WINTER SEASON, LET ALONE PLAY WITH ITS SEED.

        • Mr. T January 18, 2012

          halengi sewara,

You are really funny. So what is holding you up from venturing into the Eritrean field (Sahel or Barka) and give your own flesh and blood for the sake of Eritrea? wey tera’e-ra’e. entati’e ekuwa kndzi natka dmzi aitgebrn bhawi ktqlo kela. Brother, please be realistic. Try to think and say things that only fit your size.

    • HGDF January 18, 2012

      Ghezai
      Hahaha
What about Daniel, Natnael, Zeresenay etc.. were they exempted from going to sawa?
HGDF didnt train him skiing. But HGDF and his parents gave him the best training a young man can get , And that is patriotism. That is the main thing you weyane agents forget when you try to undermine our national pride i.e Eritrea is a land of pariotism and real Eritreans are known for their patriotism where ever they go.

  • ghezai January 18, 2012

    Aabdi
you are nothing but hgdef shadow .you are low life layer .your opinion is un human.your words are trash. you are less than trash

  • Zeray January 18, 2012

The way this story was written, it needs further investigation and verification. However, PFDJ have been diplomatically failures and have historically lost credibility in the eyes of its own people (because they lied to them too much), and in the eyes of the world (because they don’t know how to be diplomats). Therefore, it does not surprise me if any bad deeds in the Horn of Africa gets blamed at them first simply because they are not coming with “clean hands”.

    • Abdi January 18, 2012

Wash your hands before talking about HGDEF,HGDEF are patriots and corrupt free who care about the people, and the people is with HGDEF,so i don’t know where you get that “the people don’t trust HGDEF”from.Eritreans believe and trust HGDEF and its policy.
click here to know who is corrupt and entrusted by his people don’t

      • GOOD MAN January 19, 2012

ABDI, by now everyone knows that you are from Tempen, and maybe Iseyas is your cousin,so what ever you say I honestly understand you. I’ve no reason to blame you at all. The only fear I have is when your master will be trashed away, what are you going to write about.

        • Abdi January 19, 2012

Keep dreaming of trashing PIA,do you even know that PIA is the whole Eritrean people?nsu nhna nhna nsu,
long live PIA and patriot Eritreans, death to weshalkh with their lords woyane!

          • sol January 19, 2012

            Andate
I know DIA is nation,he is people he is defense, he is Eritrea, I would have agreed with u had he been immortal. But I am laughing at your fallacy assumption that when Nesu dies , Eritrea and Eritrean people will die with him.
You are so smart Abdi, I would have regret for the rest if my life if you were not one of us. Ki ki

      • Zebib January 20, 2012

        Abdi

If I worshipped Hgdef and your adored ‘PIA’ the way you do in the net, I would, without any hesitation, go to Eritrea and live there together with the 4 million or so ‘prisoners’ and enjoy my adored ones from close range. I think you do all this because you may own a lousy house or some small shop and this for you represents an entire world and you would walk over dead bodies to defend it. You are by far the ‘littlest’ person I have ever known in the cyber world. Through what you write, you reveal the ugliest part of humans. I cringe with shame when I see your name appear with a post.
