Almost five (5) decades ago, one occupier following the other denied the existence of a country called Eritrea. The last one was Ethiopia, the only African country occupying another African country.

They told us we did not exists. They decided that Eritrea, as a country, should not exist and the Eritrean language never spoken. Anyone telling the contrary was evil. Anyone fighting our carved destiny by others was told to expect a call from the grim reaper. Against all these odds, came our Freedom Fighters. Some were farmers, some highly educated and all from the very best fabric of Eritrea. They told their people that Eritrea existed then and will be an independent country. It took thirty (30) years of fierce fighting and the pain can only be compared to the depth of our pride. Our country is a country our elderly fought for and following generations died for its’ independence. It is absurd to watch now it’s’ legitimacy being brought into account by the very enemy that killed, handicapped and created the “one of the largest group of refugees in the world”. For Ethiopia to become the auditing force of the price paid, the force in charge of “giving back” a portion of our borders and yet taking much more  is beyond any healthy mind’s comprehension. Not only the land is being tattered, but also the deep pride Eritrean are molded of is being challenged.

 The “peace dances, smiles and love  hugs” cannot be intended to be an excuse to take back – by a subtle game and trickery –  a land lawfully belonging to its’ people, that now we see be given “away” and be owned by “others”. It does no good to both parties dancing to a deaf tune now to brush these facts and hide them in a mass grave prepared in advance. The very agreement signed in Algiers is failing with the cardinal error that said agreement is being hatched and history re-written. This agreement is the starting point to withdraw troops and each nation turn their attention to their own country’s problems. The problem/trouble now seems that there are so many extensions and acceptances given as a bonus to Ethiopia.

As it displays now, Eritrean Veterans should unite. Our intellectuals should unite; our different political parties/beliefs should unite. So the leaders in this deed of total amnesia can be reminded that they are leaving the most powerful forces behind and that is the combined 106 million human beings that both legitimate countries – Eritrea and Ethiopia- shelter as their own population. Total amnesia seems the bug paralyzing politicians’ minds in this tornado that we, Eritreans, are trying to stop.

International recognition and legitimacy is dubious if people are ignored. In order for peace to have a chance, Ethiopia has to back-off from the wishes of Eritreans for Eritrea; and that means the six (6) million we are. And stop insulting our intelligence.

No bordering country with Eritrea can survive by pulling a curtain and assuming it will prevent the pungent smell of Eritrean corpses filtering from the Mediterranean Sea, or by lifting and clicking the crystal champagne flutes hoping it will cover up the screams of tormented Eritrean mothers watching on TV screens capsized boats and bodies of young Eritrean generations that will never come back.

 Some Eritrean and Ethiopians might say, “That was then”. However, the “then” canned into history and the iniquities surrounding, is the cause of the pain each Eritrean has made its’ own.  Ethiopia needs to own the inner scars and abdominal adhesion of open wounds and spluttering pus in each Eritrean’s mind and heart in order for peace to have a chance after years of war.  Peace comes from asking for forgiveness and not flattering the few in power. Eritreans will never forget, but Eritreans have this extraordinary power and capacity of forgiving if a cathartic truth precedes true reconciliation.

 Far from making Ethiopia the only force to “liberate” our minds and our hearts after decades of pain, the idea that the new administration in Ethiopia calls for “love” for “faith” for “unity” and the idea that Ethiopia is still the center of its’ own never kept and delivered promises to their own people, makes me wonder how suddenly it (Ethiopia) ought to be the preacher of all our (Eritrean’s) consciences. How can one become the teaching of “co-existence” based on exclusivity to a claim of legitimacy, without conceiving separation of sovereignty of countries? What Ethiopia is suggesting is pulling apart warring parties. This does not heal old wounds, let alone redress historical wrongs.

 Eritreans are resilient. Eritreans proved to the world around – and not only to the occupier- that they dared to believe and dared to achieve. If future generations of Eritrea – in my mind the highest educated generation to be in Africa – will decide for an economical federation with Ethiopia, it is not an idea far-fetched to consider. However, this cannot be achieved if justice for Eritrea has not been attained and restored. Some might decide to live in the “promise land of Ethiopia” and others dream about the life “of all that could have been” in Eritrea.  However, if  the Prime Minister of Ethiopia – Abyi Ahmed – sees a self-approach forthcoming, he cannot expect the PEOPLE of Eritrea to be so magnanimous and forgiving in return…just because of his smile!

The addition to this “make-believe” peace will be unending war and more suffering for the PEOPLE of both countries. It might be tempting for Prime Minster Abyi Ahmed to dismiss and ignore uncomfortable criticism. NOT evading that discomfort might lead to a final political correctness and protect the future of these neighboring countries at war for over a half century. Eritreans never denied Ethiopia the right to exist. At this time, political correctness from Ethiopia is needed for the good of Africa. It is a moral issue on their side to respect Eritrea’s right to exist. We are not asking for permission to exits, we need to unite and prompt our neighbor to the south to respect our unity when it comes to our land and our people.

 In closing, what is needed on our side?  Victory asks for unity. Let us unite so not to see our beloved Eritrea being munched like a cake many wants to slice.

 The strong belief to achieve peace in Eritrea and make our own country FREE AT LAST is first unity among our Veterans (ELF, EPLF, WARSAY).  Our Veterans brought back the right to exist for Eritrea. Now they can/should lead to unity and bring final peace in our land. Followed by unity among different “opposition” groups. Eritrean land and sea’s economic value seems to be chronically undervalued by Eritreans fighting each other. What is to be considered as a prime agenda is the long-term to prevent and to reverse the degradation of our society, of our economy let alone our hard-earned history. The leading political parties abroad should unite and then apply a sustainable management of our own politics. To facilitate change requires adaptation of legal, social and policy-focused contexts that will provide answers to our questions and become a source of productivity.

ALL Eritreans deserve the right to peace and to feel their land beneath their feet.

    Brothers Simon and meretse Medemer for peace and reconcilation among societies inside
    Ethiopia and neighboring countries might have different meaning . It is up to our intake on this subject .
    For the last twenty years Eritreans
    were victims of no war no peace policy while the do nothing actors inside opposition parties failed our
    expectation . Nowadays we noticed
    young , energetic and highly educated leadership in Ethiopia and
    my hope is to inspire Eritrean youth
    in Eritrea .
    Incase of Mahmud Saleh double standard to defend EPLF legacy ,
    he is not the first or the last person .
    And to speak about Issaias reign who dictated our people lives as his property , nobody except Eritreans blind support take the blame .
    Either way to wish for reflection of
    Ethiopian political reform on our land gave me hope because right now I
    am jealous to see Ethiopians free from oppressive regime and to give
    confidence for those in diaspora .

        the way I INTERPRET the word MEDEMER is on love , peace and reconciliation
        among societies either be in Ethiopia , Eritrea , Somalia , Sudan and others .
        So far hatred brought the region into undesirable situations But when it comes on national politics , I agree that Ethiopian P.M. is working for his country interest and he knows well the price of NO WAR NO PEACE policy which cost big portion of government’s annual budget .
        Since I didn’t hear words of ANDNET from ETHIOPIAN government except for
        mutual relationship with ERITREA , I do not have objection .
        The problem lies at our people weakness to surrender on authority by any means
        necessary while their brothers and sister became the forgotten soul ,
        Any way , take my word , we will see some movement for change inside our
        country including inside TIGRAI province , After we get rid HGDF for our
        common good and innocent prisoners have released , then we can say
        tedemirna for bright future .
        incase Eritrean sovereignty , it is done deal nobody can overturn facts .

    Dear, sister I think this is your second thread to read [Patriotism and the then the land is our land, now]. They are both very sensitive pieces that ask for a fair knowledge and aware of baksheesh. Thus, the intrinsic content of these descriptions need to think twice or even thrice before you address to the public because their bone of contentions are so detestable. Any way my personal assumption on these threads are as followed.
    .
    Good judgment will only develop if you/we truly learn from our previous mistakes. Its not easy but I think like habits, one can learn through repetition to think before he/she act. One may want to have a partner who keeps them on track or monitors them while they are practicing thinking before acting. I understand unfortunately, for many of us, it takes a few repeats of the same mistake to learn the lesson.

    Sure, as humans it’s easy and sometimes obvious to react quickly to an unpleasant situation. And that why often we think that the quicker we respond, the easier it will be to rebound or the faster the problem will be resolved. However, that is almost never true. Personal, I’ve alwoys found that when I sit for a minute and think about my next move, rather than acting too quickly on the first impulse that comes to mind, then, if was not in all but in most I’m able to figure out a better plan. So we/you need to better. You/we need to learn from our past mistakes so that we do not run the risk of repeating them. We also need to develop the wisdom and sense to make good decisions and choices.

    Any how, I am not trying to be contrarian you here. But, I read your pieces I found myself challenging, and then thinking to myself that the challenge may actually hold the key to the answer. For the case of demonstration, for instance, let’s take a situation where two persons did a same mistake. First person is the one whom you admire a lot and Second person is the one whom you hate and disrespect. How will you react to each of them? Will you give them equal punishment? Will you ? That’s what the point is..!!

    This is because you are treating someone with huge respect and love and that is all about how you feel about them differently. the feeling you have about them reflects in your actions. But you need to comprehend that each person or citizen of the land of braves has/have their own identity and their own self-respect. Every one is a patriot and the the land is his land. Thus, everyone wants to be treated properly as we expect others to do so. Hence, understanding this fact; you need to give enough respect for other side too. Because:

    You always need be aware of your surroundings positive or negative, because once you say something you can not really take it back coz. If one step taken wrong may destroy the whole. You need to give every citizen their own respect and automatically treat people in a better way, even if he/she/they think your enemy too. Moreover, if you treat them properly, they will definitely treat you well in return

    In conclusion, regardless of how inconsiderable; the problem with their introspective approachs are that the driving forces behind your biases. The root causes of your irrationality are largely unconsciousness that deeply remain invisible to genunely-analysis and impermeable to your intelligence. Interestingly, introspection is actually compound the error, blinding you to those primal processes responsible for many of your understands.
    I comprehend we define things. That’s one of the ways our brains work. I’m not a linguist however we do communicate with. If someone calls themselves a Democratic, Justice seeker, DELEYTI LEWTI and so on it tells me a lot about them, what they’re likely to think about a slew of issues, where their political loyalties lie, who they supported in the last past and now, what they think about ; it’s basically shorthand.Some people may argue that this shorthand can be misleading and that is true.

    However given the shortness of our attention spans, we will always be attracted to and instinctively gravitate towards, non rational, coded thinking. And given our bloodthirstiness as a species, we will always find safety in numbers and look for like minded thinkers. As hunters or hunted, we don’t have the time for extended ratiocination or logic. We act on instinct.

    So, I know that people who call themselves Democratic are not. Their ultimate goals are antithetical in many cases; they bear a dangerous similarity to people who historically created and maintained murderous leaderships; the people and govement they seek to emulate and are loyal to are my mortal enemies.
    Finally as a supporter of free -independent country and paid for social programs progresses, I guess I am one form of democrats in lower case, but these calling themselves Justice what so even seekers even they are not daring enough to disclose their names are malicious and danger to our country.

    ብመጀመርያ ተባረኽ እናሓደርካ ተሓጎስ ነቲ ኣዎንታውን ምዕቡልን ኣመላልሳኻ ። እቲ ኣባኻ ዘሎ ሕሰምን ህዝባዊ ጓህን ኣባይ እውን ኣሎ።ሓደ ፍልልይና ንስኻ መፍትሒ ኢልካ ትኣምነሉ እምነት ኣለካ ፣ ኣነ ግን ዘዊረ ርእየዮስ ኩሉ እቲ ንገዛና ከጽሪ ዝተዳለወ መወልወሊ ገለን ብቕርሕንቲ በረኸኛታት ተሓኤ ነበር ፣ ገለን ብሕማም ኣውራጃ ክሳዕ ኣፍንጭኡ ዝተላዕጠጠ (ደለይቲ ፍትሒ) ፣እቲ ዝተረፈ ድማ ጥፉእ እንታይ ዓይነት ለውጢ ከም ዝደሊ ዘይፈልጥ ብስምዒት ሰላም ማና ካብ ገለ ክወርደሉ ዝጽበ። እዞም ኩሎም ግን ሓንቲ ነገር ናይ ሓባር ኣላቶም ። ንሱ ኽኣ ፣ እታ ብራቢጣ ኢስላሚያ መምርሕን ኣጀንዳን ዝተመስረተት ጂሃዳዊት ጀብሃን እታ ብንጉሳውን ሲኣይኤን ተልእኾ ተበጊሳ ድሓር ንህዝብናን ሃይማኖቱን ባህሉን ንቡር መነባብርኡን ከተዕኑ ዝተበገሰት ኣረሜናዊት ሻዕብያን መድሕን ህዝብና ከም ዝኾና ጽኑዕ እምነት ኣለዎም። ኣነ ይሁዳዊ ኾይነስ ከመይ ጌረ እየ ወተሃደራት (ተጋደልቲ) ናዚ ጀርመኒ እናመጎስኩ እስራኤላዊ መፍትሒ ከናዲ??? እወ ናዚ ጸረ ኣይሁድ ኔሮም ፣እቶም ተራ ተዋጋእቲ ናይ ሻዕብያን ጀብሃን ግን ንህዝብና ከነጥፍእ ኢሎም በረኻ ኣይወጹን ፦ግን ጀብሃ ጂሃዳውን ዓረባውን ዝኣጀንድኡ መሪሕነት እንድሕር ኔርዋ ናይ ሻዕብያ ጸረ ህዝቢ ገበናት ምዝርዛር ኣየድልን, ንነብሮ ኣለና! እቲ ፍልልይ መጠን ገበንን ሃቐን(intention) ናይቶም በረኸኛታት ኤርትራ ነጻነት ብምንባሩ እዩ ።ግን እቲ ዝገበርዎን ክግበር ከሎ ጠጠው ኢሎም ዝርኣይዎን መግብር ነጻነት ድዩ ኔሩ ወይሲ ባርነት ፧ ሸፋቱ ስለ ዝበልክ ዎም ከም ጸርፊ ጌርካ ወሲድካዮ ንህበይ ህበይ እንተበልካያ እኮ ጸርፊ ኣይኮነን ። እቲ ሃቐኖምን ድሌቶምን እኳ ገርሂ እንተነበረ ተግባሮም ግን እኮ ነደ ኣሕዚንዋ ነቦ ኣሕኒኽዎ። ሓደ ሰብ ደቁን ሓዳሩን ክሕግዝ ኢሉ ሚልዮኔር ክኸውን እየ ኢሉ ንግዲ ይኸፍት ፣ግን ነቲ ገንዘቡ ናብ ኣመንዝራታት እናጥፍኤ እናሰኸረ ሰብ ቀቲሉ ገንዘቡ ናብ ካሕሳ ከይዱ ነብሱን ስድርኡን ለመንቲ እንተኾኑ ነቲ ሃቂኑ ዝውጾ ዲና ንርኢ ወይሲ ነቲ ናብ ልማኖ ዘምርሖ ተግባራቱ፣ተመሊሱኸ ንብዓልቲ ቤቱን ደቁን ምእንታኹም ክብል እኮ እየ ከምዚ ኴንና ዘለና ኢሉ ከም ውፉይ ተጋዳላይ ኮይኑ ክቐርብ እቶም ቤተሰቡ ወይ ዕቡድ ዝስዓሞም ወይ ናይ ኣእምሮ ሽግር ዘለዎም ክኾኑ ኣለዎም።ነቲ በተ ሰብ እቲኸ ለማኒ ቤተሰብ እንተበልካዮ ጸርፊዶ ይቝጸር ፧ ንሱ እኮ ሚልዮኔር ኮይኑ ስድርኡ ከሄብትም እዩ ወጺኡ ኢሎም ዝካራኸሩኻ ደለይቲ ፍትሒኸ ኣይገርሙኻንዶ ፧፧፧

    እወ ጃንሆይ ነቲ ፌዴረሽን ብዕሽነትን ዘውዳዊ ትምክሕትን ኣፍሪስዎ፣ነቶም ሕቡናት ማሕበር ኣንድነት ብዝበለጸ ኣጕህይዎምን ጠሊምዎምን።ቅድሚኡ ዝነበረ ምኒሊክ ብኸቢባውን ቀቢላውን ፖለቲካ ተላዒሉ ንትግራይ ኮነ ኢሉ ናብ ክልተ ኸፊልዋ እታ ሓንቲ ንሓርገጽ ፋሽሽቲ ሂብዋ ናይ ባዕላ መንነት ምሂዙላ ፣ በዚ ተበጊሱ እቲ ገድሊ ነዚ ከፍርስን ምስ ተጋሩ ወለድና ዝዝምድናና ከዐርን ኣምሓራ ትምክሕቲ ክድምስ ስ እንተ ዝብገስ ከምዚ እንቅስቃሰ ኣግኣዝያን (ጸገመይ ምስ ኣግኣዝያን ነስላም ኣሕዋትና እናቋናበጸ ብሕልፊ እቶም መዋድብትናን ኣሕዋትናን ዝኾኑ ሳሆ እናግለለ ዝጭድር ዕቡድ መትዓረቕስ ዱላ የቐብል ዝዓይነትዩ መፍትሒ ስለ ዘለዎ) ከምቲ ኣቦና ወልደኣብ ወልደማርያምን ኣቦና ራእሲ ተሰማ ዣቀንዎ እንተዝኸውን ምተሓወስክ ዎ፣ ጂሃዳዊት ጀብሃን ኣረሜናዊት ሻዕብያን እቶም ተቓወምቲ ዝብሃሉ ደለይቲ ፍትሒ እውን ቀዳማይ ጸላእቶም ዓጋመ ምዃኖም ናይ ኣደባባይ ምስጢር እዩ።ኣንዊሐ ኣዳናጊረካ ከይከውን እምበር እቲ ኣነ ንባዕለይ ብዓቕሊ ጽበት ወላዲት ሃገርና ኢትዮጵያ ዝብሎ ኣብ ዝዓበየ ሓደጋ ዘላ ሚኒሊካዊ ትምክሕቲ ኣምሓሩን ምግንጻል ኣጀንዳ ኦሮሞን ዘንጻላልዋ ዘሎ ርእሳ ካብ መቐመጭኣ ዘይትፈሊ ሃገር እያ ።ግን ንዓና ንኤርትራውያን ደቃ ሕያወይትን ሓብሓቢትን ኔራ ።ጣልያን ክሳዕ ንስኹም እኮ ከምዞም ዓጋመ ኣይኮንኩምን ፍሉያት ፍጡር ኢኹም ዝበለና ኣካል ኣኽሱማዊትን ኣቢስያናዊትን ቤተሰብ ኢና ኔርና ።
    ስለዚ ንረሳሕ ገዛ ከተጽርዮ ጽሩይ መወልወሊ የድልየካ እምበር ነዚ ዘሎ ረሳሕ ወልዋሊ ጥራይ ንቐይሮ ኢልካ ዝመጽእ መፍትሒ የለን። እዚ እዩ ዓበድበድ ዘብለኒ ።ኣነ ኣብ ወጻኢ ኣለኹ እቶም ዝተረፉ ናይ ቀረባ ቤተሰበይ እውን ወጻኢ ኣለዉ ፣ሓንቲ ተሪፋ ዘላ ድሙና እያ ንሳ ድማ ሳዋ ኣይከይድን ኢላ ስለ ዝተሓብኤት እዩ፣ ንምንታይ ሳዋ ዘይትኸዲ እንተበልናያ “ወይ ንስኻትኩም ሻዕብያ ድሙን ድሙ ድሙን ኣይገድፉን እዮም” ኢላ ስለ ዝኣበየት እያ እምበር ሓደ ካብቶም ኣብ Disneyland ታክሲ ዝዝውሩ ዳማሙ ተመርዕዩ ከምጽኣ ተማባጺዑ ኣሎ።

      Sure, you may offer constructive input when you feel it can help someone, but you don’t take judgmental shots at people, looking for some perverted form of self-aggrandizement.
      When you’re living on purpose, you don’t give two shit’s and a nickel about what other people say or do. In fact, you wanna see them’ succeed. You tend to notice their good qualities and wanna tell them about it. You get juiced by lifting others up, not putting them down.

      When you catch yourself criticizing others, look for what it is about them that’s causing you to want to criticize them. Own it. Like the saying goes, when you point the finger at someone, you’ve got three fingers pointing back at yourself
      .
      So that, what others think and say is their business. What I think and say is my business. Hater gonna hate. If I am doing something I love and believe in, my is the only opinion that matters. But I give some consideratio to others too. I have to laugh when I see people taking time out to actively criticize others

    A friend of mine called me after he read this short poem that he could not get any juice out of it. He asked me if I could separate the honey fromwax. I am sorry for the confusion. In short, I will be more than happy to make myself clear:
    ሳዕሪ ታሓግ – ኣርብዓ ዝርእሳ
    ናብ እግሪ ይልወጥ – ናይ ሰዓት መልሓሳ
    ኣብ ደረት ትበቁል – ዘይቀንዕ ክሳዳ
    ኣብ ክንዲ ዝባናስ – ኣብ ከርሳ መንጉዳ
    ኣብ ጓጉኣ ዕፈል – ቀርቂራ ኣስፊራ
    ዝተሓፍረት ይመስላ – ማዕጺድ እንተሰገራ
