Eritrean Activists to Protest Isaias Afwerki in New York

September 21, 2011 – Eritrean Youth Solidarity for Change (EYSC), a world-wide network of pro-democracy Eritreans, today announced that it will join several advocacy groups to denounce Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki during his New York visit to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Plans are underway for protest demonstrations to be held at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza on Monday September 26, 2011 starting at 10:00 AM.

Known for his brutality and his totalitarian system that has rendered the young nation of Eritrea into Africa’s North Korea, Afwerki is also known for causing instability and havoc in the Horn of Africa by supporting Al-Qaeda linked extremists in the region. After repeated warning, the United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution in December 2009 (Resolution 1907) to sanction the regime, which for all intents and purposes remains the same to this day.

In April 2010, President Barack Obama issued Executive Order 13536, in which Eritrea’s top presidential advisor Yemane Ghebreab was among those who were sanctioned for financing terrorism. Yemane Ghebreab is also the founder of YPFDJ, a radical group which espouses anti-democracy and anti-American sentiments in Europe and the United States.

In Eritrea, Afwerki rules without constitution, parliament and rule of law. The private press has been banned since 2001; and tens of thousands of citizens remain in secret prisons under extremely harsh conditions for simply exercising their right to speak or worship. Hundreds of thousands of the country’s youth have also fled the country to escape extended period of forced labor without pay.

EYSC and their fellow Eritrean-Americans find it particularly disturbing that the dictator is planning to hold a meeting for his radicalized disciples in New York City on Sunday, September 25th. Given his heinous track record and his absolute stance against freedom of expression, lack of respect for human rights and his overt support of terrorist elements, we believe Isaias Afwerki’s presence in this great city is unwelcome. As we somberly remember the victims of September 11 or 9/11, it is particularly offensive for New York to play host to a despot who trounces liberty and freedom. New Yorkers should treat this tyrant exactly as they treated Ahmadinejad of Iran and Gadhafi of Libya with whom Isaias Afwerki is a close friend.

To add insult to an injury, Isaias Afwerki has also asked to meet with President Obama. EYSC believes that the United States should continue to isolate this brutal dictator and should not reward his despicable behavior, which is duly documented by the US State Department, the UN Monitoring Group and Human Rights Watch.

You call people radicals ? What us your objective

    • Asme Gebre September 25, 2011

YPFDJ are indeed a radical group. As part of PFDJ party, its members spread untie democracy and untie western propaganda formulated by PFDJ, the ruling party in Eritrea. It also a PFDJ branch that is working viciously to suppress opposition groups from growing among Eritrean communities in diaspora.

I urge the assenna media foundation to be very independent the way the news is released, even if it is against its supporters, as long as it is truth and fair. Assenna’s credibilty can be endangered if it attempts to defend few groups at the expense of truth.
I have strong reservation on the news regarding the land mine explosion around the town of Senafe this week. The armed Eritrean opposition had several times before claimed to have “blown up EDF trucks, pick ups …. killed EDF cadres and personnel …”. This was the same miserably failed attempt of the so called Ethiopian-based “fighters”.
They have to take full responsiblity when it goes wrong as they try to take responsiblity, when they think, they are “right”.
Otherwise, they are another bunch of hypocrites and liars not different from Hgdef.
Ethiopia is the biggest loser here because they did their best to convince Eritreans how much they care about the Eritrean people and spent lots of money and time to host a conference but it was blown away with the blown Senafe bus.
The Senafe bus and the death of ten Eritreans and the 25 innocent Eritreans is another diplomatic disaster to the opposition.

      Fethi:
I believe you are employing HGDF tactics to create suspicion to further your political objective. The tyrant has been using such types of twisted out dated propagandas to continue enslaving our people. The quest of the time is to remove by any means necessary the very despot that considers our people as its subject and our country as its personal property. I am glad we have found a voice (Assena) so that Eritreans – regardless of creed, language or political differences – can understand the nature of the enemy and stand in unity to remove it by using available means.
Over time, our people have been in semi servitude under the yoke of brutal tyrant. The nation our fathers and mothers died for has turned into a prison in which its youths die trying to abandon. We know for sure HGDF has been systematically killing our people by directly assassinating people with differing political views, imprisoning our leaders for years with out due process, confounding the youths for over ten years in the trench, and plunging our people into adventitious wars with all neighboring countries including Yemen.
Yes, it is with deep sadness we heard the death of innocent Eritreans in Senafe; and from knowing the cruel nature of the tyrant, it is obvious it is capable of committing such gruesome acts to promote its purpose. For this reason, what has happened and waiting to happen is the direct responsibility of the tyrant and HGDF alone.
I beam in pride to once again able to witness the making of history by our people. Yes, we will do what is needed to remove this barbaric cult not only from power but also from our history. Our tens of thousands martyrs did not die to crown the tyrant. Hence, selfless Eritreans acknowledge the democratic and patriotic stances of Eritreans – including by ASSENA and other progressive forces – for being the voice of the voiceless in the quest to create a DEMOCRATIC, INCLUSIVE JUST ERITREA.

      • abdi September 26, 2011

He was in their position before he elected as a leader, and its not logical that all ppl to serve in the front line, obama has been credited for killing bn ladin while he was in comfort of his house, and that’s how it works.

Our leader Isaias Afewerki is our source of strength, unity, the voice, the parental figure, the brother and warrior in trenches. He is the guide that points Eritrea in the right direction. He led the mother in a distant field toward the water that can quench the thirst of child. He is a farmer; member of huge farmland called Eritrea; and he is roaming throughout the entire country greening the land wherever he goes. He is the teacher that believes all the kids must have the same opportunities to learn not to get out of poverty as the main objective but to thrive in life and in the process; lift the nation to the highest of standards. He is the friend of the doctor that saw a nation’s health as a national imperative and built medical facilities throughout Eritrea. He is a man that knows military strategy, intelligence, security and geopolitics. He is the man that co-founded one of the strongest armies in the world and created a national service program to ensure perpetuity. This article is taken from a Wonderful writer Amanuel Biedemariam AweNihafash

      Hagos,

That sounds almost like a prayer. I can’t believe you people would bend over for Isaias till he gets enough of your pathetic self. What a pity!!!

    • Xanadu September 25, 2011

      Hagos:

As they say if you got it, smoke it and i think that is what you are doing in your infantile mind.

Did you say that ” He is a man that knows military strategy, intelligence, security and geopolitics.” Did he not just ask the UN to remove Ethiopia from Eritrean land??? Or is this it me who is smoking??

Did you say that “He is the teacher that believes all the kids must have the same opportunities to learn not to get out of poverty as the main objective but to thrive in life and in the process”??? I have no idea what the hell that means but the idea to teach kids not to get out of poverty is one that has not been heard of in the history of humanity. No really did you real mean to say that??

Anyways it does not appear that the kids are listening as they are either flocking to Sudan, Libya and Ethiopia by the drove. It is kind of funny that Ethiopia is offering them as shot a higher education but most of them are not even able to pass the entrance exam. Some teacher you got but at least your vocabulary seems to be in par.

It is mind boggling how how cheer for injustice specially against your own blood?? Simply amazing and tragic.

i do not agree with your point of view, but you have every right to write your opinion in this wonderful Hope of Democracy ASSENNA. Imagine, if some member of the opposition try to post his or her opinion in one of the Pro-Government sites. yes, you know it, it will never be posted

  • Temesgen Medhanie September 25, 2011

The high priestess of PFDJ Sofia Tesfamariam just posted a directive to the attendees (read PFDJ thugs and zombies) where they are not allowed to bring any electronic device including cell phones, video and still cameras as well. It is just incredible. The bizarre directive is probably meant to conceal Isaias’ embarrassing comments from coming out to the fore. If the good for nothing thugs and zombies are so much proud of their abuser, why wouldn’t they allow for their president to be photographed or video taped as he makes s’dinet zereba?

    • Weldit September 25, 2011

I am quiet sure this is Her Majesty’s idea, and guess what, she has the ears of the PFDJ.
When it comes to supressing information, PIA himself is no match to Sophie.
Ideally, they should have allowed Assena & other opposition websites to participate and they should have streamed the meeting for Eritreans all over the world to follow it live!

    • Xanadu September 25, 2011

It is not only that but the time and the venue of the meetin was not posted until 18:08 PM EST so that protester are not allowed to get a permit from the city of New York.

Temesgen I am not against PFDJ so long as they remove “for Democracy and Justice” from their logo. What do you say??

  • Tess September 25, 2011

I heard when our three so called doctors talking about Eritrea that was shameful when one of them said Ethiopa is in devolepment not war. • Temesgen Medhanie September 25, 2011

    Amanuel Eyasu,

Sure enough, your site looks much better and tidier than before but the posting of messages seems to be crappy to say the least. in your previous website, the turn out was huge but now it seems to be stagnant where it frustrates some of us as we intend to exchange ideas and rebut PFDJ’s propaganda. Hope you will fix it. Thanks.

For those who do not know Mohammed Kier, he was instrumental in the expulsion of 35 University Professors labeled as incompetent. However latter on it was very clear that if there was incompetent and greedy person he was Mohammed Kier. He is very opportunistic and can do the unthinkable to get to power. Unfortunatlly he was one of the people who played a big role in the destruction of University of Asmara.

    • Senait September 25, 2011

      Gedem,

I think this is a cheap shot at Mohammed Kier. Even, if he was instrumental in the explusion of the professors for alleged incompetence that would not make him incompetent and greedy person. Your current judgement of him is purely emotional and politically motived. You have not provided a shred of evidence to prove your assertion.

  • Temesgen Medhanie September 25, 2011

Is it me or people are not posting comments as much?

    • abdi September 25, 2011

i think ppl got a clear view that the w.site is serving woyales agenda more than it does for Eritrea and Eritreans, so they opted not to be woyales tools against their own ppl, a wise decision, isn’t it?
