Eritrean community stunned by slaying

A 34-year-old woman's death late Monday night has left members of Winnipeg's Eritrean community stunned. Emergency officials rushed to a suite at Palmer House, at 372 Assiniboine Ave., at about 10:10 p.m., Monday after an assault

A 34-year-old woman’s death late Monday night has left members of Winnipeg’s Eritrean community stunned.

Emergency officials rushed to a suite at Palmer House, at 372 Assiniboine Ave., at about 10:10 p.m., Monday after an assault was reported. The woman was taken by ambulance in critical condition and was declared dead at the hospital.

Police said she died because of severe upper-body injuries. Her death is the city’s first homicide of the year.

No arrests had been announced Tuesday by police, but officers had taken a man into custody Monday night.

People who knew the victim identified her as Alche Kidane.

“I was just shocked when I heard,” said Ghirmay Yeibio, president of Community of Eritrean Canadians in Manitoba, who sponsored Kidane and her husband through Welcome Place.

“When an immigrant comes to Canada and a death like this, it’s so tragic, it’s a disaster, it’s a big tragedy.”

Kidane arrived in Winnipeg in August 2011, after she and her husband made their way from Khartoum, Sudan.

The couple moved into a suite at the Assiniboine Avenue apartment after their arrival in Canada.

She was sponsored by a cousin who had begun the process in 2008.

Lambros Kyriakakos, president of Eritrean Community In Winnipeg Inc., said members of the community came together to mark the woman’s death. Tuesday night, people crowded into the centre at Hargrave Street and Ellice Avenue to offer support to the victim’s family members.

“Something very tragic has happened,” Kyriakakos said earlier Tuesday. “We’re trying to support the victim and her family.”

A family member of the woman declined comment Tuesday night, but said the family wants Kidane’s body sent back home to Eritrea.

A neighbour in Palmer House said police officers were sitting in the hall outside a suite on the third floor Tuesday afternoon.

“Homicide is currently interviewing several witnesses, several people that live in that area to determine why this would occur, if the person resided at that location,” said Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jeffrey Norman.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

He did not do nothing. Eritreans chose him to sit as a president. no one forced him or no one ordered him or he did not chose to be in that position. And who knows he might have Eritrean blood as most of Eritreans, except the low lands, who has blood of ethiopians… If you do not like him, vote him out!!!!!

        John ,
As much as I find Mr. Kiriakakos as a smelly vomit ,it is narrow minded ,equivalent to that of PFDJ,l to judge him because ,only one side is Eritrean. This man is Eritrean 10% or 100% does not matter .We can not even define our own identity correctly. Please ,let us not give or take away someones identity. Former Ethiopian first lady ,under EPRDF rule was German. If she has Ethiopian identity/citzenship ,not only could be treated as an average Ethiopian ,but rather as Ethiopian first lady. Then late the DEQI ARBA´A GO TO TIGRAY,DIMBEZAN TO GONDER ,TSEN´A DIGLE TO DJIBOUTI & THE BLEN TO GOJAM.How far do we go to erase someones identity.WELL DONE JOHN !!!

No one has grown from the ground like a tree. Every one has come from some place before settling in the land called Eritrea. And no people is compossed of identical individuals like clones. We have differences as other people all over the world have. But we shouldn’t use our difference as a source of conflict like people in Dessie/Ethiopia who burn the church and mosques and like people of Axum deny the muslims the right to build a mosque not to name the ethnic killings in Gambella.

SINGAPO-ERITREAN, you know why I am directing this comment to you.

It’s probably too early to judge before knowing the full story but why didn’t she report him to the police if he was constantly assaulting her?

I have listened to you entirely interview who has conducted with radio Waghta and it is shame to hear this kind of comment from a person who call himself Asmara University Graduate and experience journalist. You said that Ali Abdu believe Jeberti is Beher and he have Islamic feeling. The way you conduct your interview that you left Eritrea for simple reasons. 1 you have person problem with Ali abdu because Ali Abdu is a Muslim and believe he want to be called Jeberti and believe Jeberti is Behre .What is wrong with that? Ali is a human being and have feeling about his ethnicity and want to be called as jeberti rather than Tigrinya Beher which is the Christian Eritrean been given Tigrinya Beher by Isyas Aferwarki in 1975 or in Nakfa . To be honest there is not such Tigrinya Beher by history but this Tigrinya Berhre has been introduced to you or to Eritrean Christian in 1975. But you want to deny the right and steal the history of Jeberti people and want to justify your hater of Ali Abdu because he believe that Jeberti as Beher . I have listened Ali interview and read his articles and he is a one of the smartest person that Eritrean have. One thing you have to know Jeberti is Beher and will remain Behery jeberti for ever. History will not be buried even your weak think and racist behave against jeberti. If I was you I would apologise to Jeberti people for the comment you made for our right to be recognise. you have got the same mentality as HGDF OR ISAYSE TOWARDS JEBERTI PEOPLE
