State-affiliated FANA Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported late Tuesday that the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) had elected Abiy as its chairperson.

His rise to become Prime Minister – head of government – is premised on approval by the Front’s Council and subsequent approval by the parliament. Political watchers hold that that process is a mere formality.

Reports indicate that current deputy Prime Minister, Demeke Mekonnen will maintain his post. Abiy is leader of the Oromo bloc of the EPRDF – the Oromo Peoples Democratic Organization (OPDO). He is also the first Premier from the Oromia region – Ethiopia’s largest and most populous regional state.

The Addis Standard news portal reports that he garnered 108 votes out of a possible 180 to emerge the winner. Abiy takes over from Hailemariam Desalegn who resigned his post in mid-February, according to him to allow for political reforms promised by the EPRDF in early January 2018.

He assumes leadership of the East African security and economic giant in a time of heated political crisis emanating from his state, Oromia. Anti-government protests in Oromia and northern Amhara region have riled the country since 2015 till early this year.

It has since led to two state of emergencies over a two-year period. The first was between October 2016 to August 2017 with the latest round declared in February barely 24-hours after the resignation of his predecessor.

Good luck to Ethiopians with their new prime minister. He won’t be as good as Meles Zenawi the great peoples leader. Giving/handing over the power and the premiership to the Oromo won’t guarantee peace or stability in Ethiopia.

When is poor Eritrea going to have a new prime minister or a leader?
Brave Ethiopians forced a change of a leader in Ethiopia but Eritreans are just so weak people.
It seems as long as Isaias is healthy and alive there would not be any leader or person to challenge him ever.
Ethiopians have given up on the useless confused and opportunist Eritrean so called “oppositions” based in Ethiopia.

    • Tesfai March 28, 2018

Give full credit to the Ethiopians who fought hard, even more credit to the Oromo people who made great deal of changes in their own identity, languages and heritage.
The Oromos deserve to be leaders of Ethiopia because they have respect to their own language, identity and heritage.
Show me an Oromo at this stage in history who hated his own Oromiffa language and the Oromo identity. None!!
In Eritrea, many of the worthless “elites” are still ashamed to speak and use in their own languages of Tigre -Tigrinya and ashamed of their own past history and ancestors.
People who are ashamed of their own languages and identity can not be leaders nor followers, except to live in slavery.
Africans need to learn from the renaissance of the Oromo people and identity

Courageous young generation take due credit for the sacrifices they paid that shook
Ethiopian politics . Their opposition parties gained support after popular uprising spread
      all over the country .
The same goes in ERITREA , we can’t export political movement inside the country
unless those endure injustices try to lead the call . For every concerned ERITREAN , It is
a question of national obligation we are entitled to involve .
HGDF army might use bullets against opponents but do not forget WEYANE AGAZI forces
also killed many of them . At the END , people’s voice have won the fight .

    • Gezae March 28, 2018

When the poor Woyane mercenaries’ so called opposition groups change their sellout behaviors.

      • Gezae March 28, 2018

In my view leadership is a relationship between people. Power is a leader’s capacity to influence another person or a group of people as well as an organization particular value, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors to mimic their own and allows society to operate smoothly. Using power to influence these change behavior of often proven to be less difficult than it is to change to beliefs and values. Therefore, most important character of a good leader is that they must be compassionate. Having a personality of caring about people is important. You can’t be a good leader unless you generally like people. That is how you bring out the best in them. No matter what credential they have and how much experience they have in administration but without being compassionate they can’t ever become a responsible and successful leader.
        .
As such there are notable leaders and forgettable ones. The differences between the notable ones and forgettable ones are how they rise to power and what they do with it. Some do great things and are revered even after they pass on, other are examples of what terrible power a leader can have. Throughout history there has been both types of leaders, ones who help people, and one who hurt people. Ther power over their followers are the same, both good and bad leaders are able to convince their followers to do as they say. Mahatma Gandhi, a major political and spiritual leader of India, followed nonviolent actions, avoiding any bloodshed in the country during their struggle for Independence. Because of his compassionate nature many leaders in today’s world has looked him upon. So leader must be compassionate first without being influence by any ulterior motive..

When you go back to your tigray.

        • Gezae March 28, 2018

What are talking about. You are a wrongheaded person. You are indifferent; do you thing I am hack like your mercenaries so called opposition group,go back to Tigray?..

          • AHMED SALEH !!! March 28, 2018

If the opposition group are mercenaries

‘ your mercenaries so called opposition groups ‘ . hmmmm

      • AHMED SALEH !!! March 28, 2018

Sometimes I cant understand whose side you take . For your information
Eritrean opposition groups are inside and outside ETHIOPIA but we are
waiting for legitimate political party that represent the movement . If you
have issues with them which I suspect , it is none of our business .

  • AHMED SALEH !!! March 28, 2018

Hopefully next ERITREAN leader will also come lowland or red sea cost regions . By then it will
silence the warmongers and trouble makers who ruled the country for over twenty-five years .
    – Unnecessary conflicts inside and outside the country .
    – To construct and prepare more than 300 prisons for law abiding citizens .
    – To force thousands young generation leave the country and to shoot to kill own brothers/sisters .

EVERYTHING IN LIFE HAS LIMITATION but if crossed it is time to shout ” ENOUGH IS ENOUGH .

    • Simon G. March 28, 2018

      Brother AHmed,
I was just saying the same thing to my family earlier. Let’s give a chance to a qualified moslim Eritrean. What are we going to lose? On the contrary, I see it a gain. Maybe the whole horn Africa can be in peace.
We have tried the Christian guy and his cronies and they put us in a miserable situation.

  • amanuel March 28, 2018

The beauty of having a constituition. No gun fire to come to power, just negotiation and election.
Most ethiopians seem happy with him. Will iseyas try to instigate amhara against oromo? Will he continue to sing same song that dr abiy is only a pupet? Will dr abiy much younger ( younger than iseyas youngest son) and energetic beat senile tyrant in asmara? Or Will the old mafia outsmart him like he did to hailemariam? Time will tell.

  • Tesfai March 28, 2018

History is like a cycle. It is an Oromo time to lead the Horn of Africa. The future of the Horn of African history belongs to the Oromo people.
Give full credit to the Ethiopians who fought hard, even more credit to the Oromo people who made great deal of changes in their own identity, languages and heritage in the last 25 years.

SHUT UP – leave Eritrea alone .
24/7 you keep saying that we are ashamed to speak your languages . ANJAL .
We are proud of our identity , languages and religions . If ARABIC language the
one you hated most does bother you , sorry go to hell .

    • Simon G. March 28, 2018

Teclay, with many nicks, stop copy & paste and also stating the same thing over and over, just like a parrot.
BTW, Eritreans have never ashamed of talking or writing in Tigrina but the one who are ashamed are people from Tigray. They rather speak/write in Amharic.

        Brother Simon
We can’t forget the dignified leaders from other ethnic group who perform their national duty properly that inspired us at our young ages .
IBRAHIM MOHAMED ALI was my favorite tegadaly in leadership . I didn’t meet
him but SuwuE ABRAHAM TECLE ( head of ELF fidaeen operatives ) used to
tells us stories about interesting members behind the scene .
By the way we should also give a chance to our females too .

    Congratulations!
I am so pleased to hear of Dr. Abey appointment to the EPRDF’s vacant seat of Chairman. Certainly he is the perfect candidate for this post. All your hard work has been paid off. The zeal to do something for the people and for the young masses has made his winning the post more realistic. I hope he easily fulfill all his promises and shine brightly in the future. Wishing him all the best for his noble future endeavors to lead its people and country to a peace and prosperity; win the trust of people by being strategically friendly avoiding any kind of provocation or war with neighboring countries and a degree of transparency in the day to day working and the governance of the country.
    .
And I take this opportunity to congratulate him on his well deserved and overlong success..

” … win the trust of people by being strategically friendly avoiding any kind of provocation or war with neighboring countries ..”

      Gezae

This is something you should tell DIA, your boss.
Dr. Abey is a young man who want serve his people and his country.
His election as head of the ruling coalition, shows how much Ethiopia, a country that considered itself a Christian island and treated the Oromo as second class citizens, has changed for the better.

      • Gezae March 28, 2018

Do you comprehend that the 30% of Dr. Abiy and the great Oromo people success is ours.

        • amanuel March 29, 2018

That is a lie as usual, the trade mark of iseyas. You conspiered with weyane to get olf to camp and surrender. That is what oromos know and we know gezae feshkal hasawi.

          • Gezae March 29, 2018

Door-to-door campaigning is a thing of the past. Today, Twitter and Facebook chats are being used to target constituents. As we all know, the news cycle is entrenched in new information 24/7. This means the mainstream media discuss and share political information, news, and analysis at an incredibly fast pace. As sucn the Internet is the ultimate forum on which you can discuss and I believe the hottest thing in political campaigns. Political debate today has a much different meaning. Why? Because more people are speaking out and being heard. In the pre-Internet era, you had to write an opinion column in a newspaper or send a letter to the editor to have your opinion published. Otherwise, only your close friends, family, and coworkers heard your political rants. Over time, the Internet will almost certainly mature as a political tool by giving political power to people who’ve never had it before, opening up corrupt political systems — and increasing democratic deliberations. So, Brother/Sister, we are not coming here and going there for fun. Think of how costly that time would have been spent on the internet! do you think is that without charge?

Congratulations to the people of Ethiopia. I think they have made the right choice. I understand it is not a big deal but why is aigaforum still shy posting the news?

  • k.tewolde March 28, 2018

Who fills the post is irrelevant compared to the process which got him there, the Ethiopian society is leaving us in the dust while HGDEF exploits the uprising as implosion and disintegration, it is indeed an agitation of a restless society for a change unlike the submissive, docile,”peaceful” counterpart to the north. One man rule 26 yrs and counting…we should be ashamed of ourselves.
