Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe.

Frederick Douglass

The most fantasy panorama witnessed in Eritrean leadership system is that ignoring the obvious or possible changes that may occur in human behavior, culture, politics, economy and environment. Logically, as far as human creature is in constant motion; within that motion change is inevitable that positively or negatively affects the attributes of peace, justice, economic and political interests, human dignity, moral will being, and environmental health. The leadership of People’s for Democracy and Justice in Eritrea succeeds neither to preserve the positive merits of the armed struggle for independence nor to cope the modern advanced governance system to rule citizens with justice, respect and dignity.

The most desperate achievements of PFDJ for the last two decades in Eritrea:

1)   Killing the spirit of creativity, innovativeness, independent and critical thinking of citizens;

2)   Creating robust environment where people to live in fear, mistrust, confusion, hatred and frustration;

3)   Marginalizing the significance and contribution of Eritrean intellectuals in nation building process;

4)   Establishing a totalitarian, military and hostile state that reaches at the edge of committing self-suicide;

5)   Eliminating the justice system that enables the leadership to “enslave”, violate, torture, detain, displace and murder innocent citizens

In various occasions, President Issias Afewroki, the core architect of the national strategy, was questioned about the process of democratization in Eritrea. In his response, the government would not bring any priority to civil and political rights of the citizens rather he stated to insist more in economic, social and cultural rights of the people. However, the tactic he has adopted is confusing and obscure which enables the leadership to use it mostly for the purpose of public consumption. The government builds “schools” without mobilizing interested and innovative students, qualified teachers and teaching resources; builds “hospitals” without putting enough medicines, medical equipment and competent physicians; builds infrastructure without using proper business activities, and free movement of citizens; and builds dams without allowing the young citizens to plough their lands freely. His baffled strategy causes more economic disaster, social crisis, blind justice, endless migration, political uncertainty and unnecessary physical and mental torture.

The national motto- “Our national asset is our human capital” could not move beyond political rhetoric, but in practice the system deliberately works to marginalize the input of intellectuals and academic freedom that could pave for national development. It systematically uses ignorance as strategy to exclude the wider population from real social, political and economic life of the country. As citizens, no matter their educational level, most of Eritreans have least knowledge about their true history, political character, economic development, justice system and other government activities that has been intentionally done to keep them in confusion, illusion and fear. Misinformed citizens are usually less competent to comprehend, interact and decide what is best to their futurity. The traditional values of Eritrean armed struggle- “HaFash (Mass) yNqah (Enlighten), yWedeb (Mobilize/organize) and yTateq (Equip)”, which was a workable strategy to defeat a well armed Ethiopia, has been eradicated.

The new approach the government is opting to maintain its power is: “HaFash (Mass) yDenqar (Misinform), yBeten (Disorganize) and yRad (Terrify). The media outlet is strictly controlled; and education, as source of enlightenment, is demolished to block the horizon of new thinking. Thousands of Eritreans are being dispersed everywhere like “honey bee without a queen”; and the rest majority citizens inside the county are being terrified to live in fear because of continuous persecution. Virtually, the present Eritrea, under PFDJ leadership, cries for not having well qualified and motivated teachers, lawyers, theologians, engineers, political scientists, physicians, architects, accountants and economists. The futurity of Eritrea is uncertain since the educational institutions fail to be a source of enlightenment, creativity and discovery. Rather the educational system becomes a tool to demolish the spirit, value and credibility of academic circles.

Being in silence or avoiding/pretending the problem as not in existence will add more thickness to the growing problems, and hurt the well being of the state. More objectively speaking, Eritreans are divided by narrow conflicting political interests or perspectives, but they must be united by humanity and “prior national question” to heal the chronic pain that knocks each family. Home to home liberation is the best strategy which could effectively work in closed and violent system to enlighten Eritrean families. Enlightening each Eritrean family means enlightening the whole community that can help to transform the perception of the people at national level. Home to home liberation is not pricey, risky and time consuming. The strategy needs one dedicated and enlightened ambassador of change and justice in each family that could help to liberate the citizens from ignorance, fear and despair, because uninformed society cannot bring healthy and sustainable democratic changes. Together we can bring change and difference!!

“Marginalizing the significance and contribution of Eritrean intellectuals in nation building process;”

There are very few educated Eritreans and almost no intellectuals. So, who are the Eritrean intellectuals that you are talking about?

Under the Popular Front we have free education at all levels. This is just the beginning. We have a long way to go. The government deserves to be commended not blamed.

    • Halafi Mengedi February 6, 2013

If we are to believe Wikipedia. Wikipedia compares and/or contrasts both scholars and intellectuals and draws a subtle distinction between both. It states that “Traditionally, the scholarly and the intellectual classes were closely identified; however, while intellectuals need not necessarily be actively involved in scholarship, they often have an academic background and will typically have an association with a profession.

From “Wikipedia’s” point of view, Those “very few educated Eriterans” can also be categorized as intellectuals. According the online Encyclopedia, an intellectual “often” has “an academic background” with some kind of profession whether it is an accounting, medicine or teaching.

With that said, Asgedom Abraham’s claim that “ There are very few educated Eritreans and almost no intellectuals. does not really make sense. Can’t those few educated Eritreans be intellectual as well?

      • Asgedom Abraham February 6, 2013

Intellectual is someone like Noam Chomsky and Edward Said.

        • Halafi Mengedi February 6, 2013

Well you said “There are very few educated Eritreans and almost no intellectuals.” suggesting that there are very few Eritrean “public intellectuals”. Can you mention at least one Eritrean “public intellectual”?

          • Asgedom Abraham February 6, 2013

Fitsum Abraham is an educated Eritrean. Are you satisfied with that?

          • Halafi Mengedi February 6, 2013

“Almost no intellectuals” and “no intellectuals” are views that are diametrically opposed. The former indicates that there are intellectuals that are very few in number where as the latter suggests that there are ZERO intellectuals.

    @ Asgodom Abraham

Why donoot you go to your Master the vampire Issayas? Three months ago I wa in Asmera.
No Food, No Elec. , No Fuel, No Water, No freespech, No law, ..only slavry and poverty.

    Everyone hates your vampire master.

Why donot you go there if everything is Ok?? You hypocrite monkey hgdef

    • Asgedom Abraham February 6, 2013

Where do you live? Perhaps you are comparing Eritrea with some Western country. You have to accept the fact that Eritrea is a poor country. Most Africans are aware of the economic situation in their countries. Stop acting like an arrogant and ignorant person.

      • issayas is a V*A*M*P*I*R*E February 6, 2013

NO. I am comparing Eritrea under Haile Sellasie. Even comparing Eritrea under DERG it was 100 times better than now.

There are only few who live better than before. Hgdef monkeys and their followers while my people are suffering

        • dekebat February 6, 2013

V*A*M*P*I*R*E You forgot to mention There were no Rashaida in Eritrea and specifically in Kebesa and Asmara under DERG or HaileSilasie. Any one who said they have seen Rashaida during DERG or Hailesilasie is a monkey HEGDEF . Rashaida were living near Kassala in their own village near the checkpoint of Kassala and their tribe name is called ZIBIEDI After Eritrean Liberation Isias brought them to Eritrea Along with Other Nigerians(Tokharir) from Kerbelgash and called them Rashaidans. These are the people who are making all these mess and Havoc to deki Kebesa Christians. During Mengstu there were some 100 Nigerians (tokharir muslims) in Barjka and DERG never touched them because openly said they were foreigners. When we were fleeing from Derg Bullets and ask to hide in the Tokharir(Nigerians) homes they chased us with an axe. But Isias brought more of those Nigerians From Kerbelgash in Kassala along with The Zibiedi (Rashaidans). Now these are the Group who are abducting Killing Kebesa Christian girls and children inside Eritrea and in Shegerab While The Muslim Eritreans Tigre In Shegrab are enjoying full rights like Sudanese and armed with weapons even did not come to help their Christian Eritreans. The Christians are denied and are not allowed to arm themselves for defence because they are Christians and foreigners but the Tigre are Muslims and Sudan is their home But wage a Jihad war against Eritreans. Anyone who lived in Sudan will not dispute this. In Sudan all Christians from Eritrea are called Habesh Ethiopians and All Muslims from Eritrea are called Eritreans. The Fact the Shegerab Tigre Muslims colluded with the Rashaidans and Nigerians to abduct and rape Eritreans did not defend Eritreans with their weapons were is the HEDE LIBI HADE HIZBI.

  • Adhanom Tewelde February 6, 2013

    Dear Asghedom Abraha,

I would like to thank you for provocative issues that you have raised to warm the discussion among interested citizens. The commonly used definition stated in most of dictionaries that I have checked is normally INTELLECTUAL is someone who is guided or developed by or relying on the intellect rather than upon emotions or feelings; rational.

Apart from the dictionary meaning, in my context intellectual is any highly educated person who is contributing something to wellbeing of his/her people or organization on the basis of his/her intellect and profession in rational manner. Someone could be educated, but may be irrational and emotional. It is very hard to call him/her intellectual as he/she fails to be guided by reason or logic.

Secondly, as you stated “free education for all” that the Government of Eritrea follows from very beginning has to be appreciated and has played a big role to minimize the level of illiteracy. Literacy to certain degree is acceptable, but as citizen, you should open your eyes to see the quality of education that we have in Secondary School and tertiary level. We should not be confused with increased enrolment rate that the nation has scored for two decades, frequently used for public consumption.

We need to ask what kind/quality of students our educational system is producing. In my eyes the system is destructive which kills the spirit, value and motive of the new generation that has in educational sphere. In fact this cannot be healed easily. It will remain as a serious problem for certain period of time. You can visit different colleges that we have; and check the following indicators normally:

    1. Human Power (quality of lecturers)
    2. Library (the quality of books)
    3. Laboratory (chemicals and equipment)
    4 Administrative system
    5. Research capacity
    6. Aspiration of students
    7. Academic achievement etc

    • Asgedom Abraham February 6, 2013

      Brother Adhanom,

There is always room for improvement. As I said earlier: this is just the beginning. I know some graduates from Eritrea who have well-paid jobs in the Middle East (Computer Science graduates) and others who have excelled in their further studies in the West in subjects like Physics and Mathematics.

Even if somethings are not going very well in Eritrea, it is wrong to put all the blame on the Eritrean government.

      • issayas is a V*A*M*P*I*R*E February 6, 2013

Eritrean Government? HAHAHAHAHAHAH That is MAFIA. SHIFTA.

Like all Nazis after WWII, isayas and his hgdef followers will be punished by law.

Following your arguments I couldn’t find substantial
feed back to readers . I believe you are old enough
to analyze situations respectively . But you prefer to
act as representative of your MASTER propoganda
antenna to replace ALI ABDU . Hurry up , submit
          your resume for the position to this address ;
Eri – Tv , HGDF Mendef cell , Karshelli Asmera .
FOR REAL IT WILL HAPPEN SOON , everybody will
get what he deserves . time is clicking . Stop fooling .

YOU HAD NO GUT TO FACE THE KIDS FROM BENGAZI.

      • sarah February 6, 2013

Asgedom, You really are a piece of work! First you say ‘Eritrea is a poor country’. A poor country where generals and ‘party’ members have their own factories and investments worth millions in Juba, Uganda and Kenya? The people are left to fend for themselves.
Asgedom, our mothers and grand mothers(mothers whose children dies for the country) are begging in the streets. You talk about the western countries! they worked for whatever they have now; gave their people education and freedom to work, discuss and change until they got it right! Not by terrorizing and enslaving people!
Then, you say whatever is going wrong in Eritrea. ‘it is wrong to put the blame on Eritrean government’ Who is to blame then? Now is it the people to blame? HANQIQOM?

        • ahmed Saleh February 6, 2013

          Sarah
The problem is we do not want to see things beyond ourselves .
Few lucky families have the support of their children in diaspora
but majority depend on the government deliverance . You are
absolutely right our people are begging in places of worship and
young girls forced to sell their bodies for money but the sad part
is to observe some sold out people who try to dismiss the reality .
Any way their prayer will be heard and real Eritrean will take over
to stop the nonsense , God willing .

        • Asgedom Abraham February 6, 2013

          Sara,

No one has forbidden you to invest in Juba,Uganda,Kenya or any other place in the world.

You talked about generals, do you know how many generals we have in Eritrea?

          • sarah February 7, 2013

            Asgedom,
we are not talking about me. We are talking about officials and a so called gvt that wants other eritreans’ money to be invested in the country and the money they stole from the country will be invested in other countries.
Asgedom, no matter how much you try to make the ‘gvt’ look good and a victim, you can not hide the truth. You want to know who invested where? just got Juba and look at the list of investors in the new big hotels and construction companies. Go to kenya and ask about the owners and investors of small factories, like button factory, BALIKA factory etc. But then, you know this; you are just trying to look innocent.

  • belay nega February 6, 2013

    Brother ADHANOM
ALL WHAT YOU SAID IS A CONSEQUENCE THERE IS NO SOLUTION UNTIL WE FIND OUT THE CAUSE AND ACCEPT THE REALITY.

  • Murad Ali February 6, 2013

    Brother Adhanom,
I agree wholeheartedly that “home to home” liberation is the way to go.. but the big issue is who is going to liberate Isaias’s home wherein the whole problem lies..if that is fixed the rest will follow suit in a domino like effect..

I admit I do not have the gut (maanta) to volunteer.. would you Adhanom?

  • ahmed Saleh February 6, 2013

    Murad
when he said ” home to home liberation ” it means that our
people each in every home to free themselves from fear
and other negative influences . Don’t you agree that is the
main reason why people running away because of fear and
    confusion .
And to voice for the cause of our people does not mean to
volunteer in military confrontation but to show support on
behalf of their advocacy not to let them down . There was
a time HGDF used propaganda to portray Eritreans outside
the country like his backbone supporters to frustrate the well
wishers within inside the country . No more , now this critical
time obliged us to show them that we are on their side .

    • Murad Ali February 6, 2013

      Salam Ahmed,
I got your point brother but I still believe that our people are running away in their droves because of the atmosphere of fear and terror brought about by the regime and its security apparatus.
Once the MAN is gone our people will still be running (including you and me)
but this time towards our beloved Eritrea…and the sooner we dispose of Wedi Aforki the better.
And mind you that will spare brother Adhanom the headache of implementing his grandeur scheme of liberating our households Home to Home…

By the way I am not sure which way brother Adhanom will be running!!

Have a great day welad adjee!!

    The biggest threat to Eritreans:

PFDJ created an environment of mistrust.During the colonial days each betrayal created determination and unity to defeat the enemy but the betrayal of PFDJ has created a huge rift of mistrust among ourselves which will take many years to fix.
