Despite strong GDP growth over the last ten years, Africa has failed to generate economic opportunities for its young population – and that spells trouble for a sustainable future. It’s a key finding of the 2018 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), released Monday by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

The average Business Environment score for African countries, down almost five points in the last decade, is a special concern. “This is a worrying trend given that the number of working age Africans (15-64 years old) is expected to grow by almost another 30 percent over the next ten years,” the IIAG report said. “This will increase demand for jobs in an environment where on average progress in Sustainable Economic Opportunity is almost nonexistent.”

There is no strong relationship between the size of a country’s economy and its performance in Sustainable Economic Opportunity either. In 2017, four of the 10 countries with the highest GDP on the continent scored below the African average on Sustainable Economic Opportunity:  Algeria, Angola, Nigeria, and Sudan sit in the lower half of the rankings on that measure. Meanwhile, the island nations of Seychelles and Cabo Verde rank at 5 and 6 for high scores in Sustainable Economic Opportunity.

In overall rankings based on dozens of measures, the two island countries – along with top-ranked Mauritius, and Namibia and Botswana – hold the Top 5 spots for good governance in Africa. The lowest ranks go to Somalia, South Sudan, Libya, Eritrea and the Central African Republic.

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation, launched in 2006, releases the annual Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) as an assessment of the quality of governance in African countries. It is the most comprehensive collection of data on African governance.

(“This will increase demand for jobs in an environment where on average progress in Sustainable Economic Opportunity is almost nonexistent.”)….that is why our homeland has been bleeding profusely for awhile along an archaic autocratic leadership which kills jobs and minds that can create them.

Just blaming other leaderships and the usual bla bla blas is not good enough for Eritrea.
What solutions real practical solutions do you have apart from bla bla blas and halewlows?

An interesting article and to my mind a factual piece with underpinning evidence. However, one needs to realise that in respect to Eritrea “Sustainable Economic Opportunity” under Isaias is something that we might as well forget.

Economic sustainability and human rights are interlinked and abuse of the latter is deliberately made to kill economic sustainability. That’s how dictators such as the monster in Asmara survive.

Isaias does not care about economic sustainability in Eritrea as long as the country generates sufficient revenue to sustain his daily whiskey consumption.

May the whiskey he drinks tonight be his last and a catalyst that takes him to the special place reserved for him in hell, where he should burn for eternity.

      Eritrea forever, death to dictatorship.

Quote: “Africa has failed to generate economic opportunities for its young population” Unquote
    Is that really a surprise?
Is it really a new phenomenon?
Since when did the African people were taken as Human Beings by its indigenous dictatorial rulers, let alone by foreign colonisers?
Please let us NOT be nobles with meaningless words. We know what it is all about.

It is NOT about African Youth and Africa in general. It is — exclusively, intensely — about glaring exploitation of Africa by colonial forces of yeteryears camouflaged by their ‘products’ of indigenous Africans for their everlasting colonization of Africa. Period! The colonial forces will never leave Africa until it is completely emaciated out of its dignity and natural richness. .

    Please note the following quotation:
    a) Quote: “The lost opportunity of the last decade is deeply concerning” Unquote Very sentimental diplomatic language, but meaningless, as usual.
    b) Quote: “Africa has a huge challenge ahead” Unquote. In contrast with the glaring African history, the words are simply hollow.
    c) Quote: “Young citizens of Africa need hope, prospects and opportunities” Unquote.. Flowery words but devoid of meaningful substance.

And so, the horror of the “Dark” Continent of Africa will keep on going upon the unfortunate people of Black Africa who are destined to be at the bottom of the ladder of Life, for eternity. Let the African “modern” educated (?!?) Scholars of the Highest Order from various Universities around the Globe with Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D) Degrees get together and save their Africa from annihilation. THAT WOULD BE THE MIRACULOUS DAY for AFRICA!!!!! . THE END
