The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Sunday called on the African Union to deploy peace keeping troops along the Eritrea and Djibouti border to resolve dispute between the two horn African nations. The call came during the 57th ministerial meeting of IGAD on sidelines of the AU summit in Addis Ababa.

Earlier last month, the U.N. Security Council and African Union urged Eritrea and Djibouti to resolve their border dispute peacefully following the withdrawal of peacekeeping troops from Qatar.

Djibouti accused Eritrean troops of occupying the Dumeira mountain area shortly after 450 Qatari peacekeepers left last month and lodged a formal complaint with the African Union.

Qatar had been mediating a territorial dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea before it withdraw its troops after diplomatic clash with other Arab nations.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, AU commission chairperson, said that the union would send a “fact-finding mission to the Djibouti-Eritrea border”, which Eritrea refuses.

The IGAD meeting also expressed concern over escalating conflict in South Sudan and called warring parties respect the peace agreement they had signed in Addis Ababa.

“Moussa Faki Mahamat, AU commission chairperson, said that the union would send a “fact-finding mission to the Djibouti-Eritrea border”, which Eritrea refuses.”

    ———-

Is Eritrea refusing a “fact-finding mission to the Djibouti-Eritrea border” ????

If this news is true it will lead to unnecessary escalation.
The border between the two countries has never been a problem. The two former colonizers (France and Italy) may have enough cartography to pin point where the border line starts and ends.
Any escalation will give Ethiopia an opportunity to size more Eritrean land, this time with the excuse of defending Djibouti.
Besides, Eritrea lacks skilled diplomats who can defend their country, because the regime is an absolute dictatorship, and many of those working in its Embassies are not qualified for the job. They are given jobs when they show support for brutal the dictatorship not for their skills or academic merits.
What worries me most is the fact that the regime is more interested in keeping its people hostage more than defending Eritrean sovereign land, while Eritrea’s enemies are using every tool in their toolbox to let the regime act irrationally and behave in a manner that Eritrea loses the case even when it has all the necessary legal documents to prove that we own the land.
For how long the dump colonels will go to a war that can be won diplomatically ?

Any IGAD member state army will never close to Eritrean Territories for any case. We Eritrean do not believe or respect these Ethiopia’s Woyane puppet states.

    • Nahon July 5, 2017

Its true that Ethiopia seem to have a strong influence on IGAD countries, but this is not an excuse to let IGAD countries stand on Ethiopian side, on every issue.
The world is full of such cases where countries in a neighborhood have conflicting interests when it comes to territorial claims.
Let’s not forget that there is also an option to have international bodies, such a AU or UN send experts who come from neutral countries, or even from other continents.
Higdef is a rigid and stupid organization, their primary interest is not defending our land, but power of the criminal clique and the ideology that justifies their brutal rule.

      • Gezae July 6, 2017

Mr. Nahon, I will not agree with your last paragraph. First of all for your knowledge I am not a member of any Eritrean organization; but I have enough know how of HIGDEF’s foreign policy..So let me detail you. Higdef’s foreign policy is guided by the country history, geographical location and the aspiration of the people.
Hence the essence of HIGDEF’s foreign policy are-
Develop friendly relations with countries particularly the red sea regions and immediate neighbors.
Safe guard vital security and geo-strategic interest of Eritrea.
Remove the core issue of Badme in accordance with the final and binding resolution.
Promote the image of Eritrea as strong, dynamic and modern.
Augment economic and commercial interest of the country. and protect the interest of Eritrea’s expatriate abroad

        • k.tewolde July 7, 2017

“….protect the interest of Eritrea’s expatriate abroad…’? you must have the inside scoop.Do you have more to tell us about your know how of HGDEF’s foreign policy? I am tuned in Mr.Gezae.

          • Gezae July 8, 2017

The most basic problem is not that you/I don’t know Eritrea’s foreign policy, but the difference is you cynically trying to manipulate the policy or system for pretty group/s desires. As any citizen of the country Eritrea who struggle for democratic reform, I understand the great deal of politics is a fundamental struggle for rights, but it also a struggle that has to waged intelligently. So we must have to change the character of our politics to prompt fertile ground for democratic reform.
Thus, our difference with you and your group/s is I believe in the long run even a tyrannical government only has the power that people confer on it and coming to understand history is beginning of making thing right.

        • k.tewolde July 9, 2017

First of all,I don’t represent any group’s views, everything I say is mine, nobody else’s but mine, how about yours? second, ‘…a tyrannical (government) only has the power that people confer on it….’ what kind of philosophical book are you reading? definitely not Plato’s.

I think both counties would benefit if neither AU nor IGAD get involved in the dispute in any capacity. I don’t know about Djibouti, but Eritrea should ask two important questions before even considering them for anything.

Question 1, why hasn’t the AU been screaming foul on the continued occupation of Badme by Ethiopia.

Question 2, why hasn’t Eritrea granted membership to IGAD? After Eritrea left the membership on its own, it has been asking for years to return.

Unless to complicate the matter even farther, I don’t blame anyone for not putting trust on AU and IGAD. Recent history ain’t on their side!

          Habtu

Why did your boss leave IGAD in the first place ?

He must have known that Ethiopia can veto Eritrea’s reinstatement, but because he and you don’t see things as they are.
You take decisions on the spur of empty pride, and them cry foul for not getting what you want.
It’s you who need to wash in “kelet shewate at Gaber Dera’anto! “.
Sad indeed, that Eritrea is being brutalized by Higdef, while people like you justify their crimes.

Gezae, DIA beside his x-allies Weyane created the boarder problem since 1981 when DIA gave Bademe as a reward to weyane for their role in defeating ELF. After 17 years, when DIA became disappointed with Weyane’s policies regarding the relationship between the two countries DIA ordered one of his ignorant military officers to retake Bademe. DIA is very fond on creating enmity with countries to prolong his dictatorial rule by keeping the people on a continuous alert from his fabricated enemies. The malignant nature of DIA has caused tremendous problems to Eritreans everywhere to the level that they became ostracized.

  • Danilo July 4, 2017

ISAYAS knows how to dug in HANISH ISLANDS, BADME and now in RAS-DUMMERA, but knows nothing about diplomatic way of fight. It is logic a country like ours with one man designed policy we may lose once again.

  • k.tewolde July 5, 2017

The nation is has been at war within itself since its inception with no clear battle lines drawn. The border dispute with its neighbors is one of the result of the wounds sustained within that ongoing battle.Unless this internal carnage abate and lasting resolution is found, the unattended wound will continue to fester in the nations perimeter regardless of the the intervention of IGAD,AU,EU,Qatar …………. the nation has been sick for awhile.

    • Gezae July 9, 2017

Off course the nation has to be proud of itself to move forward and this is clear that as Eritrea does not stand up, there will be no peace in the horn. So that we have to be bold enough in our national ambitions to win, because this country does not only belong to/for PIA/PFDJ it also belong to me/ you, our kids grand kids and the generation to come.

Emperor Haile Selassie or Shaleqa Mengistu of Ethiopia did not give away Eritrea’s strategic Red Sea islands, the Hanish Islands, to the Arabs and the worthless Arab League but the ignorant “al Sawra” leaders who gave Eritrean identity and languages, such as Issaias, gave away the Hanish for nothing.
No Eritrean will be surprised if the Assab port is handed to the savage Wahabi and Gulf Arabs, and the Ras Dumera to Djibouti, another member of the Arab League and a fake Arab city state.
The Arabs will do anything to dismantle Eritrea and to Arabize it. Arabs do not want to help Eritrean refugees in the Arab world but they will do everything to Arabize Eritrea.

The most honorable chairman of the monkey-see-monkey-do organization -which has been instrumental in creating the never ending chaos in Africa from its inception – must be out of his mind to entertain the proposal by IGAD -which is another devious and difunctional entity inimical to the interest of the continent- to deploy a trojan horse in the guise of “peace keeping troops”. Africa can do well without these empty shells and Eritrea will be better of to stand its ground and look for worthy partners in the international arena in dealing with its peace agenda for the Horn of Africa and beyond. As far as Eritreans are concerned, the history of the OAU/AU and IGAD is that of betrayal and treachery and it is written in ERITREAN BLOOD. Eritrea will never forgive nor forget the crime committed against it by these criminal institutions. I would suggest that the most esteemed chairman should peddle his most honorable proposal to the masters of the very organizations in the U.S. and E.U. He is a fine gentleman and we should all wish him good luck!

      The Observer

Who is this “the most esteemed chairman” ?
Is he the Maoist monkey, aka DIA ?
A worthless drunkard whose big ego turned him into a lone hyena.
He is his system will be remembered as the worst of the worst Eritrea has ever seen in centuries of its existence.

Nahom, I think you need kelet shewate at Gaber Dera’anto! You seen unreal things! All you seeing are monkeys, shaebia, PIA and Woyane. AU has a new chairman and he ain’t what you see.

      • Sunzro July 6, 2017

You wrote, “Is he the Maoist monkey, aka DIA ?”
Maoism is long dead even in China. Do you mean the “Arabist-Abid-slave” of the savage Jihadi Wahabi Arabs and the Arabist Egyptians?

  • amanuel July 5, 2017

Gezae does not know the d/c b/n IGAD and AU as one would expect from our ignorant higdf gahafat.

      And you do??

    • Gezae July 8, 2017

      Amanuel,

I have more than enough knowledge about IGAD and AU and their differences. I believe the AU should be a caring mother having many [53 or more] children and its role to grow peace, trust and respect among the siblings states with strong emotional bond. But I also believe if AU has failed to settle a solved problem and maintain peace or bilateral relation between neighboring nations it will definitely not succeeding now either. The same to IGAD.

There is one fundamental rule we need to know that nations/states are guided only by their own interest and have no obligation to other countries which did/do not confront to those interests. Brother, we don’t have to dig deep history to understand the reality. We have passed some of the dirtiest chapters and we do not heading to that type of chapter further again. So that confront Ethiopia’s or Djibouti’s interests.

You are talking to people on this forum as if the government of DIA is running the country as usually governments around the world would do, with some degree of normality.

But the truth is much bitter than what you want us to believe.

    – DIA and his government have refused to work with the constitution so that they can rule the country by decrees and whims.
    – They went to war with neighbors without consulting anybody and caused extermination of an army made mainly of young people who were supposed to be beneficiaries of the post liberation era.
    – Those who survived DIA’s endless wars with neighbors are now used and abused by the so-called Generals as slaves or left with no choice but to look for a future somewhere else.
    – Tens of thousands of prisoners, mostly civilians are dying in dungeons of the regime, in a country where there is neither proper prison nor courts, but graveyards for the living.
    – Eritrea is now known as the country that produces the highest number of refugees from Africa and third at world level. The shameless Generals/colonels are now happy because they want live on 2% sent back by this young refugees while abusing those who could not escape at home.

Is the above ok for you ?, may be …. kab wikianos bi manka,

May God/Allah protect my beloved country.

    • Gezae July 10, 2017

Before responding to your statements I of course need to begin by providing an explanation of my position in sufficient details so we can all understand what my view entails.. i/We understand or thought of a tyranny is usually as cruel and oppressive and it often is, but originally the term was or is rule by a person/s who lack legitimacy whether they malign or benevolent. Therefore the only solution to rid off or the only solution of tyranny is to maintain legitimacy; to an unbroken accountability to the people through a written constitution that avoid concentration of power in the hand of one or few who might abuse power.
For sure as we all understand the power of one/few, if fearless and focused is formidable and the power of many, mass or people working together is better. But now how do we get into the power of many is the one billion dollars question here? cont….

After talking about tyranny and theories on it, that lead to nowhere, you failed to condemn it,
Instead, you tried to escape by saying how transfer power to people “is the one billion dollars question”.
You seem to be one of those making a living by working for Higdef.
Nowadays only those who are deeply involved in Higdef’s underworld and some gullible who cannot see difference between sugar and salt, remain with the regime camp.

  • Gezae July 12, 2017

Brother- First of all this is my personal position. but I believe that this standpoint could be one that many silent majority agree with, So before we proceed the discussion, I would like better to convey our political views without ending in bruised egos and hurt feeling. Thanks

    Part ii
This time politics in our region and in most third world countries is found devoid of ethics.. Immorality, selfishness, greed, in general corruption have crept the states,. Thus the set of power consequently decayed and eating the entrails societies and make the countries miserable. However, if you come to Eritrea in comparison I would say considerably or relatively Eritrea is much better than other states..

Somehow, I accept that the general and colonels are the helm of affairs in the country and are important decision makers. As such they wield vast amount of power; .But unless it is overstated i don’t agree that all or most utilize their power for their own private gains neglecting the country and the people. .Contrarily, except very few, majority of the generals and colonels are slaves of the people. If you are of my age most of the generals and colonels now in Eritrea are our friends school mates, relatives, and or neighbors. so generally we know them who they are and what are they doing day to day pretty much.; cont,,,
