Kenya dismisses UN report on Eritrea

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 21 – Kenya on Saturday dismissed a report by the United Nations exonerating Eritrea from claims that it funded the Al Shabaab militia with both monetary and ammunitions support against the Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 21 – Kenya on Saturday dismissed a report by the United Nations exonerating Eritrea from claims that it funded the Al Shabaab militia with both monetary and ammunitions support against the Kenya defence forces saying it is one sided.

Speaking during a press briefing on the war in Somalia, Foreign Affairs Ministry Director of the Horn of Africa Division Lindsey Kiptiness said that no one has come to Kenya to investigate the claims.

“In as far as we are concerned I don’t think it is accurate that report has been taken to UN. I don’t think that is true. Simply because I am also reading stories from papers like you,” Kiptiness said.

“If Kenya did allege that Eritrea sent three plane loads of arms to Al Shabaab, the UN has been undertaking an investigation. They have not come to us. So I don’t know how the report has already been made to the UN before they come to the other side of the story.”

He discredited the report saying that for it to be objective, thorough investigations need to be undertaken.

“We are still waiting for them to come, and if they come we will give our report accordingly. Let’s wait until they come to our side otherwise that would be a one sided story,” he said. “If somebody has leaked such a report then I consider it to be just that…until they get to hear our side of the story.”

He said Kenya is ready and willing to cooperate with the UN should it wish to clarify any information about the claims against Eritrea.
The UN had discounted reports that Eritrea supplied weapons to the al-Shabaab to fight Kenyan troops last year.
A preliminary report by the Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group (SEMG) to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) concluded that the allegations were untrue.

Part of the report stated that after the SEMG’s preliminary assessment, the allegations were incorrect and that the alleged deliveries to Baidoa probably did not take place.

The monitoring group also pursued its investigation into alleged arms deliveries by air to the Al Shabaab controlled airfields in southern Somalia in late October and early November 2011.

Kenya had accused Eritrea of delivering arms to the Al Qaeda-linked Islamists and reported the matter to the Security Council through the regional Inter Governmental Authority on Development.

Foreign Affairs minister Moses Wetangula had also summoned Eritrean ambassador to Kenya Beyene Russom to his office to explain Asmara’s alleged links to the militants.

Eritrea through its Foreign Affairs ministry however vehemently denied the claims branding them as part of Ethiopia’s campaign of misinformation to discredit Asmara.

The Eritrean embassy in Nairobi had further demanded independent investigations into the matter to be conducted by UNSC to the above mentioned allegation and all other unfounded related accusations.

      mr.suspy
      thank you.
you got the secret. this sanction will remain paralyzed. the dictator will use the bisha gold revenue to bribe the UN key staff in order to waive his crimes. it is known that every effort will be done by the dictator to remain in power. he will use the eritrean life and resources for the his egotistical goals.
i am so sorry for our martyrs and for the unlucky eritrean people who remained long line in the dukan hidree… DUKAN TILMET… the whole day and night for a slice of bread. whereas his gold is used to arm alshebab and other terrorist groups in our region. yet now the higher officer in UN and other selfish individuals will gain a lot to offset reality in the ground which will be destructive to the eritrean people.

Abdi, mr.susy and others appear to be happy of the UN “contraband report”. It is no surprise to sane mided men, because these are already out of their minds. Kenya’s reply is damning to the reputation of the UN and its officials (if after all this was done by an accredited body). UN Secretary General is going to be held responsible for creating such a mess in the name of the UN. To make his officials behave well and work with care is his responsibility (under his department of personnel). It is a shame for the UN that such a report was made public without consulting the concerned bodies (including Kenya and IGAD as well as AMISOM). It will be the duty of all democratic forces to make this allegation verified, by hook or crook. It is also the responsibility of the UN to give the name of the drafter & dispatcher of the report, if after all the UN itself believes that or accepts that such a report was made official.

Whatever the case, the good news is Kenya has leapt forward and become number 1 enemy of the regime in Eritrea. The most important thing is our neighbors to be enemies of the regime; the rest UN, African Union and IGAD will follow our neighbors. It is really a good news.

    It is very sad to see our kenyan brothers who r in power to lie for nothing infront of the people of the world and infront of the mighty God. They r in a position but they couldnt dare to say No to cooperate with groups who r engaged against eritrea. it could have been a pride if they saw a little courage. So we pray God for their sins. With all respect to the people of kenya, i could say that their politicians have made a big mistake. This is not poletics because Poletics is an art of wisdom;

Kenyans made a mistake. They tried to confuse the people of the world; They r responsible for what they did. But we, as a people shouldnt repeat the mistakes; we shouldnt believe the bla blas. BETRI HAQUIS TIKETIN EMBER AYTISIBERIN

    • Hameed January 23, 2012

      Michael

First and foremost ask your boss to repent from his sins against Eritreans in general and Era Ero prisoners, the nearest colleagues to your boss, after that remind Kenya of its sins. I wonder about how you think; sure there are something wrong within the supporters of the regime in the mind makeup. When you and your boss think wisely then Kenyans will respond to your calls of remembering God and repentance of sins.

  • Mr.suspy January 23, 2012

    This is for Kiflom
with all respect I would like to clarifiy one thing to u sir. I totally understand that sacntioning will not benifit the Eritrean ppl but it will be a good lesson tothe regim in Asmara. You know what century we’re at? At the moment the world is struggling with exremist groups like Al quaida in other term fighting a gainst terrorism. If you have a wind boat like Eritrea and you want to sail, make sur that you don’t sail againist the wind. Eritrea faced sanctions not because of UN but Iseays who blowed against the wind and found him self behind Alshabab. in an interview your boss Iseyas Afewerki said ” Al shabab is a legitimate opposition group seeking ground in Somalia” while the world describes Al shababa as a poison and a threat to the whole region. well what is that mean to you now? I think it is better to take a look at yourself before you judge on others.

  • tesfaldet January 23, 2012

MR T you are right the kenyans where thinking when they lie the world is going to belive them but what they did was they under estmate the UN by giving them avery funny lie abaout the eritrean use THE STAR TERCK looking air craft to deliver the arms to ALSHEBAB you know what ithink the U S A promise some hand out to KENYA & told them the world will belive them so in the mind of the kenyans they whernt thinking ther is going to be an investigation they whre thinking it is going to be like the 2009 when there was acountry from AFRICA holding the UN PRESIDENT they dont expect this
