The premature boy was born as his Eritrean mother drowned and was found by divers in the folds of her clothes

Divers searching the wreckage of a migrant boat off Sicily have discovered the body of a baby born as his mother drowned.

The premature boy, still attached to his umbilical cord, was found in the folds of the Eritrean’s clothes.

Diver Renato Sollustri said they had to fight through a wall of bodies and added: “None of us could believe it.

“We all began to cry – my mask was full of tears.

“The baby may never have seen light – only the darkness at the bottom of the sea.

“It was a horrible task.”

More than 300 drowned after their fishing boat caught fire and sank off the island of Lampedusa.

Mum and baby – known merely as 288 and 289 – will be buried in a single coffin

What a sad news .What can we do? Every day there is only bad news

  • Genet October 11, 2013

Every time I read such horrible news, I ask how could those idiots PFDJ gangs party while all of us are mourning. I know about 35 of them who attended the party of PFDJ in Atlanta suffer from identity crisis. These people believe that Eritrean citizenship was given to them by the dictator. Once he is gone they think that they will never see Eritrea again.

      Genet,
May be we should list their name these idiots here and put them to shame. If anyone know who attended this stupid occasion, please list their name. They deserve it, to say the least.

Another migrant ship capsizes off Italy; 27 dead

By STEPHEN CALLEJA and NICOLE WINFIELD, October 12, 2013 7 minutes ago

VALLETTA, Malta (AP) — For the second time in a week, a smugglers’ boat overloaded with migrants capsized in the Canal of Sicily on Friday as it made the perilous crossing from Africa to Europe. At least 27 people drowned, but 221 people were rescued in a joint Italian-Maltese operation, officials said.

Helicopters ferried the injured to Lampedusa, the Italian island that is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and the destination of choice for most smugglers’ boats leaving Tunisia or Libya. It was off Lampedusa that a migrant ship from Libya capsized Oct. 3 with some 500 people aboard. Only 155 survived.

Friday’s capsizing occurred 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Lampedusa, but in waters where Malta has search and rescue responsibilities.

The two shipwrecks were the latest grim reminder of the extreme risks that migrants and asylum-seekers often take in an effort to slip into Europe every year by boat. Facing unrest and persecution in Africa and the Middle East, many of the migrants think the Lampedusa escape route to Europe, which is barely 70 miles (113 kilometers) from northern Africa, is worth the risk.

“They do know that they are risking their lives, but it is a rational decision,” said Maurizio Albahari, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Notre Dame. “Because they know for a fact they will be facing death or persecution at home — whatever remains of their home, or assuming there is a home in the first place.”

What drives them is the hope that they’ll have a better life in Europe for themselves and their children, he said. “It’s either perish or go somewhere.”

I can not stop crying. This happened because of our collective passivity. We had and have the opportunity to help our people but we failed.
Our priority isn’t the people of Eritrea it is our ego.

For years the loss of life on route to Europe from the African continent is not a new episode though not to the extent it has reached now. Some section of Eritreans have chosen not to say a word about it. To our amazement, any discussion about current issues of interest in areas of politics, social or cultural can be interprated contrary to existing truth on the ground. Some have very little tresh hold for tolerance to entertain different view points. This has become a habit and as a result very little involvement is seen by many who want to involve and work for change. For no apparent reason the culture of defaming has become a tool most often used to break the morale of individuals or groups. These undemocratic forces come up with ‘pure lies’ substituting facts and truths with fabricated stories and other believe them too. Lack of consciousness is another weakness as well. Individuals who purposely spread lies must be confronted and if possible be positively convinced to join the group with convincing points. If individuals are attacked for their view points they began to be less and less interested in what goes on. Then beginning to go on with their own life and indifference sets in. Eritreans must develop the habit of paying attention to what goes on in their country and surroundings. The passivity which is seen among us choosing not to talk about issues let alone come together to do something concretely is still very strong.
We are far too docile to react to incidents or issues of concern as if it is not our business. Now, we are seeing the results and are paying for what we have become.
The statistics of the dead at sea or the deserts of Sinai is staggering. What happened to our own people in the Mediteranean just now is very sad. Even the unborn child in his mother’s womb was convicted to die with out seeing the light of day. That is the most tragic story I have heard. Let us save our nation with its population by standing for truth. A warning for Eriteans: It is no more business as usual and the tragedy in Lampedusa could be the last warning bell rang to us all.

Iseyas afewerki is responsible for this tragic and massive loss of life . The international court must bring this murderer to justice . This evil man must face justice. This dictator is a secretive killer in Eritrea too .
