Eritrean police have arrested 32 Christians in the country’s capital, Asmara, this month, including a newly married couple and 10 of their guests, according to World Watch Monitor (WWM).

Twenty were arrested last Sunday, March 25, all of whom remain in detention, WWM said.

The newly married man and two of his guests are reportedly being held in a prison north of the city.

The newlyweds and 10 guests were arrested at the couple’s home on March 5, a local source told WWM.

Ten friends were reportedly visiting the couple for a traditional coffee ceremony to welcome the bride when the local security officers forced their way into the house and arrested all 12 people there and took them to a police station.

The authorities released eight of the group two days later, after they presented valid travel IDs.

But WWM said that the four remaining Christians, including the newlyweds, were moved to Adi Abeito Prison, north of Asmara. A source told WWM that the newlywed couple was split up after the arrest and the bride was released on Tuesday (March 29).

The UN Human Rights Council recently condemned Eritrea’s human rights record. Kate Gilmore, the UN’s Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that over 100 people were arrested in Eritrea in 2017 for practising religions not officially recognised by the state.

Meanwhile, a monitoring group for the UN, United Nations Watch, said ‘thousands’ of Christians are also facing detention as ‘religious freedom continue[s] to be denied in Eritrea’.

Eritrea is sixth on Open Doors International’s 2018 World Watch List of the 50 countries in which it is most difficult to live as a Christian.

In 2002, the government introduced a law prohibiting Christian practice outside the Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical Lutheran denominations, as well as Sunni Islam.

Forget practicing Christianity,it is a place where humanity is not allowed to live, but only exist and that is if the habitat permits. It is a terrestrial inferno where everybody is looking for a way out except the Lucifer and his devils. Even-though the world community turned its back to the people of this poor country, the Lord have something in store for it.

Ethiopian peaceful peoples revolution that forced weyane to shrink to its real size came out of the blue when it was least expected after arab spring was mostly extingushed or aborted or ended in stalmate. The reason why it did happen is clear. Repression. So long a society is oppressed, they will rise against the authority. No question this will happen in our eritrea too. These old monsters will whither away in few days when that happens and every body will be surprised by its speed. To the newly wed couples, the old shefatus are sadists and will be very unhappy when they see us happy. We will force them swallow the bitter truth that they are the bottom of the bottom.

The news says 32 Christians arrested……
    Mewaxioo yefterelom.
But I have a question here – do these people call themselves just Christians only? If not, what is the missing word?

    • amanuel March 31, 2018

The word christian includes all those who believe in jesus christ as a saviour. Orthodox, catholic, pente, etc. Do not try spliting hair.
The point here is an illegal, illegitimate and thugish gang group incarcerating pure citizens for no reason. The name for that is terrorism. The perpetrator terrorist.

  • Behane March 30, 2018

They call themselves “Christians” only because they consider themselves as the only Christians. According to them the others such as Orthodox, Catholics and traditional protestants are not christians.

    • amanuel March 31, 2018

      Simply trash and a lie.

  • meretse March 30, 2018

Thank you brother Bethany for your detailed information. Now I know the word true before Christian is missing then. In this this religion must the newest and most progressive one.
A friend of mine also told me this morning –they have very young prophets who almost their gods language. This is enough for now. I will explain later my response to him

  • meretse March 30, 2018

Pls add : in this case
….who almost talk their gods language

    • Simon G. March 30, 2018

To make it clear, they call themselves Christian and we call them Pente 🙂
That used to annoy me but now I figured it out…በዓል ሓዲሽ መተር ኣስ ኣብ መገዲ ይትር ኣስ ድዮም ዝበሉ ሓቀይ?
However, whatever they believe, that shouldn’t qualify them to straight to prison. If you believe none, you are ok, but if you believe in God, you go to prison. What kind of system is this but we all know how HGDF thinks (or should I say how they DON’T think).

      • amanuel March 31, 2018

If you believe none, you are ok.? No. It does not matter what you believe in. If you do not do and say what the thugs want you to they make you rot in containers. You have to be thug like them to fair well. we have christians (orthe, cathe, pente, kenie, johie) all in prison. Why? Simple. No one should organize. That is a threat to his and his thugish group aka shefatu usubat shaebia.

  • Danilo March 30, 2018

    ሓው Simon G,

Subject: “Newlyweds among 32 Christians arrested in Eritrea in fresh crackdown” March 30, 2018

    Commentary, 30 Mar 2018
Who ever thought “liberated” Eritrea would ever turn out like this? Speaking for myself, I never thought – in my wildest dream – that Eritrea would ever be a savage country. Obviously, I do not have any trace of insightfulness to see beneath the veneer of the physical thing that I see/read in front of me on the screen. Obviously, ALL the education and practical experience in Life that I had accumulated with pride and confidence is really nothing more than artificial veneer, just bellow my skin. I was a zombie who was following the drumbeats. I jump with the crowd, I laugh with the crowed, I even insult [Oh! Lord, Forgive me] others with the crowed, and I am aware of admirable and gallant others who sacrificed their own natural gift – LIVES – without questioning for what they perceived to be the noble struggle for Liberty, Freedom and Equality. They gave everything they had, without the slightest hesitation. It never occurred to them that their comrades would ever betray them. In my case, in my simplicity, in my naivety, and absolute idiocy I thought Eritrea was special that human weakness and treachery do NOT touch my Eritrea!!! Eritrea was special in Africa – so I was told and believed. I see it now – like a dog barking after the event – that the Eritrean people were the most innocent victims of two devilish protagonists who were scheming for their own respective long hatched agenda.
What amazes me is the fact that there are still Eritreans who preach from the safety of their private Life, far, far, far away from the “fire”, that Eritrea must keep on fighting, killing, destroying – presumably to the last Eritrean. It is mass suicide. The perpetrator don’t care. They are not PERSONALLY involved and affected by the exodus and vanishing of Eritreans around the Globe. They are only good for slighting, insulting, denigrating, and inciting ordinary people in the Internet and keep on going with their parochial pettiness.
When ‘newlyweds‘ are snatched from their wedding ceremony (I assume) and taken to prison, then, to me, it is the END of civility; the END of Eritrea. The gallantry, the heroism during the thirty years of war and countless sacrifices by innocent, gallant young human beings has come down to nothing!!! . And the perpetrators with their enablers (still to this Day) are ‘scotch free’, without a scratch of guilty feeling. No wonder the smart alecks have been doing, and still doing, the silent preparation to secure their age-old properties in the old so-equated as ‘colonial’ country i.e. Ethiopia!!! It is the irony of irony that Ethiopia – THE ENEMY COUNTRY – has become: a) the sanctuary of Eritrean refugees; b) the silent source of business activities by Eritreans; and c) even a source of free education at the top most university of the country for Eritreans!!! Amazing, how things turn around. There are those who have a change of heart and are open in their advance preparation for ‘resumed Life’ in the old ‘enemy’ country. There is (I think) Amharic saying: “መኖር ደጉ፤ ሁሉን ያሳያል።” Addio ERITREA, not arrivederci but goodbye.
Post Script May I be the 64th Eritrean [in the Internet – http://www.archive.assenna.com] to congratulate Ethiopia, with solemn candour, for the peaceful and democratic election of the soon to be the youngest new Oromo Prime Minster – in a country where the majority NEVER had the opportunity to ‘play’ significant role in their country, with their own name Oromo rather than the derogatory term Galla. And how did the change come about? I leave it to Historians. It is surreal.
