WISHFUL MESSAGE: MAY THE NEW YEAR 2019 BE THE YEAR FOR ERITREA’s ‘RENAISSACANCE’, EMANICIPATING ITSELF FROM ITS OWN INTERNAL SELF-DESTRUCTIVE PAROCHIAL BELIEF AND INSTEAD ALIGN ITSELF TO ENLIGHTMENT AND GREATNESS

Commentary, 1 January 2019

 1. Preamble:

Eritreans undertook a LIBERATION WAR to have an INDEPENDENT, FREE, SOVEREIGN, COUNTRY.  Eritreans of all walks of Life and Age volunteered to sacrifice their DEAR LIFE to attaint that noble objective. A period of thirty (30) years elapsed, with horrendous sacrifice, before that objective was fully met. Alas!  the objective came with unexpected, most deadly, ‘appendicitis’ that must be removed, if the objective of the thirty-year war was to be maintained and honoured.

And yet, after twenty-seven (27) years [i.e. almost equal to the liberation struggle] Eritrea is still struggling – this time in the removal of an indigenous ‘appendix’.   Does Eritrea have qualified and willing ‘Doctoral Experts’ to undertake the planning and execution of the operation needed to physically remove the cancerous element from the internal body of Eritrea?  Unfortunately, the last twenty-seven-year period does not give us the confidence to expect a bright future.  Ahhh…. What a luck!!! There must be something mysterious! But, in all honesty, Eritreans DO NOT deserve such a cockeyed luck. Do WE?!?!  Or, is there something of a FLAW in our characteristic or COMPOSITION of the society? Just a question. Let us NOT be afraid to question ourselves for our own benefit.  Please keep on reading with accommodating — as well as CRITICAL — attitude for the benefit of Eritrea as a whole — not upon fragmented secretive pieces, based on religion, region and other toxic sociological poisons. At the end, we will be exhausted playing ‘cat and mouse’ and would, eventually, be forced to be daringly honest to ourselves and call ‘a spade a spade’, regardless of the consequences.  Anyway, for the moment, let us continue reading.

2.       Discussion: Realm of possibility

Now, in the beginning of the NEW YEAR – 2019, let us proceed to hypothetical questions for consideration.

a)       What if Issayas Afwerki Abraha, all of a sudden, disappears?

b)       What would be the reaction of the Eritrean People?

c)       Will Eritreans consider themselves as ONE entity and utilizing the opportunity to SAVE themselves from the gutter of History?

The conjecture about Issayas’ disappearance is not new.  He has done it before and paralyzed the entire population of Eritrea for a period of thirty (30) days.  No group would dare take any action. The Nation was in the ‘rat hole’, waiting for someone to take action.  As it turned out, Issayas came out from his hiding place, having accomplished what he set out to accomplish (i.e. testing the loyalty of those around him and beyond). Consequently, he has done some ‘polishing’ upon unfaithful followers, and continued with his dictatorial domination.

He repeated it again in a different format: This time a young man was the actor.  In broad day light, the young man took over a radio station at FORTO demanding some sort of meager improvement. It didn’t last long; and the man tried to escape but soon was captured and the whole thing came to an end.  It is reasonable to suspect that the whole thing was Issayas’ scheme. The poor, innocent, honest chap (Footnote 1) was a set-up to be the sacrificial lamb. The process enabled Issayas [i.e. as he planned it] to clean the political environment.  No doubt, a segment of readers will disagree with this interpretation of the set-up – and even get angry for denying them the heroism of their dear compatriot.  It is understandable. The enticement to a wishful thinking, as a daring revolutionary action, was immense.  And we are all striving – in our dreams — to have Liberty, Freedom of Expression, Democratic environment etc. in our Eritrea. Aren’t we?  Have we not been struggling in our minds for that eventuality, for time immemorial?   Or, do we have inherent weakness against success?!?

Now, let us elongate the period of experimental disappearance by Issayas to ninety (90) days. What will happen in Eritrea? Dear Readers: Do you HONESTLY believe that there will be a COHESIVE uprising in Asmara – Eritrea during the ninety-day period? If you believe it, just relax and keep on counting the days, silently without sharing your anxiety with your neighbours as you have no idea who they might be — in the land that turned-out to be infested by informers!!! Let us NOT pretend to be shocked: Issayas wouldn’t survive a month without ‘hearing aids’ around him and beyond (Footnote 2).  Anyway, when the ninety-day period is over – and Issayas, once again, pops out from the dark clouds – you will, naturally, be happy for not divulging anything to anyone, thus escaping from the penalty of public hanging in the market place >>>similar to the savagery of Derg of Ethiopia in Keren, Eritrea.

3.       Absolute necessity for Action

If it is considered an absolute necessity to galvanize a group that would lead Eritrea to democratic system., we should be able to answer the following questions:

a)      Is there a cohesive Eritrean Group, outside Eritrea, who can automatically take the opportunity to liberate Eritrea?

b)      Does such a Group have the necessary educational foundation, far sightedness, experience and qualification on international level to carry the PLAN to its fruition?

c)        Will the Group be immune to the cancerous disease of religion, region and other parochial obstacles?  NOTE: NEVER forget:  Issayas used these factors to the maximum for his destructive diabolical success. Without that instrument, as one of his University colleagues put it crisply, Issayas ‘would have abandoned the Ghedli a long time ago and be back to Addis Ababa’.

d)      Will such a Group be capable to have a ‘blue print’ for the take-over of the government?

e)      Will such a Group have experience and far sightedness to include in their ‘blue print’ all the necessary governmental transitory to the ultimate constitutional democratic Eritrea?

4.       Conclusion

Needless to say, in the case of negative response to the above questions, Eritrea will keep on existing [though not LIVING] as it has been for the last one hundred and thirty (130) years under the domination of various colonial forces; or under a brutal government of indigenous dictator; or perhaps, this time, abandoning Eritrea all together in favour of exodus to Ethiopia while the Ethiopians anxiously flooding into Eritrea!!! It is a silent operation, replacing an ugly war. All done without a single shot fired.  What it all means is a simple and tragic ending:   Eritreans, after horrendous sacrifice, forfeiting their beloved Eritrea to the enemy country of ‘YESTERYEARS’, accepting the ultimate reality of truth that Eritreans are NOT capable of forging UNITED Eritrea, neither in war times; nor in peaceful times. It is a classical case of TRAGEDY. WE ERITREANS CANNOT HELP IT >>> IT SEEMS TO BE IN OUR NATURE. I accept (quietly) any reaction of insults from certain Readers to their hearts’ content, if it brings back the DREAM of Eritrea to REALITY.

Dear Eritrean Reader: The following is exclusively for Eritreans. It is a little anecdote of interest to us. It has to do with our admirable, resourceful, hero, conniving, mysterious ወዲ ኣፎም።  Here I go:  After ‘Liberation’, one of the tasks of Eritrea was to be a member of the African Union (AU).  Issayas Afewerki Abraha attended an Annual Conference of the AU. When his turn was up for him to take the podium, he had three arrows of deadly questions/statement:                                                                                                                                                          a) what did you do for us in time of our needs?                                                                                                                   b) What have you ever achieved in the Life of the African Union?

c) The African Union is a useless Organization.

What a daring declaration! Please do not challenge me, word by word, with the story.  Whether we like it or not, Issayas’ remark was brilliant and quietly admired by so many.  The Honourable members at the Conference were speechless (though angry to be lectured by a young fighter) not because of the accuracy and crisp labelling on the African Leaders but for a novice member of the Club to be bold enough to REVEAL THEIR TRUE NATURE, OPENLY to the world. Issayas was, and still is, a formidable Actor who can portray ANY POSTURE for any occasion.

Now, let us flip the other side of ወዲ ኣፎም። Please bear the agony. Here is what he did, in 27-year period of time, to the innocent, trusting, emotional, gallant people of Eritrea:

a) He has done nothing to re-construct Eritrea;                                                                                                                   b) He, deliberately, let Eritrea rot;                                                                                                                                        c) In fact, he destroyed Eritrea with ferocious appetite; and                                                                                                  d) He demonstrated his devilish desire [ከርእየክን እዬ] to mince Eritrea into non-existence, for ever.

Needless to say, the above narration hurts deeply but it is even perpetually agonizing to realize that it REMAINS as one of OUR UGLY HISTORY, for ever.  WE WILL BE KNOWN, FOR EVER, AS THE HONEST EMOTIONAL PEOPLE ON EARTH WHO ARE DETERMINED TO FLOG THYSELVES FOR ETERNITY  Be that as it may, I do not wish to finish my mini-dissertation with a sour conclusion on our affairs. Instead, I wish to rest my hope upon Eritrean Groups around the Globe — for example, those in Norway, UK, Canada, USA. They could align and focus on their respective work to the common URGENT OBJECTIVE of LIBERATING Eritrea i.e. this time against indigenous colonizer.  The Group need not disband after the accomplishment of the SINGULAR URGENT TASK but would continue with their respective sociological work in their adopted countries – similar to the undertakings of other citizens from around the Globe.  THE END

———————————————————————–

Footnote:

(1) The fellow is well known to Issayas from the days of Assab war facing Ethiopian army. Issayas has a cunning memory of those who defy his order.

(2) I am aware of the hurtful feeling by reminding Readers of our innocence and down to earth foolishness. Didn’t WE ALL applaud ‘yesterday’, elevating ወዲ ኣፎም ኮርዒዳ to the highest pedestal, just a notch down below GOD!!!  Shame on us! Pathetic on our wild emotion! Aren’t we now re-displaying our legendary emotion affecting our FUTURE?  Let us be honest:  Instead of concentrating on the ONLY, and ONLY, cardinal matter, which is “THE INTENSE FOCUSING ON ERITREA”, we are wasting our future, deliberately by dwelling, debating, insulting each other on, and about, our neighbours and beyond.  The ‘hidden’ sociological reasoning is obvious – as the Tigrigna farsightedness goes: ዘረባ የብሉን። Correct me, if I used it incorrectly. There is a VERY SAD historical and psychological fact, destroying an entire society in every sense of the term ‘destruction”.

The article has a tone of self fulfilling prophecy at the same time a subtle aggrandizing of the tyrant,it is just what the immediate gut feeling it evokes in me,nothing personal rezen, thanks to those who give us this platform. To me the “central character” in the article and our home land situation can be summed up with an old tigrigna saying >>> “AB ADI UWURAT HADE AYNU YINEGS” nothing more nothing less. You want to judge the character, look at the outcome,he doesn’t come from planet Krypton,he ain’t no Italiano either,he is African like the rest of his AU brothers he belittles and he is doing the same like most of them do to their respective citizens- deprive them of a decent livelihood. Our succulent lunch date is still on my friend.

  • Woldegabriel January 11, 2019

It is ominous disbelief that I read your article of self-loath. Supplanted on people of great pride and history. Had you read history, you would have learned that Eritreans were able to maintain and protect their identity, culture, language, history over hundreds of years of colonization. This is a simple litmus test of the inner strength of the people. Trying to assess Eritreans from s parochial standpoint is reminiscent if your faulty thinking process. First, isayas has surrounded himself with weak, subservient, corrupt and criminals who would not even tie their shoe laces without his permission. Whether he is out for 30, 90 or,360 days, they could not do anything. They are impotent. No sane Eritrran expects any change from these generals or ministers. Second, you are a victim of the well-oiled Amhara chauvinists propaganda. To exorcise themselves from the-then looming fear of Eritreans, the Amhara’s always used to propagate that “Eritreans do not get along with each other”. (Eritreanoch aysmamum- Eritrawiyan nrnhidhidom sykadewun Eyom). Fortunately, our wise fathers used to say – ” insult a foolish man once, he will continue to insult himself for eternity. (N’ Ashas hansab Xirefo Zelealem nebsu kixerf ynebr). That is what you are doing. I really don’t want to go to details, but if you are mesmerized with esayas and his new friends- the Amhara’s, you can extol them as you wish. But for heaven’s sake don’t insult people you don’t know at all

  • Tes January 14, 2019

    Dear Rezen,

Great stuff. You elaborate current Eritrea and the current situation and affair. of Eritrea. You said that

” .under a brutal government of indigenous dictator; or perhaps, this time, abandoning Eritrea all together in favour of exodus to Ethiopia while the Ethiopians anxiously flooding into Eritrea!!! It is a silent operation, replacing an ugly war. All done without a single shot fired” I agree with you on this.

For me this is the most scary part of the current affair the intensity of the exodus and the replacement of inflow from Ethiopia. I am from a farming family in Eritrea from a small village. From that active vibrant village the settlers were all flee and there is no one left there as we speak. That village was existed many colonizers for thousand years but could not stand against home grown dictators. Its chance of revival is unthinkable. Those who are alive and flee to safe place or third country are unlikely to return to the village. That village is history now and there are many other villages in Eritrea under the same fate. .

“I wish to rest my hope upon Eritrean Groups around the Globe — for example, those in Norway, UK, Canada, USA. They could align and focus on their respective work to the common URGENT OBJECTIVE of LIBERATING Eritrea i.e. this time against indigenous colonizer.”

You put your hope on the diaspora. I wish I have your optimism but the people in diaspora can not bring change and unlikely to return home. Once you are out it is hard to go back to build a country from bottom up. Yes in diaspora there are some cyber warriors like Eritrea First or Eritrea lovers from distance who have none or little connection in Eritrea. There knowledge of Eritrea is minimal and don’t mislead by their loud cry.

    Happy new year Rezen

  • Tsehaye January 15, 2019

    Kibur haw Rezen,
I too agree and admire your excellent article, sorry for my late comment and post. Indeed, keep it up brother.

  • Genet-Original January 16, 2019

    Dear Rezen
You raised good questions. One of the question that you ask: What would happen, if DIA just disappear from our society.?I say, It might get worst, than it is now. Because DIA cultivated cult followers Eritreans and Eritreans with identity crisis who had been attached their Eritrean-sim to DIA’s existent. I am going to shield myself with your advice of “let us not be afraid to question of flow in our characteristic”Thank you! Even now, DIA has lost the never swayed respect from his die hard supporters, we have people who claim to be justice seeker attacking Eritreans for saying, Let us say, ERITREAN FIRST! Isn’t it the issue of not putting Eritreans people and the country first lead to the current state of our people? You said, “Emancipating itself from its own internal self distinctive parochial belief and instead align itself to enlightenment and greatness” If we aren’t free to discuss the flow of our characteristic, this is going to remain wishful. Every Eritrean knows, we have been talking about the flow of religion and region, but never identity crisis issue. Even when we all know that DIA have been surrounded himself with 50 to 100% Ethiopians, we are afraid to discuss this crisis which is holding us hostage. DIA is also suffering from this disorder. Correct me, if I am wrong, but I believe the “Parochial obstacles” you mentioned is to refer to the cancer of identity crisis. By the way it is beginning to rare its ugly head in different shapes and forms. By the way, I do understand your point about the “parochial obstacles” you are pointing the blame at the Eritreans who are saying, where is this identity crisis coming from?, not the practitioners of the crisis. That is part of the problem. Why can’t we confront anything and everything that are obstacles to our unity and survival? Why can’t we confront the people who aren’t Eritreans by heart? why can’t we confront the people who are against putting the Eritreans people and Eritrea first? What are they afraid of?

“Let us not be afraid to question of flow in our characteristic” (Rezen)
If we call a spade a spade and clean house, Eritrea will start living with splash of color!!

    ERITREA FIRST !!!!! . .

If you get a chance read the story of Teka in Awate .com,those Ethiopians who germinated in Eritrea, born and bred among us,who know us very well, grew up with us,speak walk and talk like us,friends, schoolmates, neighbors…….but eventually rutted and spied on us and even hunted us down, dedicated unionist(Ethiopians) the tyrant being one of them>>>>>you getting the picture, those are his base today, that is the Eritrea he manufactured by displacing us the ORIGINALES,I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but you can’t identify with Eritrean nationalism by draping yourself with Ethiopian version colors which the tyrant hatched from his pocket, remain Eritrean true blue with the scent of olive branches, that is where our national consciousness germinated,no double dipping, nothing against the proud Ethiopians and the historical relationship we have with them, but we are Eritreans one nation under God/Allah indivisible, sovereign and we damn paid heavy price for that,On that note I proudly say Eritrea first and foremost!!

    • Genet -Original January 17, 2019

      Thanks K.t
I am not aware of Teka’s story, but I will read it.
“No double dipping” is the clear message to all those closeted unionist and for those who want to use the dead issue of “Tigray-Tigrinya” as a safety net, or when facing the backlash from their own people in Ethiopia. Or when Ethiopia is becoming inconvenience for their livelihood. The people who identify with Ethiopians/Tigray and clearly want to keep Eritrea as a weak second home, must to be challenged. For those Eritreans, who accepted the fact that they have no home to call, except independent ERITREA, need to get out of the foggy state of mind and stop the suffering of our people. We Eritreans, are tired of the fear of being accused of talking Eritrean nationalism. My question to my fellow Eritreans is aren’t we people with an independent country called Eritrea? Why do we have to deal with people who are having identity crisis for a reason of being super selfish? It is time to stop sending compounded and confusing message to our people. We are tired of being put second to any cry babies who are trying to continue the manipulative act of double dipping. We Eritreans are fade up of this issue and we are starting to find a way to expose those people for exactly who they are. If anyone doesn’t want to remain an Eritrean for better or worst then he/she must go to where he/she feels comfortable. Otherwise they can’t drag us to their confused state of mind. Finally we are saying it is Enough!!!

      ERITREA FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • k.tewolde January 17, 2019

“If anyone doesn’t want to remain an Eritrean for better or worst then he/she must go to where he/she feels comfortable.” indeed G.O.>>>>don’t muddy up the water or pollute the air, the Eritrean spring is crystal clear and the air downy fresh come join swim and smell the crisp air with us but you have to wash away your debris before you come in,you can’t have the best of both worlds, you can’ t have your cake and eat it too,you can’t double dip,you are either with us or against us,your dual shady character have reeked havoc upon us for years, enough!! Eritrea first!!

          K.t
Thanks for the referral to read the story of an Ethiopian man named Teka. His mother is from Tigray Ethiopia and his father from Amhara Ethiopia. He tells a very one sided story of war between Eritrea and Ethiopia. He was born and raised in Asmara Eritrea who has no love for the people of Eritrea. He compared the deportation of defeated Derg military personal with civilians Ethiopians -Eritrean origin. More than 70,000 people, women, children, sick and the elderly were displaced inhumanly from all over Ethiopia by the woyane. The reason was stated by the late PM from Tigray, “if we don’t like their eye colors, we will deport them from our country”. Any way, this man also stated that his mother is from Tigray who lived in Eritrea who was married an Amhara man, went on to work for the woyane gov in Ethiopia. So, This guy conveniently skip the past 27 years of events for the most part.

One thing I appreciate about his stand is he stated he is proud Ethiopian. I think Eritreans need to read his story. It will help us understand the Tigrra people mentality. It will help us to clear the murky mindset they show time after time toward the Eritrean people and our country. Don’t give me wrong I don’t have any animosity toward Tigray/Ethiopian people. I just want them to stop hurting our people and our cause. The Eritrean people don’t have the privilege of gambling between two identity and/
or countries. As you rightly stated K.t, “you can’t have your cake and eat it too” Exactly! Enough!!
          Eritrea first!!!!!

We Eritreans have plenty of educated, capable, determined and dedicated Eritreans to step in and take control of the safety of our people and country. All we have to do is to believe in ourselves. No matter what, we have to start as ERITREANS FIRST AND MOST.

    ERITREA FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aye ieza bado slogan Eritrea First! What is amazing about this group is they were the least contributors to the liberation of Eritrea and they are the least victim of the current situation of Eritrea. Of course , they are louder in social media but when it comes to do the walk they are the ones no where to be seen. They have no shame to give and take citizenship as if Eritrea is their grandma’s garden. Who is the right owner of Eritrea, we will leave it to time.

K Tewelde ! what I low life guy! In awate.com I guy with a name of TEKA wrote an article about his life in Eritrea. He didn’t interfere with Eritrea affair nor did he said bad about Eritrea. He simply reflect his childhood and try to explain the ugly side of war. K Tewelde came with that crap idea that there are many Ethiopians or to be specific Tegaru among us who interfere in our discussion. What a shallow fool old man. My advise to you is be a man than following GO & Kikki and sing nonsense Eritrea First with out any action. Oh I forgot you’re one of those long ago tried but ran away not to return. Because you said Eritrea First doesn’t make you more Eritrean or give you a mandate to give and take citizenship.

No one in right mind want see Eritrea in the current situation but we failed miserably to sort it out. In reality we don’t even have the Eritrea as such. Yes we have flag and can be considered as independent country . But in reality Eritrea owned by one person. Today press conference of Dr Abey ( Abyot) and Italian PM shows who is the boss of Eritrea. They had interned in to agreement to construct train rail from Massawa to Addis and Eritrea was not there even to witness. K Tewelde where is the Eritrea First? so F … your nonsense and seek other means to salvage what ever is remained in Eritrea.

Tes you have a lazy eye ,you can’t even spell my name right forget refuting our contribution to the Eritrean cause, one thing is for sure, you can’t duplicate us originales. “salvage what ever is remained in Eritrea.,”>>you damn right about that, you did pretty good job dismantling the little place to a bare minimum.Unlike you,Teka is an example of Ethiopian patriotism, what are you!? a mixed bag of broccoli and cheese? identify yourself and be proud of it.No double dipping pal,you can’t say “Abyot” and say Sewra at the same time.Eritrea first!!!

        K.t
When people are preoccupied with how they feel about any given subject, they tend to internalize a situation and they can’t accept other peoples concern. If you read Tes’s posting, what you find is the cry of “You are calling me agama” For that reason the whole country (Eritrea ) or its people can go to hell. This message is usually hidden in a plain sight. People like Tes, won’t give the Eritrean people the credit they rightfully deserve for welcoming their neighbors at the time of hardship. At one of his schizophrenic post, he said his family “settled in one of Eritreans village thousands years ago” and now the supposedly “settlers village” is gone. After saying that he offer no initiative to empower the “settlers” country Eritrea. In fact, he is mad about the the message of Eritrea First. Why? because it exacerbate the dormant illness of identity crisis.

What Tes and co. are saying is die, Eritrea, die! Eritrea die quickly! SO they can have relief from symptoms of identity crisis.
Why does Tes hate the message of Eritrea first? I don’t know for sure, but I think it is FEAR. Fear of what? God knows.

I want to explain one thing to Tes and co. The impact of standing by the ERITREA FIRST message is to unite all Eritreans. It is very small way to have some common ground. As we all know Eritreans had lost our way long time ago. ERITREA FIRST can help us to go back to our base of loving our people and country. It will help us to be selfless; It will help us to forgive each others; It will help us to see what other Eritreans are able to see, when we can’t; It will help us to see the wrong from right; We want our people to help each other; ERITREA FIRST can help us to resurrect the Eritrean common decency.

        ERITREA FIRST!!!!!!!

  • Tes January 22, 2019

Chill out mate! as for your name I am afraid you are the one misspell it haha… in my village in Eritrea we call Tewelde not Tewolde but no problem I will take a note for next time. FYI . Abyot is the original name of Dr Abey given as a child and when he grow up.with that name. He recently changed to Abey …..anyway I am glad you are back to your sense now. at-least you are not calling me intruder. I don’t mind if you consider me unpatriotic as it doesn’t value at all.
