The Afwerkist I

By Fetsum Abraham/ 3/4/2013

DEDICATION: I dedicate this article to brothers and sisters (Afwerkists) conditioned to remain victims of humiliation and manipulation by the super master of dictatorship

Quote of the day: The mind can change life if it overcomes inhibition like fear can steal existence if allowed to control the mind.

triple -surprise

Narrative

Apparently, the first two decades of the Eritrean experience after independence or the first independent political experience of the society has unexpectedly introduced a unique absolutist political philosophy called Afwerkism. The world’s expectation from the Eritrean struggle on the issues of UNITY, FREEDOM and JUSTICE was contradicted by the concrete reality of DIVISION, DICTATORSHIP and LAWLESSNESS, in one of the most surprising and tragic socio-political paradigm shifts experienced by the human race.

In short, the Eritrean concept of freedom has been completely compromised by an exceptional version of absolute autocracy currently rated as the only and the worst type of its type in the world.

In the progression, a group of mentally and morally challenged people called Afwerkists who unconditionally support the philosopher has emerged, to the double-surprise of the society; raising the question whether the culture was misunderstood to have been otherwise, when it was realistically a favorably mushrooming ground for such a self-degrading and down-beat mentality to begin with. Afwerki as a lone father of Awferkism could not have survived in Eritrea had our society been as decent as we thought it to have been! He would have been isolated easily long time ago but the existence of many Eritreans who are silently allowing the destruction of their country under this philosophy, despite all the evidence on the open discloses the contemplation that our society may be submissive by cultural orientation, although patriotic by nationalism. In other words, nationalistic patriotism could have camouflaged the denial and submissive contents of our culture for a very long time.

Personally, I had never thought the Eritrean society specially the educated including me would take this amount of punishment from one man for this long with substantial pretension and unhealthy silence. He delivered and we took it quietly; did it again and we did our taking loyally; and continues to do it in persistent style and we keep taking it in similar fashion. It was simply too much to sustain: Few of us might have freed ourselves from the chain of Afwerkism finally enjoying our freedom of speech in the developed countries, but quiet a few of us are still taking the merciless whipping without a say.

Back in the days, the intensity of intellectual involvement in the struggle for independence was extraordinary, while it is at ridiculously minimum in this rough journey for freedom. Chances are fear, trauma, confidence, opportunism, negativity, low self-esteem and many other psychological issues play a big role in the psychology of an Afwerkist, but what is the resultant psychological problem that reduces the educated member of the society to this mind-numbing level of quietism? Why is there insignificant participation of the educated Eritreans to direct the young Eritrean generation condemned to ignorance by Afwerkism? Who should then carry the responsibility of saving the nation in the presence of an uneducated generation in exodus? Why did the potent energy of the educated class during the struggle disappear in the struggle of the society for democracy and justice? Was the goal of the struggle only to liberate Eritrea or to secure freedom and justice in the country as well? Is this class of the society satisfied by the most savage dictatorship in the country or denying this reality through silence?

Do we have a subtle problem in general that we need to search together? Do we have a problem in the culture it self?

Excuse my AMICHE but I stand over-surprised: Quiet a few Eritreans exposed to the west are still supporting the destruction of Afwerkism in Eritrea after the county’s very long struggle for freedom. My confusion may then have originated from my superficial understanding of our culture so to say; but this Quietism happened to be a triple-surprise to my commonsense! Does this make sense, at least controversially?

The question is who is Afwerkist?

An Afwerkist is a low self-esteemed person conditioned to accept animalistic mode of existence by means of persistent humiliation from the architect of Afwerkism. Similar to the philosopher, an Afwerist has no concept of human value, justice and freedom; does anything to prove his uselessness to the philosopher of his/her humiliation. An Afwerkist is a feeling-less individual who accepts humiliation as a perception of existence; a mindless person, who completely surrenders his/her concept of thinking to the master; a person who by some psychological or circumstantial excuse accepted the status of an object vis-à-vis life it self: One who has a problem to exist without an abusive master and that cannot learn from the consequence of his uselessness on society and on the self.

An Afwerkist is either an innocent victim of Afwerkism or a deliberate follower of the same. Either way the two converge at one point of spiritual decay: no compassion to the suffering of others and no sense of freedom what so ever.

And who is the queitist?

The quietist is a conscious individual who knows the society is in serious trouble; yet chooses to stay quiet for many reasons (at least fear and opportunism). A quietist applies the ENTAIGEDESENI mentality through which he/she accentuates fear and opportunism. In comparison, the quietist is more destructive than the unconscious Afwerkist because he/she is aware of the problem. A quietist hurts the society twice as much: by failing his/her responsibility to educate and guide the youth to freedom and by indirectly elongating the life of Afwerkism as a result. What do you think?

Fetsum, keep them coming.. nice article. Ghedli generation brought the independence and I think alot of Eritrean(including myself) just assumed or believed the Ghedli generation was going to bring that same energy to transform Eritrea into glowing Nation. How can a leaders who sacraficed so much and spent 70% of their life in battlefield transformation their own country into a prison and refugee producing state. We or I forgot about human nature.

You ask a good question, who is the Afwerkist and your profile is fairly accurate.
A writer by name of Eric Hoffer has good book(true believers) that provides a good profile of totalitarian system like Afwerkist and its follower.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_True_Believer

In terms of revolution in Eritrea, Eric has a good observation..

“It is not actual suffering but the taste of better things which excites people to revolt.”

We got to give Eritrean in Eritrea hope of better Eritrea and that we in diaspora are behind them…

    Hi fitsum ,
I like your articles because they coax ideas and discussions.
The deafening silence of the educated has been bothering many for many years. Some Eritreans who still believe in the power of knowledge have been baffled by it. I would like to shed some light on the why, not that many do not know it but just a reminder of it from probably a different corner.
The ‘mind-numbing’ silence of the educated is the result of a long systematic buttering from the system itself. The educated were told directly and indirectly that the gedli experience is more informative about EVERY ASPECT OF EVERY THING and that their education is useless or at least unecessary. The general public have been made to believe people can succeed without education. A good example is the commette of METSINTSAL of civil servants (Dr weldea was a prominent member) in 1995 which decided to equate one year of gedli with one year of education as one of their criteria. These were two incomparable things.
In schools students were encouraged to undermine and mock their teachers. Students were never encouraged to work hard but teachers were expected to promote them. University lecturers were verbally abused by the system especially by dr Weldeab. Thanks to him because of his undermining his coleagues’ education and academic capacity and poor judgement, many are stuck with one academic rank after working for so many years. This has serious professional repercussion on they academic career. He became so mean to them and, finally, sunk so low into regionalism himself. On this note, I do not want to undermine his exceptional academic capacity.
Eritrean young people needed role models in order to see the uses of education for themselves. But all they saw or see was and is the sad lives of the educated most of who are on national service payroll- educated young people who were still financially dependent on their families.
You know, as a show and final blow to the mind of the educated intelligent young, people with PhD from all sectors were sent to sawa for military training. The humiliation and hustle they got from those arrogant good-for-nothing uneducated military trainers was disturbing. Imagine the time and intellect wasted. Furthermore, when they came back from sawa they were on a national service payroll. Some, kind ones, dedicated the 145 nakfa for 18 months and then about 400 nakfa. The perception of ‘mhur tebelatsi’ was systematically and subtly installed into the mind of the people and they lost their respect for education or educated. Schools and education are only used as a hiding place from Sawa and wia.
The profession of teaching was considered ‘MEWSBO ZEKHELKL’ profession. Nobody in Eritrea wants to be a teacher! In many offices the boss or the decision-maker is less educate than his subordinates.
Basically though we cannot deny that people go into education for two reasons, at least in our country; well at least in the good old days. Some want to get good jobs and raise their status among their village people and peers and gain social respect. Some do it because they love knowledge and they just want to be more knowledgeable and more useful and in the meantime use their knowledge to have a better life. The former group are more interested in their own selfish motives more than in any other and as a result can be very dangerous and are being used by PFDJ to pinpoint the weakness of ‘educated ‘people. If these get attention and position (even powerless posts)PFDJ, you have no idea how stupid they behave and consequently have become instruments for the brutality of the system. They do not care of consequences or who they hurt. They can be embarrassment to the educated elite community of our society.
Finally, what I would like say is that, it is understandable that many educated feel left out or neglected, belittled (MHURAT ENA BEHALTI?) or maybe unwanted by both the society or by system. However, some are selfish beyond belief.
On a final note, it is HIGH TIME they use their education and intellect diplomatic and presentation skills to fight for the justice their people deserve. It is time they dedicate their skills and lead the people out of this abyss. They have moral and ethical obligation!!!!!!!
It is time also for the public to trust and involve them.

    On Afwerkism and Afwerkists:

    Dear brother Fitsum:

Your definition of Afwekism and Afwerksts is accurate. However, Afewekism emerged as philosophy and as a political system in association with the Marxist-Leninist ideology of former EPLF. We should not blame Afwerki alone as culprit of the case. Afwerki and his blind followers (Niyna-Nusu), used the leftist ideology to eliminate any independent thinking that appeared in the EPLF as well as the Eritrean society. Afwerki was ant intellectual from the onset because he knows very well they are the once will understand his opportunist intentions and consequently and inevitably oppose them. To undermine independent and critical thinking he and his followers proclaimed saying, “Our ideological principles are sacrosanct.” For this reason, any intellectual within the Front who happen to criticize any wrongdoing was labeled as “Zinbul” (reactionary).

    Dear Mihret;
U are woderfull and I am sure you can help us a lot in this educated hungry struggle. I think you can do a damage teaching many of us through articles using ur good command of English. The journey is tiresome unless we all participate and motivate each other to contribute. I hope u will do it

  • Nahom March 7, 2013

    To Dear Mihretu
I appreciate your comment and I guess you are all rounded with logical evidence rather than fake exaggeration things. And after all you are on the right truck to express the real condition of Eritrean governance with the scientific expression. And I also want to comment on you are just focusing on one man Afewrkism. I expect to bring additional issues that the leadership that forced to be dictatorship because it will be so important to come up with the cause and effect relation and to bring the right solution for the future. With this personal evaluation why do not write articles that could learn more issues of Ethiopia-Eritrea for the sake of resolution(actually it is possible but for the moment my intention is not unification). So with this personal I expect to see issues of the following, because they could be exemplary lessons learned for the future life of the horn at large.
    1. you know the right identity of Eritrean which was crises for so many people.
    2. you are also know the situation of colonies specially in relation to Italy and Ethiopia for Eritrea it was so nice when it become an Ethiopian. this was absolute fact.
    3. you may know the secret of EPLF towards Eritrea the the impossibles of the future Ethiopia Eritrea.
    4. the hidden agenda of Arab countries like Egypt , Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, qua tar, Libya Saudi etc on the struggle for Independence.
    5. the problem and the secret of honest Ethiopian who forced to withdraw from Eritrea after independence.
    Thanks
    Yours
