Veteran freedom fighter and former Director General of Telecommunications; Mr. Solomon Habtom died today 18 August 2017, in the notorious Asmara prison, known as Carchelli.

Mr. Solomon, believed to be in his late sixties, was arrested on 10 July 2003 and has been imprisoned by the dictatorial regime for 14 years without being charged or facing trial in the court of law.

When the family of Mr. Solomon Habtom learned of his death, no sufficient explanation was given to them about the cause and the circumstances of his death.

Before joining the armed struggle for Eritrea’s independence, Mr. Solomon studied at the University of Addis Ababa.  Later on, he did his further studies in Sweden. While in Sweden, he met the veteran Eritrean patriot Woldeab Woldemariam and got involved with Eritrean revolutionary activities. Soon after, he joined the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), in the early 1970s. During the armed struggle, he served in the Signal and Communications Department, where he led by example.

As many Eritrean compatriots, Mr. Solomon, whose three siblings had fallen for Eritrean independence, has become a victim of the very revolution he helped to succeed.

Mr. Solomon Habtom is survived by his wife and two children.

It just breaks my heart…..Is this how veteran tegadelty have to die. Fourteen years without charge for someone who joined the struggle in 1970. And 3 of his siblings have fallen martyrs for the same cause and one narcissist guy does whatever he wants and we all – including all tegadeltys at home just murmur possibly and do nothing. Until everyone gets his turn to the slaughterhouse. What is wrong with all of us. Shame on us all.
    RIP harbegna.

A hero died a hero. Condolences to all those grieving. The fruit of the struggle hijacked by a clique of mafia in Asmara. An entire state a huge prison for all people as young as 6 year olds!!!!!!

Another victim of the “al Thawra al Erityin” and its henchman Issaias Zedong. These sort of crimes had been committed tens of thousand times in the last 60 years in Eritrea by the mafiosi slavish leadership of Jebha-shaebia and their dogs..To make fun of their victims, the heartless slaves had been saying – al Thawra eats its own children.
May the victims of “al Thawra al Erityin” rest in peace.

Solomon Habtom was my very dear friend, who I could call on 24/7 while working in Eritrea from 1994-2000. RIP Dear Solomon.

PS Solomon died for what he believed in. That is the definition of a true hero. Not many of us will be able to say the same about ourselves when our time comes.

PPS From 1993 to 2001 Eritrea was a rising star, not only in Africa but in the world. BUT it was driven to desperation and tyranny by the betrayal of the international community, led by the Americans, for not enforcing on the Ethiopians the International Court border ruling in 2002(?) as both parties, ET and ER, had agreed. Hence the Ethiopians have spent 17 years harassing ER along its southern border, entailing endless enlistment of young men and women into the Defence Force, and (a) destruction of the economy & repression of the youth, and (b) the exodus of young Eritreans to Europe etc, and (c) the extinguishing of a rising star in Africa, which would have been on a par with Dubai if the international community, led by the Americans, had followed through on their often-stated promise/mission to spread peace and democracy throughout the world.

Americans has no obligation or even moral duty to implement the ruling. It is not their ruling. They have never implemented the un rulings anywhere in the world. Nothing to blame them, blame those who refused (the weyanes and agaminos) and their in blood brother ( iseyas) the ignorant eritrean generals who can not think beyond their belly.
