MichaelAbraha

Eritrean leader Isaias Afewerki has fastened the blame on the US for ‘organizing’ the recent Ethiopian military incursions, which he said was aimed at diverting world attention from his country’s border row with Ethiopia. In an interview over the weekend with Eritrean State TV, Isaias said the Ethiopian attack had its roots in Washington’s “failed agendas” and “wrong calculations”.  Whether his assertions are shared by the rest of the country is hard to fathom as people are not free to offer opinions and criticizing the government is unimaginable.

Whatever Isaias’s position, the Security Council simply ignored his government’s concern, which meant for the UN bending its Charter principles of the sanctity of the idea of territorial integrity of UN member states.

The Eritrean government is not helped by its isolationist, defiant behavior which has led to debilitating UN sanctions imposed on charges of fueling violence and terrorism in the Horn of Africa Region. Its miserable human rights record has also earned her no friends.

Under these circumstances, the Security Council was inclined to treat the Ethiopian incursion the same way it treated the Kenyan invasion of Somalia last October in pursuit of Al-Qada linked Al-Shabab operatives who attacked tourists inside Kenya. A UN sanctions monitoring team determined in July that both Somalia andEritrea were serving “as platforms for foreign armed groups that represent agrave and increasingly urgent threat to peace and security in the Horn and East Africa region”.

Ethiopia said it was acting in self-defense when it invaded up to 18kms into Eritrea in mid March overrunning three of its military garrisons at Gibina, Gelehibe andRamid in South Eastern Eritrea where Asmara was “arming and training…hit-and-run terrorists” such as the anti-Ethiopia Afar rebels who attacked 27 European tourists in January murdering 5 and kidnapping two others. A government statement warned of additional operations if Eritrea failed to stop being a “launching pad for attacks against Ethiopia.”

In a statement after Ethiopia announced its operations, the Eritrean government dismissed Ethiopian accusations that it supported the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front or ARDUF to attack the tourists. Avoiding a retaliatory response, it urged the UN to denounce the Ethiopian action which it claimed wasaimed at diverting attention from its border dispute with Ethiopia.

Suggestive of its continued relationship with Al-Shabab as underlined by the UN Sanctions Monitoring Group, the Eritrean government rejects AU military intervention in Somalia as amounting to “meddling” in the internal affairs of the troubled Hornof Africa country. The UN regards Eritrea’s attitude and support of Al Shababas a cynical plan that only encourages extremism and terrorism which has so farclaimed the lives of over 21,000 Somalis.

The UN thus concludes that “Eritrean involvement in Somalia reflects a broaderpattern of intelligence and special operations activity, including training, financial and logistical support to armed opposition groups in Djibouti,Ethiopia, the Sudan.” Added to this was the UN report of a foiled Eritrean attempt to blow up an AU summit in January 2011 in Addis Ababa.

The Security Council imposed a stricter second round of sanctions on Eritrea in December targeting its lucrative mining industry and its “Diaspora taxes”believed to be collected through methods of intimidation, blackmail andextortion from hundreds of thousands of Eritrean refugees and other expatriates. The UN says impoverished Eritrea is using these sources of revenueto destabilize the Horn Region. Eritrea has denied the UN charges.

UN-Eritrea relations are at their lowest point. They started deteriorating in 2008 when Eritrea expelled UN Peace Monitoring troops from areas on the Eritrean side ofthe border with Ethiopia, which Addis Ababa now says are being used as safe haven for ‘insurgents and terrorists” preparing to launch subversive missionsin Ethiopia. The UN presence on the border was meant to discourage the kind ofmilitary action Ethiopia took inside Eritrea over a week ago – an action which could lead to Eritrean reprisals, thus sending the two nations to yet another bloody war.

By kicking the UN peace forces out, Eritrea wanted to remind its citizens that the war was not over until the border was demarcated. In so doing it was alsoputting pressure on the UN to force Ethiopia to abide by a “final and binding”demarcation resolution adopted in 2002 by a Hague-based Border Commission. There solution puts the contentious village of Badme inside Eritrea.

Ethiopia has since decided to accept the Hague ruling unconditionally but says it wants negotiations with Eritrea on how to implement it. Eritrea wants physical demarcation first and then it will decide if it wants to talk. Thus the impasse continues.

HumanRights Abuses

The Eritrean government’s reported destabilizing role in the Horn Region isdefenseless. Equally reprehensible is its shocking of human rights violations which the international community needs to urgently tackle if the regime is tobe humanized. Experts describe Eritrea as “hell on earth.”

Thousands of young men and women keep fleeing the country knowing they may be abducted by human traffickers and end up in the Sinai Desert with the possibility of being raped, tortured, and killed for their internal organs to be sold to the highest bidder.

AUN report links the regime to “people trafficking” involving despairing Eritreans trying to get out of the country. At home, citizens face arbitraryarrests, torture and detention in life-threatening conditions for indefinite periods of time. For many rotting prisoners, the only way out has been to commit suicide if they can find the means to do so.

The government allows no freedoms of speech, press or of movement and travel. The system is totalitarian which means the people have no right to change their rulers through democratic means.

The government justifies the state of affairs because of its unsettled border issues with Ethiopia. But it has also given no hint that there will be democratization and respect for human rights once its border problems aresolved. Additionally, there are no indications that the government will introduce changes in its dangerous foreign policy.

As is often the practice in times of Eritrean national crisis, the government has accused Washington for being behind the Ethiopian action. The American Embassy in Asmara has put out a statement dying the charge.

The fact remains that the Security Council’s inaction in the wake of Ethiopian attacks inside Eritrea was a rebuke and a warning against the Red Sea state. What political impact these developments will have on the people and government of Eritrea is yet to be seen. It is clear however that the country will continue to face more humiliation and sanctions unless the government stops brutalizing its people and learns how to live in peace with its neighbors.

Isayas dies and goes to hell, when there he calls Eritrea long distance, after long ours of talking with fellow Sheabias he hangs up and asks the devil how much he owes, the devil told him that for him it is free, Isayas ask why? the devil tells him his call is local, Isayas asks “Local?” the devil replies “yes, from one hell to another.”

Be dedeb yemimera ager michereshaw yihew new. What is more sad is, many including the so called intellectuals gave their support to this lunatic, and they themselves ended up as a collection of garbages.
Betem eko yemiasafir neger new, can anyone define me what the love of your country mean? while you sacrify the entire nation for just a personal glory!? This man does nothing other than use the people for his name..and shit..

Whatever is the justification, his ill advised policies had successfully destroyed mine and my family’s destiny – talking from my personal experience. Multiply this by 76,000, then you will understand a real “dedeb” is at the helm of 4,500,000 people.

        Shinti Ghemel,
amiche-kenya was talking of your DIA…why do you defer it to Ethiopia whenever there is an issue of Eritrea…. He is right we have become “papagalos” if the leader said jump we jump, war we go to war….but when our young are dying and their vital parts are sold like spares ….He utters no word in the protection of his people. We do the same…..It is a shameful and disgraceful moment for Eritrea…even Shintigemel, your name…I hope your parents did not call you that too much because you are behaving in that manner.

mr. micheal, i met you in Hawasa, u respect all peoples. do u think this our rigts shuld be respected?
i don’t know what kind of group, whose servant they are but they said a lot of bad about the afars and kunamas for asking their rights.
for education, see this video in how slavish servants are made from free people. this will never happen to us,

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKyGxBCR_HE&feature=related

we afars have every right to determine our future as long as it protects the interest of our people. Afars have never been anyone’s slave under Amhara or Yemeni or Saudia. we have never been ashamed to speak our language. we are proud of who we are.
if Eritrea is not willing to protect our rights and language, we will have every right to determine our fate. Afars in Afar state of ethiopia govern themselves and speak their language in schools and government. we need the same rights.
An Afar is not anybody’s slave, and we will never be. If you are a slave of other foreign minds and culture, how can you free the Afar people, let alone eritria?
note, at 2.05 minutes royal children have their own slaves, watch the video, pay attention after 6 minutes how they do it,

    • Shinti Ghemel April 1, 2012

the issue is asseb. the afars want to take asseb. if we are going to follow weyane example then seraye, hamasien and part of akeleguzai will be under tigrai umbrella. we are hzbe tigrinya ,we speak almost the same language like tigrai…but is diferent tigrinya .we might as well be ethiopians. kilil politics will disintegrate eritrea. unless the government obliges us to know each other we will not have eritrea, but a group of tribes.

      • ahmed saleh April 1, 2012

        Shinti Ghemel
Are you out of your mind? What do you mean the afars want to
take Asseb ? Assab is located in DENKEL my friend and Afars are the
        habitants of the region.
Rahaita as an Eritrean from Denkelya proposed some of the requests
of Afar people’s demands. They have an obligation to fight for their
right to live free from HGDF’s contradictory system of governance .
Generally speaking the fact is more about equality, liberty and social justice. We suppose to look at eachother as one people to confront
the wrong doers. Undermining others brings only division and mistrust
so it is important to listen and consider to their complaints on finding
        common solutions.
For the time being our potential have to concentrate how to get rid
of our present system and hand over the power to Eritrean people.

ETHIOPIA: Late rains threaten food security……source irin news……aiga forum

We hear that Ethiopia is advancing ,nile dam, progress, potash , gold..food security…..Aiga forum, woyanes indirect spokes website, itself….brought the news. “In amhara region only 3% of the seeds have been planted…,well Woyane “the super power ” of the region is going to beg for food again…surprise, surprise…while Eritreans are belching every second due to excess food.Ethiopia did not give a cent to Japan´s tragedy, while Eritrea gave 50,000 dollars. This should be the right time to hit them while they are hungry…well, they are always hungry.

    • NoMoreIssayas2012 April 1, 2012

correct me if I’m wrong, but is your name mean Camel’s urine? If that is correct, you gave yourself right name. Because your comments are smells like urine. Bravo!

    • Hama-sinai April 1, 2012

Yes, ethiopians are the super powers of the region. The always the truth. if there is any food insecurity, their people should be informed immediately. This is not possible with shabeya (even thousands die, no body is allowed to tell).
There is some food insecurity in one region does not mean there is a big problem. Ethiopia has 87 million people. out of this, if 1 million has food insecurity, it is only 1.2% of the total population. The rest more than 97% has no any problem.but in eritrea if one million is starved it means more than 20% of the people is starved, and no body tells about it. because esayas’sgovernment do not want to expose it (saying we are ‘rich’)
Yes, ethiopia is building a hydro dam which costs more than 5 billion US dollar. 5 billion for eritrea, can serve 15 years country budget
As the above article indicated, currently, ‘Eritrea is hell on earth’. people like shiniti ghemel shall admit this fact and work for solution. otherwise, the old saying goes like this: ‘Quslu zehabe’e medhanit ayrikebelun’

    • jonas-1923@hotmail.com April 1, 2012

Are u telling us that Eritreans are fed Kentucky chickens everyday so you can point out the starvation in Ethiopia, both countries are famine ravaged and poorest of the poor in the world, one begs for food the other starves his ppl in the name of self reliance, u are really Shinty.

    • Baraee April 2, 2012

      Shint Gemel,
Only a sadist is happy of other’s failure….Why should you care or not care whether Ethiop’s late rains threaten their food security….Only a failed and dead brain would ululate …talk of your own….Every eritrean is now fed from abroad…the most flourishing has become to send shipments of food elements, even cooking oil is sent from aborad to feed those in the city.

    Eritrean Airlines Expands Route Network
    Published by admin on March 31, 2012 | News | 2 Comments
    Posted on 31 March 2012

Frankfurt, Germany – Eritrean Airlines re-opens non-stop flight operations from Frankfurt to Asmara, Eritrea this spring and summer traffic schedule.
Eritrean Airines will service Frankfurt from Asmara three times a week: once a day on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday starting from the 17th of April.
Flights operate under flight number ‘ERT 371′ with a new Airbus 319 from Terminal 2 in Frankfurt (Timetable).
This is good news for Eritreans as their national carrier returns serving one of the most demanded routes to Asmara, after having ceased direct operations between Asmara and Frankfurt in 2009. Healthy competition between Eritrean Airlines and Lufthansa can benefit consumers as air fares might become slightly cheaper.
The airline is further expanding its international network with routes to Johannesburg and Cape Town waiting to be announced.
Forsyth Black, Senior Vice President Africa of international ground handling firm Menzies Aviation announced in mid-March on the company’s website, that South Africa has won Eritrean Airlines 4 per week service from Asmara via Entebbe to both Johannesburg and Cape Town.
“Eritrean are new to the market in South Africa and hope to build up their service over the coming months. This is the first new market entrant of the year and it’s a Menzies customer!”
“The second new market entry of the year, and a…

Do not be fool by this bogus article. Eritrean Airlnes is a joke (if there is any). These so called new routs are designed for Issayas and his worshipers to collect the 2% from diasporaing who are sheltering in Germany and Soth Africa.

If the airlines is expanded ,it is good news for those who want to escape.

  • shinti ghemel April 1, 2012

those who use lufthansa airlines ,instead of Eritrean air bus are helping Woyane indirectly. We should all use our own ,whether we like our government or not.

    • jonas-1923@hotmail.com April 2, 2012

Shinity, u couldnt have choosen a better name for yourself…how do u help Woyane by flying Lufthansa, u are as delusional as dick-traitor Isayas.

  • Rahayta April 2, 2012

    shinti,
you have a good name. in Afar culture shinti Gamel is a good medicine but your politics is bad. you accuse us “the afars want to take asseb”? why I take my property and my land. Asseb is not in keren or Asmera, it is in Dankalia, Afar land.
There is attack on our political fights and on our demands, being a minority is not eazy in this zone, outsiders such as ottamans forced us to use Arabic, Italians, amharik, now too Arabic, tigrayna.
When are we to be Afar? When do I respect me? When do my children become real Afar?
I am no slave of any one. I am Afar first. A good Afar and a good kunama becomes a good person, then a good Eritrian.
Learn from the video how Arabs make others slaves to speak Arabic. I am no slave. I need my language. You hate your language, not my problem. I am Afar first. I am not Arab slave, Amhara slave or tigrayna slave. We want to use and respect our land and our language like the Afar people in Ethiopia, we are the same people, we need our rights.
We have a meeting in Samara and Shire, few times with the kunama people, we have the same problem.
Some people in Hawasa think we create problem. No, we are solving our problem, we need all our rights back. We need to govern ourselves, our language, our land.
I want my children to study Afar and English first second. No, I do n’t want them to waste time study Arabic, Turky, Amharic, Tigryna. all languages are equal.
watch the video again. we are not slaves.

    • SINGAPO-ERITREAN April 3, 2012

I agree with you ,some of us have fake/made up identity ,due to self hatred . An Afar is an Afar ,whether lives in Eritrea /Ethiopia/Djibouti. I am with you …why , because , I have the same problem like you ,those who want to destroy your history ,are doing the same to me. Being A tigraway from Hamasien does not make me Ethiopian ,unless I want to. I amn abissynian & Eritrean. Plus when you hit the nose ,the eyes are the ones that weep, because ,they are connected. I should not define you ,you define your self & vice versa .
I LOVE AFAR PEOPLE ,BECAUSE ,I LOVE MY TIGRAWAY IDENTITY.

  • Ahmed saleh April 2, 2012

    Rahaita
As an Afar from Denkelia I appreciate your effort to high light the issue of those people.
You participation in this forum for discussion gives vast knowledge to the spectrum of our
wide range political failures under HGDF policy. Lack of informations from different regions
mainly the disadvantaged group of our society held us back from recognizing the evil at it’s
early stage of destruction. Even though I respect your concern but the answer lies on the time
when we establish democratic system under the law of Eritrean constitution. It make a sense
when you said; a good afar become a good Eritrean. In deed pride starts from inside of you.
Finally let me tell you not disrupt yourself from dialogue because of the rope of arrogance,
lies and deceits. Keep positive and hopeful for good to come by fighting of course. Remember
those who takes no action for chances win nothing.
