Veteran freedom fighter and former Director General of Telecommunications; Mr. Solomon Habtom died today 18 August 2017, in the notorious Asmara prison, known as Carchelli.

Mr. Solomon, believed to be in his late sixties, was arrested on 10 July 2003 and has been imprisoned by the dictatorial regime for 14 years without being charged or facing trial in the court of law.

When the family of Mr. Solomon Habtom learned of his death, no sufficient explanation was given to them about the cause and the circumstances of his death.

Before joining the armed struggle for Eritrea’s independence, Mr. Solomon studied at the University of Addis Ababa.  Later on, he did his further studies in Sweden. While in Sweden, he met the veteran Eritrean patriot Woldeab Woldemariam and got involved with Eritrean revolutionary activities. Soon after, he joined the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), in the early 1970s. During the armed struggle, he served in the Signal and Communications Department, where he led by example.

As many Eritrean compatriots, Mr. Solomon, whose three siblings had fallen for Eritrean independence, has become a victim of the very revolution he helped to succeed.

Mr. Solomon Habtom is survived by his wife and two children.

      Mr Negusse Abraha,
Cruel and twisted society create a cruel and twisted rulersor ‘sirAt’.
Unfortunately, this is the sad case with Eritrea, stop just blaming Isaias one individual person.

      • Abrehet K. August 20, 2017

Please correct and read my comment as rulers or/and sirAt.

Iseyas has always been a divisive figure.
He has been diabolically smart in dividing people along regional and religious lines. He got a fertile ground to promote his ideas. Many followed him and killed their brothers and sisters. He is in this business for the last 47 years.
Blaming him now is not of much importance. Blaming ourselves would be the right thing to do. That would certainly lead to healing the wounds and save our nation from complete disaster, waiting to happen the day the fascist junta finally loses control.
The worst is coming, unless we stand together shoulder to shoulder and work for genuine unity and protect our people and our country, before it’s too late.

      • sami August 20, 2017

Aba thimmer and Kalighe as the same old serial liar and pretender/fake actor. We would have been far far worse under your barbaric Islamic and corrupted ELF mafia killers. Under your backward barbaric Sharia Islamic law our beautiful Eritrea would have been another Syria, Iraq, Libya and your taliban Afghanistan and Yemen. Your stone head terrorist muslims brothers have been savagely mistreating our young generation in their hell deserts and countries by raping and beheading. Higdefs are much better that your animal terrorist brothers and the Amharas (Haile selassie & Derg) were far more better than you all so-called rootless “deki hager”.

        • Aba thimmer August 21, 2017

ነብሲ,your point is totally wrong. We have never heard and see the current situation in the era of ELF, unless today. ከም’ዚ ከማኻ ኣጽቂጡ ዝድቅስ ረጊጽካዮ ምሕላፍ ከድሊ ኢዩ።

Akelgusay with our narow regionalist attitude helped iseyas divide us. Lets admit it. That will not get us anywhere unless we try to overcome our shortcmmings and focus on what we oppose and what we support or want to achieve. If we can not work with others, we can not live with others and we need to change our goal from bringing democracy to separating from eritrea.

        • Kalighe August 21, 2017

“Akelgusay with our narow regionalist attitude helped iseyas divide us. Lets admit it.”

Can you please stop this madness ????

          • Danilo August 21, 2017

Kalighe, don’t expect a mad dog to stop. Because of his tail, prefer the play called ” girotondo -giro “nothing else.

A child of an abusive parent asks the court to become independent (poor Eritrea). The child is granted his wish and he is an emancipated minor. 30 yrs later the child (Eritrean Ghedli) is as abusive as his parent even to his/its own children. There are conflicting reports on the parent: some say he is reformed “he became a member of pentecostal churches preaching about peace & love”, some say he is still the same old abusive crank, he just has redirected his abusive to new victims. In short, slowly but surely, the death of Eritreanism executed by its own predators.
The big and urgent question is ‘what makes Eritreans any different now’?

Danilo bella/Habibti/Habibi, “use one Name” Okay!
Please tell or remind this your serial liar muslim nefaHito aka Kalighe, Aba thimmer, amanuel, andom, Sol, (the mad Yemeni dog Abdurobo) to stick and use only one of his old rootless nomad Name.
On more serious note, three successive generations of our poor young Eritreans went through four unnecessary wars within a period of 40 50 yrs. One former Eritrean liberation fighter (bandit/shifta) put it rightly, “it took 30 yrs to liberate the land and it will take another 30 yrs to liberate the poor people”.
There is this difficult to comprehend and ever-recurrent tendency about Eritreans: the tendency to harden their hold on anything they come in contact with – immaterial whether it is of any benefit to their well-being or survival. This inflexibility is manifested in all sorts of socio-cultural, religious, linguistic or political spaces or activism. This rigidity, whether it is a side-effect of a colonial past or a desperate attempt to recover demands some proper examination. However, one thing is for certain, whatever that space may be, there is a correlation with that displacing and blinding effect which pulls ‘all good intentions’ to an undesirable outcome and bigin the cycle of defending the indefensible to the end and, come what may, ‘travel’ the world against their own (national or not) self-interest and resource-base.
