Eritrea: Three Ministers “offer their resignation” as thousands of young professionals leave the country

Asmara 02/10/2018) members of the Freedom Friday network (Arbi Harnet) in Asmara report that the situation in Eritrea is deteriorating and people are bracing themselves for every eventuality.

These activists say they are hearing rumours of a growing discontent among cabinet members as well as senior party and army officials.

The Cabinet Meeting that was convened last week, only lasted a few hours. Usually it is held over a couple of days. It is reported that President Issaias Afwerki’s briefings regarding the current national and regional developments were met with ‘tough questions’ from several ministers. This created a tense atmosphere and he is said to have walked out of the meeting. The Arbi Harnet activists have heard that at least three ministers have asked permission to resign from their respective posts.

The three ministers who have requested to be relieved of their ministerial responsibilities are believed to be Mr Arefaine Berhe, minister of agriculture, Mr Semere Russom, Minister of education (who was  appointed ambassador to Ethiopia in July) and the Minister of public works, Mr Abraha Asfaha. It should not be forgotten that last month the regime arrested the former minister of finance, following his publication of a two-volume book criticising the regime.

Meanwhile, Eritreans continue to leave the country, taking advantage of the opening of the border with Ethiopia. The health and education sectors are said to be suffering badly, since large numbers of professionals, including young teachers and medical professionals, have left the country in large numbers.

The arrest of ordinary citizens has also continued. As per earlier reports many members of evangelical faith groups who came to Asmara airport to welcome an Ethiopia Televangelist, who took the first flight from Ethiopia, are still in prison.

Similarly, owners of water tankers, who were unable to pay the hefty fines levied during the summer, amounting to millions of Nakfa, remain in jail.

what does it mean they have asked permission to resign? They should force him to explain not ask permission! Ur information should be reliable instead of rumors !

    • Gezae October 4, 2018

Believe me or not this is a shaggy-dog story; rambling story or joke. Typically this is amusing report because it is absurdly inconsequential,
Any how first of all what/who are/is Freedom Friday network or Arbi Harnet.. No body has ever heard that there is/was freedom on Friday. Do they really have human mind these guys even Jesus Christ the spiritual Son of the Mighty God did not freed on Friday, contrary he was crucified and died on Friday. Shame to Freedom Friday network

Arbi Harnet are bunch of mercenaries
        from Friday’s Islam mosque prayers/gatherers.
They make nuisance calls to Eritreans in Asmara
telling them that they will be coming soon to save/free them., jokers/comedians!

This shows that they do not have chain command or we can say they are against the not availability of transparency. Isayas Afwerki is Dictator they are saying.
    They don’t have military accessibility.

  • fetsum October 3, 2018

I don’t think he can have it easily this time. this may be the beginning of something special but if all of them follow the same step. The dictator is naked now, nothing left for cheating or for more patience from the people. I just hope it will be over soon before more damage is done. As usuals he may try to control the situation by jailing them but I think the sitation will explode on him at last because i don’t think most eritreans in the ruling party except his closest ones can tolerate this blunder. That is how the downfall of dictators start and may God help the people this time! I agree with Mekionen in a way but the situation may be a little premature for that, at least until more people join the resistance to build the confidence to let him know what he has to do by unified voice.

Stop day dreaming dude! You may be naked all through your sad life but not wedi Afom.

    “Three Ministers “offer their resignation””
First of all they were / are not ministers…the news must be corrected as ‘so called ministers.
Second ..Does it make any difference?= No nothing .They have been serving as slaves for 50 years .Yes,50 years long slavery…Now they are old and valueless ,ISSU or his Abraham needs new and dinamic slaves…..Where were they when their friends and school mates ‘the Menkai’ and ‘the Yemin’were murdered for refusing being slaves .

    • Danilo October 3, 2018

Now with out delay the army should move. The ministers are only ready for sacrifice. However, people’s determination is needed more than ever. Sentiments should be over but act of self defense is a must if we want to exist. But of course, we can!

    • bahlibi hiruy October 4, 2018

      Dearest Teclay
I don’t think it makes a difference , like you indicated. I don’t think the president is going to permit them to resign, or he might quietely replace them. They did not object when people had rough as hell, now that people have seen a glimpse of hope of trading with Ethiopians , people will not even care if the ministers drawn themselves in their bath tubs. what do you think ?

  • Gezae October 3, 2018

Who are these THREE MINISTERS? Come on mention them?

    • Danilo October 3, 2018

  • HdriswuE halalmariet October 3, 2018

I hope this is true ,and if true, is the tip of the iceberg, that the ministers tending their resignations have the military , security and the public at large on their side.

But if they are taking the action individually, I hope every one of them have a Manifesto ready to be splashed on social media, appologizing to Eritreans for the long duration they served him as veils to conduct his Crime Against Humanity with impunity in the massacre of close to 1000,000 Eritreans using multifaceted tools, such as, illegal war, maintaining No War No Peace
situation, economic destruction, social disintegration, physical and psychological torture in Concentration camps (aka national Service), human trafficking etc.

If however they are organized from ground up, I hope they have not committed the mistakes earlier dissenters made by involving people like Sebhat Efrem in their plot.

Sebhat Efrem has been isaias afewerk’s righthand man in foiling any plot against him, MenkaE, Wedi Ali are but a few movements that Sebhat Efrem torpedoed from within.

  • zeregabir Teaghes October 3, 2018

Already the military and security apparatus is weaved and tailored by Isayas Afwerki.
The irrational power is with Isayas Afwerki.
    Adinefas ….. Mazagaja Bet
    Aditekelezan and Himbitrti..
    Police
    Adikeyih and AdimengotI ….councils/Ambassadors
    and so on
The above was how Isayas Afwerki evicted the and dissmissed military security apparatus

  • Tes October 3, 2018

It is difficult to call them ministers. They don’t had authority or aministarial job or institutions. They are simply sit once awhile to get lectured by the despot. You don’t ask permission to resign. In normal circumstance one simply inform his/her resignation. But in current Eritrea nothing is normal.
Those so called minsters are there when the country bleeding and draing ofits youths. There were there when the entire world was shoked by the tragedy of lampaduza and mourning. How can now all of sudden unhappy with their master. Too late too little.

  • Gedamu October 3, 2018

Wedi Afom anbessa, as usual staying one step ahead of puppets, he is simply shaping Eritrean politics for the
next 20 – 30 yrs and how to control it and how to transfer power to his son Abraham Isaias Afeworki Abrahan smoothly.

  • Simon G. October 3, 2018

What was their reason for asking to resign?
Did they just woke up from hibernation?
It seems to me, this will make easier for DIA to layoff (or should I say fire) others. 3 down, how many of these riffraffs left?
