On May 13, 2018, some Eritreans, who live in metro Atlanta, had the opportunity to meet with the Ethiopian Ambassador to USA: H.E Ambassador Kassa Tekelmariam Gebrehiwot for about 45 minutes.
In this first of its kind meeting in the USA we had an opportunity to exchange some constructive and meaningful conversation with the Ambassador. We appreciated the fact a channel of communication was opened so we can directly address our appreciation, concerns, questions and suggestions directly to the Ambassador.
We sent our congratulatory message to the new Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed and the people of Ethiopia for their peaceful transition of power.
The atmosphere and spirit of the meeting was very congenial and mutually respectful. We feel the meeting was highly productive and very successful. We hope to continue this conversation moving forward.
We raised the following issues:
1. We appreciated the help that is given by the government and people of Ethiopia but we also requested if there was more that can be done to help the refugees live a productive life.
2. We expressed our hope for a better and productive relationship between the Ethiopian government and Eritrean opposition and civic organizations
3. We suggested for building an open communication channel between the Ethiopian government and Eritreans Diaspora community and when possible hold an open meeting like this for a direct and honest conversation.
The issues we raised were taken seriously, by H.E, and his response was very supportive. We deeply appreciate the fact that Ambassador Kassa was able to carve out time to meet with us from his extremely busy schedule.
