The London Building Democracy in Eritrea Conference and the Unwarranted Criticism it stirred

A British Baroness, a certain Kinnock, appears to have found new zeal to sponsor notorious Eritrean quislings for nefarious ends. One would have thought she could devote her time to pressing domestic problems (relevance of the Institution in which she is life-peer, Bre-exit etc).

Eritrea Focus’s ‘Building Democracy in Eritrea’ conference has stirred unwarranted criticism The above two tweets are from Yamane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information and Estifanos Afeworki, Eritrea’s Ambassador to Japan, respectively. Not surprisingly, the two government representatives have tried to twist the facts and convince people that the conference was sponsored by Baroness Kinnock and the TPLF.

What has startled me is that Awate.com and Saleh Gadi seem to have joined the foray to discredit Eritrea Focus. Saleh Gadi labelled the London Conference as an undertaking of some Europeans, especially Mirjam Van Reisen and Martin Plaut. He has issued a ‘hands off’ warning against the latter. Mirjam was not involved at all, she was not even at the conference. It is true she is a giant of a woman who has done a lot to expose the gross human right violations in Eritrea and we only wish she were at the conference.  She or her organisation, Europe External Policy Advisor (EEPA) have not only co-sponsored conferences in support of Eritrean refugees but also in cooperation with other organisations has held the EU accountable for funding Libya to keep Eritrean and other African refugees in detention camps in order to prevent them from sailing to Europe.

Knowingly or otherwise, Saleh Gadi, has fallen in a criminal conspiracy with the PFDJ in his attempts to discredit Eritrea Focus, albeit for a different reason. The fact that the three of them pointed their fingers at three different directions is further evidence of their failed tactics of disinformation.  Of course, the contribution of Martin Plaut in exposing the gross human rights violations in Eritrea is substantial as to merit him an attack by YPFDJ thugs outside the British Library in London. Martin has a big heart for the people of Eritrea that started over three decades during his visit to the liberated areas in Sahel. We are very proud of his contribution and partnership.

The articles at Awate.com and Saleh Gadi’s videos have attempted to present EF as an unknown quantity and its directors as rookies, with little knowledge and understanding of Eritrean politics. Eritrea Focus might be relatively new as an organization, but has achieved a quality work more than most Eritrean organizations have done in their decades of existence.

It has done a lot of work prior to this conference. It works with a clear objective, has built a viable institution that is why many organisations have found it reliable to work with.

To my knowledge, it is the only organization that has managed to create a parliamentary committee on Eritrea in any democratic country – the All Party Parliamentary Group on Eritrea (APPG). Baroness Kinnock of Holyhead was instrumental in the creation of the APPG, and no wonder she was the main target in Yamane Gebremeskel’s twit. Eritrea Focus regularly engages with these parliamentarians on human rights abuses in Eritrea. It has organised parliamentary hearings on Eritrean refugees, religious persecution in Eritrea, EU’s migration policy, to mention a few. The London conference was unique because it was opened by the chair of APPG who promised full support to our struggle for democracy and justice.

A few years back, a group composed of a lobbyist lawyer, a Nevsun PR and Professor Asmarom Legesse were due to address the House of Lords but Baroness Kinnock protested that the group was advocating for a repressive regime and it would be a scandal to allow them to speak in the Parliament. The meeting got cancelled. Humiliated, they booked another venue. It too was cancelled.

In 2019, EF organised a Photo Exhibition and published an exhaustive report on the mining industry titled “MINING & REPRESSION IN ERITREA, CORPORATE COMPLICITY IN HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES.

In addition, EF has participated in many protests. The protest outside the Rwandan Embassy, protesting complicity of the country in accepting refugees deported from Israel is one example. The demonstrations that took place world-wide resulted in Israel abandoning the project. In this protests, Holocaust Survivors played a decisive role.

In 2017, EF participated in a demonstration in front of the House of Parliament against Europe’s refusal to rescue refugees that were in danger while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.  In that protest, several human rights and humanitarian organisations displayed lifesaving jackets that symbolized those who drowned in the sea because help was denied to them. It was an appeal to parliamentarians and the public to save people from drowning. I participated representing EF: The slogan was “Refugees Welcome”.  (See photo).

Furthered more EF has collaborated with some organisations, such as London Mining Network, a watch dog that monitors the damages to the environment and the health of local people caused by mining corporations.

Furthermore in the video in Tigrinya Saleh mentioned that for many years Eritreans were holding conferences but they didn’t achieve anything. He branded the organizers   as agents of foreign interests (ደላሎ ፖለቲካ). A blunder of historic proportion. He just gave credit to Elsa Chyrum and to a certain extent to Meron Estifanos.

Refugees Welcome

It is not true that conferences achieve nothing.  I could mention many, but it suffices to give one example.  In 2003- 20005 in United Kingdom, more and more Eritrean asylum applications were rejected. The worst part is that they were asked to vacate the accommodation provided by the Home Office within 28 days. They became homeless. There were cases of mental health problem among them.  At that time, a few of us activists that were trying to help Eritrean refugees organised a big conference with the help of the Royal African Society based at the University of London and MRCF (Migrant and Refugees Community Forum). It was well attended by students and lecturers from the University of London and many refugee organisations, such as British Refugee council.  It attracted UNHCR and the lawyers association in UK. The   Chairman was Malcom Harper from a United Nations staff in UK.  After a while, the Home Office started allowing fresh applications from all that were rejected – they were re-housed and given weekly allowance for maintenance.  Over time almost all those rejected were accepted as refugees. This is the outcome of persistent lobbying and advocacy.

Conferences and advocacy can bring fundamental change in the life of refugees.  I can only guess the motive of Saleh Gadi’s efforts in trying to undermine such important high profile international conference on democracy. All I can say is that it has become a widespread disease that has plagued the work of many justice seekers and caused fragmentation and helplessness. The attack against the outspoken activist Sengal Woldetensaie is the most recent.  Many Governments in Europe always ask, “Why don’t you work together?” They are dismayed when approached by many Eritrean justice seekers telling them the same story they know- repression in Eritrea.

To avoid that, all those groups’ or individuals who stand up and fight against human rights violation must follow a basic code of conduct. It is true that people should be free to criticise mistakes but we also need to be careful that the criticism is not destructive.

The International Community has the responsibility to condemn repression that takes place in any country and to help Eritrean refugees in distress and give them sanctuary. The tendency to devalue their support must not be condoned.

Today, the Eritrean youth have risen up.   It is the educated and professionals that should render support in drawing the road map. As a man of learning who owns website, Gadi should have given part of his time to contribute to such activities. There is a lesson to learn from the experience of the Sudan. Watch the analysis of Amal Ali, Idris Hummed and Redie Aybu on ATV-Assenna   confirming that Eritreans has a lot to learn from the Sudan’s popular apprising.

During the conference particularly dinner time, discussing with the people who shares the value of justice, and exchange experiences is uplifting. Yes working for refugees and be part of justice seekers has never been easy but is fulfilling.  It is food for your conscience. People engage among each other with love and comradery.  I was happy to engage with such kind of people during the conference. I was over the moon. Standing in solidarity with various diaspora justice seekers can make a profound difference to the struggle.

La Luta continua. Victory to the masses.

    Yaakil!!!
You are owned by the puppeteer. Period! Don’t try to cover it up. It wasn’t inclusive and you should be ashamed. We don’t want Eritrea to be like Venezuela’s unelected president Guaidó leadership. Once you involve non-Eritrea in our politics, you are nothing but puppets.

    • Fikre Tekle May 20, 2019

      Amine,
What specifically is your concern here? Are you opposing the idea that a non-Eritrean should be interested in helping Eritreans fight for Democracy? Or you are opposing the initiative because it was as you claim exclusive? First off, you seem intent on calling the initiators names which hardly makes for a constructive anything. If you are at all interested in bringing about positive and fundamental change in Eritrea, you better know every Eritrean has every right in taking part. That also means, they can utilize the resources at their disposal including experts, opinion makers, policy makers and so on, if/when possible. As long as the parties involved are there to support the cause and not impose their own agendas, I don’t see any inconsistency there. And for that, the initiators should be applauded and not condemned. That’s why you calling them puppets does not add up unless you were a pfdj stooge. The second point you raise in regard to inclusion or rather exclusion, I doubt that it is your real concern. You seem to have been fishing for something to cause discord amongst Eritreans and you probably thought that you could use the inclusion bit to cause confusion and expand hatred. That’s one of pfdj’s oldest tricks. 03 you better pack up and move on. This is Assenna after all. Wrong address, my friend! Ciao

Brother Petros, you can do a lot better challenging the few issues directed against Eritrea Focus one at a time as its REPORTER. I am talking about transparency, inclusiveness, criteria for selecting the conference attendants, etc, etc, and without any emotional discharge instead of glamorizing and defending individuals that few other have a serious problem with on the question of democracy. Get to the points and respond without classifying individuals according to how you feel about them. Be careful Sir, when you defend your group and do not misrepresent its value by advertising personalities just because you like them. There is no doubt the group has qualified intellectuals to initiate the transition of Eritrea to democracy but I don’t believe it includes the most determined minds of the resistance in terms of dedication and knowledge in my opinion. Please answer the few questions forwarded to the group from the AWATE society without any biased feeling, comparativeness and personification. This is not a personality contest for you to advertise personalities the way you feel but a forum whose future depends on how neutrally one approaches the Eritrean situation in general and the process of democratizing the nation in particular. Ideas should be respected more than personalities and good luck!

Please ignore the last two lines of my comment.

  • meda May 20, 2019

It stirred criticism because it made an impact. It showed Eritrean Justice-seekers have become a force to be reckoned with. Ayte isayas cannot stand it, just as some in the opposition who refused to see it as something is was -a conference rather than a congress.

Anyone can criticize a person based on experience but I do believe the “attacked” personalities (for what ever reason) should themselves respond if they can defend themselves on the merit. Defining an activist as “outspoken” may be acceptable so long as kept in private but to share the opinion in public as if it were absolute is not good without researching the personality inside out from all angles of the resistance.. I, for instance completely disagree with your classification of the person in question based on my direct experience and that of others’. I can defend this opinion materially in view of democracy if necessary although unnecessary at this point in the struggle. This type of communication from a reporter of a high caliber group can terribly back fire against the group and should be avoided in the future. Please keep your personal feelings of individuals to yourself and concentrate on the points of AWATE affiliated criticism if you may without considering it an “attack” against your group. We should never use criticism for division or political characterization but rather for an opportunity to explain further and effectively communicate with the people. Use it to attract people to your direction instead of aggravating the difference in between. We, after all should never develop cults anymore and specially of individuals in serious problem with other activists as a matter of paternal behaviors for we have paid the price dearly in relation to DIA. I suggest ERITREA FOCUS should have a dedicated group of individuals in the REPORTAGE department to avoid such a mistake and in order to professionally, efficiently and collectively represent itself in front of the public. It will otherwise dearly suffer the consequence of diffusing personal opinions as such as if it were the group’s opinion. With maximum respect!!

    • Petros Tesfagherghis May 21, 2019

      Dear Fitzum :
: You said this type of communication from a reporter of a high calibre group can terribly back fire against the group and should be avoided in the future. “
I would like to clarify that the article is mine. It is personal and EF has no hand in it. I do write articles every now and then and there are always comments some favorable and some critics and even insults.
However your concern is well taken. It had a flaw in the way I presented the case of Sengal Woldesellasie –I meant to deal with the concept of attacks among justice seekers. But you are right it looked as if I wrote in his defense, involving in the affairs I know nothing about. An affair that is taking place in USA. Some months ago Sengal has addressed Eritreans justice seekers in London he was very good at presenting the case and it is in reference to that I said, the outspoken Sengal- for me he is a good presenter. My apologies for offending you. But I still worry about ~Eritrean intellectuals. In this critical period it is the intellectuals that will come out with a plan of action and they can make a lot of difference.

    • Asmara Eritrea May 21, 2019

Awate.com has passed its sell-by date. A website that has operated for well over 20 years [their words] with no or very little positive impact on Eritrean society and constantly involved in a “friendly fire” rather than “firing” at the enemy. No wonder Awate.com has stagnated whilst other mediums such as Assenna have flourished from a website to a radio and now the first Eritrean stellate TV. And all that in about 10 years – half the time Awate.com has been in existence.

An “opposition website” that is hellbent on finding faults of opposition and human rights groups rather than trying to constructively engage with them is not fit for purpose. Awate.com should be ignored as an irrelevant piece of s…….!.

This will be the first and last time I write about Awate.com because my time is precious.

      Eritrea forever, death to dictatorship.

      • Amine May 22, 2019

But you run to awate to check if a breaking news is indeed has truth?
        Lol

  • Fetsum Abraham May 20, 2019

Please read the PATERNAL as PATTERNAL and I apologize for the typo error!!

    • memhir May 20, 2019

      Fetsum,

You seem to have some kind of axe to grind my friend! Same with Mr. Saleh at Awate.. Drop it.

      • memhir May 22, 2019

        Hi Fetsum,

What you asked is a fair question, and, frankly, I am not concerned about your criticism of Petros attacking personalities. My main concern is your dicing and slicing the London Conference just as Gadi did in his video presentation and comments. That is one of the main jobs of the Eritrean dictator, not yours or Saleh’s. Yes I do visit Awate and I know what Saleh said about the Nairobi meeting some time ago. In short, your concern is the selection of participants. Please, please do not kill any Eritrean flower which is trying to sprout before it blooms. Support or do nothing. A devil is driving Eritrea into the ground. For me, all muslim or Christian conferences are fine as long as they get along and Eritrea is first.

        Peace.

It never is a criticism of you and Saleh at Awate both of whom are dedicated Eritreans.

  • Fetsum Abraham May 20, 2019

what makes you say that Memhir? what relationship did my comment have with Awate? what should I drop specifically? please explain it clearly my brother. I want this group to be fit and strong by effectively addressing the criticisms from any Eritrean group without personalizing anything. If the group feels the importance of Awate’s opinion enough to post an article on, I expect it to address all issues efficiently. Petros did well defending the group’s position on the Malcom Harper differential, in fact with concrete facts in the experience but there are more questions forwarded by Awate et al if you may visit that website and read for yourself as an independent observer He should address them all as a reporter to be effective in closing the difference on the ground, yet without negative emotions and labeling the “attackers”. That is all I am saying here besides advising my brother to not advertise personalities here based on personal feelings for there are other opinions about the advertised from other activists in the struggle that I am certain about. I am part of that classification by direct experience and this approach can hurt the group in certain ways. Just a piece of advice in constructive engagement to help the group out in my capacity as a potential supporter, brother! Peace .

  • Fetsum Abraham May 21, 2019

The Author said “Awate.com and Saleh Gadi labelled the London Conference as an undertaking of some Europeans, especially Mirjam Van Reisen and Martin Plaut. He has issued a ‘hands off’ warning against the latter.”
I found this accusation ridiculous although Awate et al may have points to talk about transparency and other issues associated with the group. I have my own differences a well but It is too young to push it around in my opinion for heavens sake, without something driven by fear of a legitimate alternative to Bayto which we Eritreans have been desperately looking for many years. No one exclusively owns the struggle anyway!! Aside the Author’s exaggerated claims of success without material evidence and hallucination of being the best representation of the people (we have not seen anything beyond the conference yet), no one should question the intellectual and professional quality of the group vis-à-vis its collective capacity to conceptualize the badly needed ERITREAN TRANSITIONAL GOVERNMENT of ERITREA on paper. These are creams of the society and they can do it with any other group in the struggle including Bayto and any external help from any part of the academic world. We should, therefore welcome it as one of the best opportunities of our struggle to democracy. The fact remains that it an ERITREAN effort to change the situation in the country!!!

  • Fetsum Abraham May 21, 2019

Brorher Petros, thank you very much for your very decent and humble response. I respect your personal opinion and thank you for the clarification. Thank you for being part of this wonderful mission and I am very excited as a supporting person from the periphery. We want you to be effective and I believe in helping out through constructive criticisms in order to make the group stronger and successful. Don’t worry about how others try to antagonize you for any reason. Relax and deal with it brother because we know you are in the right truck and we will support you. Glad to see our intellectuals ready to do something and I glorify you for being part of it as you always have been in the past. I AM SORRY if I were harsh to you but you know it is all love and respect for I know the value of your contribution very well. I wish you give us a little more information about the group and said achievements but only if possible. Otherwise, please keep coming and inform us periodically and I have confidence that the group will make it with other Eritrean groups at the end of the day.
